    Stray Kids are known to create music to be interpreted in the audience’s perspective, where we’re able to relate the song with our own experiences. So when they say “You” it could be anything. It could be interpreted in somebody else’s version of their obsession in their lives. In the context for Chan & Hyunjin though, the lyrics seem to relate to an obsession over their work. Chan’s lyric “I cannot breathe without you being right by my side, I'll die” could talk about his passion for music. Bc during God’s Menu, he was asked what producing meant to him & the way he compared it was like writing, composing, etc is like breathing and eating to him. He doesn’t have to think of it as work. It comes naturally to him. If he doesn’t have music he’ll die. It’s life to him. Chan’s also a perfectionist. Once he starts something he has to finish it or get it done no matter how exhausted he is (we’ve seen 3racha’s work ethic, esp during Kingdom). It’s kind of like having this toxic relationship or bad habit but you have this compulsion to work until you’re satisfied. He knows he shouldn’t overwork himself, and he’s trying to escape this need to but can’t. When he also says “No matter how hard I try to escape, there's no answer. Until I fall asleep in the sun, even deeper” Chan & Hyunjin & some of the other members are known to work until 5 sometimes 6 in the morning when the sun rises, bc they’re so compelled in their craft. Chan & Hyunjin are also the most sexualized members in the group, so comparing it to bdsm using chains/shibari in my opinion is such an artistic & creative way to portray feeling trapped but also finding pleasure in what they do.

    I've seen comments talking about how Chan and Lee Know's Drive use "driving" as a metaphor for sex and Chan and Hyunjin's Red Lights use sex as a metaphor for obsession and being a perfectionist / slave to their work and I think that's so fucking brilliant. I love that Skz are experimenting with a more mature concept now. Also, will you notice how Chan is the common factor? the core strength hyunjin has to hold that pose while dancing is so insane!! I knew he is super strong and always works hard on his dance, even chan said he is second strongest in skz (only after chan himself he said lmao), but stunts and stuff like that really remind me of that and i'm amazed everytime please the upper back is the only supported part, i'd be shivering trying to dance that and he makes it look like it's nothing to him. CONGRATULATIONS ON THE BEAUTIFUL WORK OF ART. KISSES FROM BRAZIL.👏👏👏👏👏😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍 💋💋💋💋👏👏👏👏👏👏 👏

    here's my (total reach of a) theory on the dining table scene:
    it's not supposed to be completely symmetrical, but 'familiar' in a way that one side can be the actual layout of the table, and the other side is what you 'remember' of it. i see it as a 'side effect' of when you get so in your head about obsessing with something or dealing with your inner demons, that the reality you see is sometimes skewed. not in a way that's completely insane and obvious, but little things.
    the pearls symbolise wisdom, white feathers (spiritually) are messages of support, while black feathers typically appear in times of crisis to let you know your angels are defending you... so it's like hyunjin's side is what people see, what a clear mind sees. positivity, light, support. while when you're in your head, you just immediately feel messier, like you're in a crisis that you can't get out of (chan's side), even though it's on the 'exact same table'.
    that's one way i guess? i am still going insane on all the hidden messages between every scene in this mv ㅠㅠ

    • @anikafrfr
      @anikafrfr 2 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      Omg I see what you mean, and this actually makes a lot more sense thn you think. I'm a person with OCD btw and OCD simply put is when you feel a desperate need and urge to do something but it's not necessary that there's a reason or thought behind doing it. If you do it, you tend to feel relieved in a way, but if you don't, it somehow bothers you all the time and you can't get it out of your mind. Sometimes that "thing" I feel the need to do is in my head the whole day and I keep trying to find an opportunity to do it even if there's no reason to it and nothing will happen if I don't which results in me not paying attention to anything properly, even important stuff and be really relactent about everything as if i don't have general sense of what's right and what's wrong. So like you said, when I'm completely okay, it's Hyunjin's side and in times like this, I'm not in my right mind which is Chan's side.

  • @oana0325
    @oana0325 2 ปีที่แล้ว +48

    They did explain that this song's message is tied to their work ethic and their relation with their craft - exactly like you said, no matter what they do they keep getting pulled back and they're fighting something within themselves - in this case, their 'obsession' with working and with creating art even outside of their work schedule almost out of habit and need rather than 'duty'. No matter what they do or how much free time they have, they still get pulled back almost unconsciously to their studio, to the practice room etc. (explicitly portrayed in the lyrics "No matter how hard I try to run away, set the mic up"). It's very interesting that they chose to express this compulsion through sensual (dare I say erotic?) metaphors - through the lyrics, the visual symbolism and the sticky beat; we might not all relate to being figuratively tied to a music studio or a practice room or to creating or performing at all, but we can all understand pure, raw, natural emotions and might be familiar with the feeling of not being able to escape our instincts or obsessions, which is why I personally think the sensuality of the song and the MV serves as a means to bring out the rawness (?) of this feeling - it makes it both relatable to the listener / viewer and it strengthens the main idea of the song that it's an obsession, a passion difficult to control and born out of human nature - much like erotic feelings. Aside from that, it's a side of Stray Kids that we might not get to see that often (the closest thing to this was, in my opinion, Hyunjin's "when the party is over" SKZ Player), so all jokes about chains and sexiness aside, it really does prove how versatile they are as artists and musicians. I'm not the best with words but this is what I got from putting together Chan and Hyunjin's own words about the song + the lyrics and the visuals.
    I always love your reactions and I'm looking forward to watching them, especially because you can often give insight that other reactors who are not Korean or don't speak Korean are not able to give. Keep up the good work. :)

