Obviously, people can interpret art however they like. I do think there are two intentions in the meaning of this song. Chan and Hyunjin’s meaning and the director’s meaning, which are connected. There was a show where they show the process of making this song (Howl in Harmony). In it, Chan and Hyunjin wanted to convey their obsession with work, while obviously giving it a sexy vibe. I think the sex/relationship in the song is meant to convey their obsession with their work and the toxic ‘I need you but I’m so obsessed that it’s toxic’ notion. In the mv(which was directed by a queer person), Chan and Hyunjin are wearing similar clothes as they’re meant to be the two sides of the same mind, one being chained up and choked by the other at different points, showing the struggle they experience with this obsession. Chan and Hyunjin wanted to go for a sexy vibe anyway, so the director took their ideas and created the homoerotic piece of art we just witnessed. So while I don’t necessarily think the LGBTQ nature of the video was the main focus, is it definitely there and being used as a metaphor for the obsession they feel. I don’t think I’m the best person to explain this, so if anyone wants to elaborate, please do🫰 Anyways, I enjoyed your video, i’m binging your skz journey atm😂

Thank you all for leaving such wonderful and insightful comments! I think I might do a follow up video again discussing Red Lights but this time looking at it from the lyrical perspective. It was important to me that I talk about the LGBTQ+ perspective and pretty much focus on it in a single video but there is even more to dive into. I hope you don’t mind! Again thank you so much for your comments!

Bang Chan said the sound of this song was "sexy sexy" and Hyunjin agreed and replied "hard sexy". Then they both realized what was said and were immediately embarrassed. It was adorable and so funny.

Yes, as others said Bang Chan says the song is about obsession and being a workaholic but it was intentionally sexy sounding in nature and it was a choice to make the music video to support that. Hyunjin came up with the song and Bang Chan helped him.
Chan jokes that Hyunjin wrote it himself but not only did Chan have to help with translations he also had to tone it down because it's said that Hyunjin's lyrics were initially more risque to begin with.
They don't have a dance practice that I know of but they do have a behind the scenes making of video.
Red Lights has since been rearranged and recorded so they can perform it as a group during concerts with all 8 members singing parts. There are videos posted of them performing this live with their backup dancers and it is wonderful.
Taste is a fan favorite SKZ song by the Danceracha unit. It was written by Hyunjin and then he took it to Lee Know and Felix to get their imput. It doesn't have a music video but they have performed it in concert and there are color coded lyric videos.

This song is sexy. Chan likes to tell Stay that he wants them to interpret his music in their own way. That is why most Stray Kids songs are gender neutral and he rarely discusses exactly what was in his head when creating a song. He did comment that the inspiration for this was about obsession and compulsion. He is a workaholic and many times he works throughout the night. Hyunjin also tends to be the same when he is trying to master something. I believe this was the initial thoughts when creating this as they cant stop working no matter how much they should take a break or sleep. They are always drawn to it. Hyunjin said that he wanted to make it sexy so Red Lights was born. As always, I enjoyed your thoughts and takeaway from this mv and look forward to your next Stray Kids reaction ❤

Chan talked about this song being about his insomnia and the red lights is the lights of the studio. That's why one verse says set the mic up.

I appreciate your thoughts on this. Red Lights was actually the song that made me a Stay. I heard it and it just had such a gripping quality, I'd never really checked out kpop before but this song got me hooked, and then like you when I watched the music video I was impressed. The song is about compulsion and obsession, which ultimately originates from their relationship with their work, but they did deliberately want it to be open to interpretation that they could be singing about a person. The director of this music video Novvkim is openly gay himself, and the fact this video does give off the same-sex tension is something they definitely had to be aware of, even in the behind the scenes stuff they're obviously self aware from the way they joke and talk. So whilst the song itself might not be focussed on a romance, the video allows for an element of queer sexual tension in how they portray the relationship with themselves and their art, different parts of themselves and each other. That is pretty big. Because like you said, we're still in a world where even the implication can be seen as too much of a business risk, so I appreciate that element of the video a lot as well. I also nerd out because I was a film student and this video is so well put together and multi-layered it's definitely more than a shock factor sexy style video, it's one you can come back to and tease new meanings out each time.
I also really enjoy that Hyunjin and Chan played a big role in designing the music video (which you can see in their Howl in Harmony series) and Chan said Hyunjin played a big role in coming up with the staging for the 8-member version they perform live on tour. This was their first real step into the sexier side of sound and performance which they've begun to explore a little more in some other unit songs like 'Taste' (no mv unfortunately).

you can watch how chan and hyunjin composed this song (skz song camp ep3 and a small part of ep4). they came up with everything themselves including this music video. thanks for your reaction ~

This was a pleasant surprise! Thank you for not just seeing the M/V in a narrow and straight forward way. I love how you brought up the different perspectives and the lgbtqia+ representation in the media. If you noticed the choreography was mirrored and the items on the table were purposely placed mirrored to each other. Looking forward to more SKZ reactions!

the song is about the obsessive, toxic (behavior/ relationship) about anything really up to the listener

lots of other ppl explained the meaning of this song so i don’t need to do that but im so glad you pointed out the lgbtq elements in this music video. the director of this music video, novvkim, is actually openly gay and has a boyfriend! although chan and hyunjin had a hand in directing this, you can tell the direction novvkim was going with this music video and how input from a straight person rather than a gay person, could’ve changed the whole vibe of the music video. proof of that was that it was novvkims idea to have them grabbing eachothers necks. thank you so much for your reaction

  • @angiegraham5535
    @angiegraham5535 ปีที่แล้ว +3

They are actually mirroring each other. The dining room scene, if you cut the scene down the center, each side has the same items on the table, just in different places. Their movements are mirroring each other as well. The video leaves it up to the viewer to decide if they are talking to each other or talking to someone else in their own worlds. They even mirror each other at the end up until Hyunjin grabs Bang Chan's neck. The use of mirrors throughout the video emphasizes the mirroring actions. The scenes where there is someone standing over them while chained to the bed is actually a demon version of themselves. If you pause the video, you can see it is Hyunjin standing above himself chained to the bed and his eyes are glowing. Such an interesting video and there are so many interpretations!!

I’m mostly a BTS girl, but this one and Drive (Bang Chan and Lee Know, former BTS backup dancer) are 🔥. I love the Aussies in the group, Bang Chan and Felix.

Oh boy, red lights is spicy! 🥵
It was 1 of 3 unit tracks released for their NoEasy album and all were fantastic opportunities for the members to write, design, & produce the song and MV. Highly recommend you checking out episode 4 of Howling in Harmony (found on the Stray Kids YT channel) because you can hear directly from the members exactly what they wanted to express as this song is about obsession & compulsion. Also, it’s cute seeing the members hear the track for the first time and getting shy 🙈 at the “grown up concept”.
It may also inspire you to check out the other unit tracks: Surfin’ and Gone Away.
Thanks for your reaction and deeply appreciate how you engage with the SKZ content. You are absolutely right in that SKZ is very inclusive and mindful of using gender neutral language in their music so that all STAY can relate. We love to see it! 🥹🫶🏽❤️

I was told the meaning of this song before watching. Wow, now I see the reason for the comments. There’s the song and then there is the video, hmm. They are really hot. They perform this in concert as a whole. “Taste” performance is also seductive. (Felix, Hyunjin and Leeknow)

It is an interesting video. There is so much to unpack. The meaning can be multiple things. And the choreography is a thing in and of it's self to unpack. For most of the choreo, you will see the two of them mirroring each other. There are subtle differences though. When they are together on screen, Chan's choreo is slightly less aggressive, and Hyunjin's is more controlling. Chan appears controlling in the beginning, but as you go through he is less in charge. In the scene where they are holding each other by the neck? Chan has his hand on Hyunjin's wrist as he is being held, seeming to be trying to pull the hand away. Hyunjin on the other hand, holds Chan's hand to his throat HARD. He isn't trying to escape that grip.
In the table scene, Hyunjin is the first to lean forwards (and Chan mirrors it, complete with all the head tilts). Chan, in his part, leans back prompting Hyunjin to do so too. The table it's self is mirrored imperfectly. They have the same stuff, in roughly the same places, but things are arranged just slightly different. Certain things are more prominent on one side, than the other.
Their outfits are also an interesting contrast to each other. While similar enough to have cohesion, they have some telling differences. The white outfits are very similar. But Hyunjin has more covered up than Chan. The back of his shoulders are fully covered up, while Chan has his exposed. The black outfits, while both tops are see-through, are separate as well. Hyunjin has a full length top that is tucked in, and at no point do the belts let his shirt loose. While Chan has a crop top that flows with his movements. Also that belly chain....Not forgetting that.

Yesss I loved your reaction! And skz music always have room for any interpretation, that's one of their best things imo. But I definitely believe they KNEW exactly what they did with this MV especially because the film director is also an openly gay man and like you said too, I have so much respect for them to do that...
Hyunjin and Chan also talked about the lyrics that for them they are about obsessive working behaviour but on the other hand also hinted that they have a romantic meaning for them too... so I truly believe every kind of interpretation is right here, there's not a wrong one and that's how they intended it to be 🥰

It's really interesting to hear other people's opinions on songs🙂)(ik this is a long comment but I also want to talk abt the whole lgbtq+ and stray kids they are really open to that stuff and supportive of it they have gone to parade's and chan has mentioned stuff abt it in his live while talking stay. So yeah just wanted to mention that🙂) sry for the long comment

This song is about obsessive compulsion toxic behavior, you can take it as a relationship, or about yourself even about material things. More people lean to the relationship because the scenes are seductive nature. I love the tackled this topic and the video is the way it is because it gained so much attention because they did. It was their first seductive unit song. LOL Until Lee Know and Bang Chan released the m/v Drive. And its not really seductive visually but the words are very sensual in the lyrics. But of a course Bang Chan swears Lee Know wrote it and it is about driving. right that. If you believe that I got some ocean front property in Arizona. hahaha. I am looking forward to your next stray kids song. Thank you!

'Red Lights' is about overcoming/fighting your demons and the compulsion to be perfect in all aspects. When you are almost obsessed with perfectionism in an unhealthy way. Cause both of them are workaholics, and Chan also hav insomnia. And i can feel this song so much.... cause modt of the time im a workaholic too fighting against my insomnia.. so when this song dropped, i felled it in my soul.
But to be honest, this mv is a problem for all Stays who are Chan and Hyunjin stans.... like me. I'm an OT8 stan but Chan is my absolute Ult