    i just wanna share this, i told my friend to film herself reacting to this song, and she said she got chills and also she felt hot and her heart is beating fast. And I think all of us feel the same way... In her reaction her face was just like 😲😦😵😳. I even told her that her silence speaks for itself 😆
    also in chan's live he said that the song makes you feel on edge and... he's right, definitely right.
    red lights is sexy and all but if you dig through it, it’s basically a narration of someone being obsessed to someone to the point that it is already suffocating, which explains by the chain. red lights which tells us to the sign to stop before getting devoured by emotions. it's also like fighting with your own self? the good from the bad? trying to have everything under your control and that anxiety when you're reaching your limit.

    They literally cross all boundaries with their music. The more they grow and evolve, the more things they're able to portray; like, I'm sure Bangchan wouldn't have imagined doing this kinda concept, let's say, 2-3 years ago. You have to be exceptionally mature and stable to be able to bring out all these difficult states of a human mind. It's not easy, at all. This is art. It's not just sexy stuff, it's way deeper than that. Bangchan wanted it to have multiple layers, and he achieved it. He doesn't focus only on the 19+ aspect, and we shouldn't either. :)

  • @loranix

    My theory is that Hyunjin and chan are trying to the show that compulsion can have both positive and negative effects.
    The positive is that it protects you from the bad influence
    And the negative is that even if you can shield yourself from the bad influence there is always a way to be affected.
    The only way to say this that the song and mv is all about fighting for control and possession

    The amazing thing about this song is that all opinions will be accepted and everyone will understand it in their own way and no one will misinterpret the meaning It is literally art!

    When I watched the video on my own I did think it was like representation of yin and yang. But like you said with their color of clothing being the same i think it means like they are the same and need to work together to fight through possibly past events that might have been similar in a way since they were both in chains Almost like they are trapped with something personal on both sides. And that also makes me think about them portraying each other like a mirror. Like there going through the same tragedy and since they found each other they fill that by being together or by working together they can help heal each other. But they are being forced apart maybe from someone controlling them causing them to leave each other alone purposely to suffer on their own.

  • @layfia398
    @layfia398 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    What you guys said is true, there is a deeper meaning to this. If you watch their we howl in harmony episode where they discussed about what song they wanted to do (and they chose this song), they already kinda explained it that they wanted it to be a battle between their inner self or alter ego. Like bangchan and hyunjin said, for their case its their work, hyunjin said even though he loves practicing the reflection of himself in the mirror looks exhausted, while bangchan said that even when he’s supposed to be resting he still finds himself go to his workplace. Its like an obsession to do something that is already become a part of you. I think the way they used bdsm and masochism to compare it to pain and pleasure is smart, because they wanted to do a sexy concept yet want to convey a deeper meaning. They also said that they want it to be complicated. They did an amazing job with this and the directors too, the mv is so hauntingly beautiful. You guys also did an amazing job in interpreting it!! Thank you for reacting, i always love your stray kids reaction!!

    If you watch their video where they explain to the directors about what they want Hyunjin explains that its like the movie Venom where there are two sides to everyone and I think what they are saying is that there is our bad side is always fighting to come out. Our egos, our obsessions, our issues are always just below the surface and the chains represent our fight with that side of ourselves that no matter how we try its always there trying to stop us. It reminds me of light verses dark, good and evil. That we all have a good side and an evil side and this music video represents our fight to control that. Just my thoughts :)

I know that the visuals are too strong to focus on order things but there's something about this that it feels like soooo sensorial, sinister, obsessive and literally I almost could feel the suffocation. i think Chan represents the inner demon to Hyunjin’s performer, driving for more perfection, creativity, productivity, etc. this is why Chan is standing over HJ with glowing eyes or supports him later in the choreo. HJ’s interaction with the chains is him trying to tame that drive. in the mirror choreo, HJ is performing a bit more passively, and Chan a bit more aggressively. and the red lights are the after-image HJ sees from bright stage lights when he closes his eyes.

They want to do so much vlive,shows,bubble,TH-cam,music videos game shows ,producing and writing songs ,practicing and trying to please everyone and it can be suffocating ,they try to back away from it to breathe but it keeps pulling them back . I do think that the haters have sparked a rebellion with Skz and they are like nope, we r not taking anymore we don’t need to let that stuff try to tear us apart so they are putting everything out there saying hey we are together we love one another we are strong and healthy right now. I actually want to create a contemporary dance to this music and surprise my hubby for our 1st Anniversary. I feel like Chan has this amazingly unique vocal range that always sucks me in. But Hyungjin’s visual movements holds me grounded. This is how I feel when I see Got7’s Yugyeom perform his pieces, especially now that he is solo. Bang Chan and Hyungjin really balance each other out. Chan also can move but his more power where as Hyungjin is more fluid, but both have persuaded me to not only listen to this song multiple times, but actually create a performance piece.

    Going off what a lot of people say about it’s an obsession that has basically become a natural instinct, I can hear the personal experiences through the song, especially Chan who we all knows stays up doing what he loves and the rest of the members. The lines that got me the most were “I’m going crazy now, out of control. I’m staying up all night again” like chan or hyunjin isn’t satisfied with what he has created and in doing so continues to work, and this can apply to anyone who has work as their passion. And also the line that continues the mirror, I am you, you are me sort of theme. “Until I fall asleep in the sun, even deeper” to “Until the moon falls asleep, even deeper”. Then there’s that line “no matter how hard I try to run away, set the mic up” is Chan or anyone trying to break the obsession, the compulsion of perfection until satisfaction and not being able to leave things half done. I think this line can relate and reach out to a lot of people for anything. Work, a relationship. The lines in this song seem so perfectly placed, which is ironic considering this is a song trying to break the cycle of making things perfect. I love it.

    I agree with what you said.... I also believe that each is trying to get away from the other and they can't because they're one n there just stuck together like if you look at the scene where back-to-back their arms together with the shibari and I think It symbolises that as much as they try to get away from the other they can't because they are literally one , also yeah I did notice what jas talking about with the table it does look a little more messier like it's barely noticeable if you don't pay attention but there are things that are placed differently and on Chris' side it does look messier and on hyunjins side of like the white it's like tidy, clean and pure and placed properly and then on the other side where Chris's it's dark and misplaced.
    It does tell a story other than just sexy because yeah it's sexy but I don't think that's the storyline they went for, it's so much deeper .

    Yooo, my friend and I have the same theory as yours! In general, this reminds us of sex and aggression, id ego superego, OC itself and resistance. (we're psychology students so that's really the first things that got us), and she also mentioned how red lights is actually the STOP light. that's why whenever they close their eyes, they see red lights bcs they just want to stop but since there are chains, they cannot resist, they are trapped. and the mirrors were portrayed for the obsession but could also be the reflection one selves to their self. there's literally more to it than being sexy, it's sad that most are missing the actual points. hyunchan portrayed and conveyed the message welllll

Because they're constantly pulled back into each other and can't get away from, even if they fight for freedom. Very inspired and well depicted video. The toxic relationship could be with your own demons or with a special one

    Due to the flexible interpretation of the lyrics, I can imagine this song fitting in to 'Sweet Home'. I think it would fit better in some scenes than Imagine Dragons' 'Warriors' while maintaining the kind of energy in 'Warriors'.

    I've have been binged watching reaction videos on this coz i can't watch it alone 😂 been waiting for you guys..☺️
    An artist I really admired once said.. "if there are 500 audiences on his performance and that 500 person each have own interpretation of what the song is all about.. How great would that be?" it means that the effect of one thing into each & everyone could vary depending on the perception, experiences & beliefs of one another thus this song I believe could be interpreted into so many ways.. But i think your ideas are similar with mine too.. And of course this is super one of a kind sexy as hell form of art.
    Thank you for your reaction ❤️

    This MV hits parts of people souls they cannot even name. That's why everybody get sweat, hot, laughing in distress. I don't know if Stray Kids did it on purpose but it is very clever. They got everyone watching it more than once, trying to figure out what that emotion is.

    The red string reminds me of the whole red string of fate thing that I’ve seen in some Kdramas. Also, some of the items on the table can be kinda sexual if you looks at them individually. Pearl necklaces, feathers, avocados, oysters, etc. 🤷🏻‍♀️

    I definitely don’t think you’re wrong on the same person good side bad side whether it be your addiction your compulsion being the actual “bad“ but I also think that the choking the chains the ropes the domination is exactly what it appears to be as well because like in every other stray kids songs there are multiple meanings behind absolutely everything they do. Plus red lights red light District red room not only is it fit with the BDSM kind of vibe but it fits with the compulsion the obsessive Ness as well because if you have some thing off whether it’s a task you don’t complete or somethings out of place it sets off bells in your head like a warning so red lights also mean a warning they can also mean stop So I see the deeper meaning being the compulsion part of it while more of the blatant obvious surface is the sexy BDSM vibe and I’m living it for both

    I watch the mv and read the lyrics a lot of times trying to understand the deepness of the lyrics I just know what the song is all about as what they said on SKZ song camp. I really want to figure out the word choice they use. If interpreting the lyrics is my literature assignment I might might fail this 😆 I'm too focused on trying to figure out the lyrics and mv that the too much sexy elements of it doesn't sink in to me that much. (That's thanks to them saying it's sexy that my mind got ready about it. I'm calm watching this 😆 unlike Drive 🙃 that shz was unexpected)
    I really love this song. It's the first NOEASY song that I listened a lot because of how they sing it and the instrumental. Really a masterpiece!
