One thing i really like about ultrakill is how it forces you to learn the craziest, most insane techniques to get good, usually in games all you need is knowledge and mechanical skill to be good at it, but ultrakill amplifies that "requirement" by a TON to the point of the things you learn are some stuff that would usually belong in those crazy world record speedruns, but instead they end up being part of your average playthrough of your level, learning these crazy combos and movement techs is turned into a core part of the game.

The highlight for me was fighting the secret boss unlocked by P-raking all of act one. First of all, it's an amazing boss with the moveset and combos of a fighting game character, but what really sold me was the music. Trough the entirety of the lust layer, you hear about King Minos, a badass king who believed that loving someone isn't bad enough to end up in hell. He turned lust into a thriving city, only for angels to kill Minos (who was actually trying to resolve the conflict in peace), imprison his soul in his own rotting corpse and use said corpse to destroy everything he built. While exploring the remains of the city, the song that plays in the background sometimes switches from a high action combat song to a more sorrowful, melancholic melody. It highlights the tragedy of the lust layer, and gives it a whole new feeling. The melody comes back again in the room where the secret entrance to Minos' bossfight is located, telling the player that the king of the lust layer is near. Then you finally get to the boss, and the melody comes back yet again, only this time, instead of being filled with sadness, it's filled with determination and the pure wrath of Minos. It ties the fight to the story perfectly and makes it so incredible that being slammed against the ground by an old transparent man for 45 minutes straight didn't feel bad, unfair or frustrating at all.

As much as I love doom eternal, I feel like the lack of tech was what held it back from true perfection. In doom, your just using the guns and base movement abilities as intended. There's nothing wrong with that at all, but I was intrigued when I noticed the railgun and ballista knocked you back, but was then disappointed when the knockback wasn't good enough to make use of. Even though I'm not good at any of them, I respect the crap out of ultrakill, quake, dusk, team fortress 2, and titanfall 1 and 2 because of all the tech behind movement, physics, and weapon mechanics.

Even though I'm not good at any of them, I respect the crap out of ultrakill, quake, dusk, team fortress 2, and titanfall 1 and 2 because of all the tech behind movement, physics, and weapon mechanics.
I have never heard of this game before, thanks for talking about it
New Blood Interactive has made a lot of good games. I'm waiting for them to release Gloomwood on the 6th of September, and knowing their work in the past, I am not expecting it to disappoint, which is something I can't say for a lot of developers.
Pretty sure New Blood are just publishers, but they do publish great games from amazing devs
@@Westheimer836 Fair enough. I just assumed they made them considering their website says "We Make Video Games."
@@mcskeeter5361 and the fact that they made this and faith is astonishing. Should I get faith though?
@@niveth1 Faith is pretty good if you're into visceral horror. It's especially unique from an art perspective as well, making it a very fresh experience compared to other horror games.
I'm Swordsmachine, and I approve this message.
when John Ultrakill taught foekoe how to ultrakill it made me feel like he was the ultrakill and when foekoe said "its ultrakillin time" then ultrakilled everyone it reminded me how john ultrakill said that and it made me feel sad because he died and foekoe ultrakill used his catchphrase to honour him
there is no way what i just typed was a real sentence
I've been waiting for Foekoe to do a video on Ultrakill for so long and thank god it's finally here. jesus christ this game slaps so damn hard, it was a true experience when I first played it
3:21 Coolest game menu ever. What kinda of god designed this?
Hakita
Thank you for getting me into ultrakill, my life is irreparably changed for better and worse
0:58 this is
I shit you not
word for word
me explaining why ultrakills better than doom
doom is good and all
but ultrakill is pure crack
finally ultrakill video, you’re ultrakillin foekoe
finally youre talking about the indie dating simulator ultrakill!
The fact that he used neon white music in this video gives me hope that we will someday see a review on it
2:23 what the hell
One thing I don’t like about comparing ULTRAKILL to Doom eternal, is that this game was released a year *before* Doom Eternal
0:08 wait you start with a marksman pistol???
Yes. source:trust me bro
the very fact that hakita looked at a rocket launcher and said "yea what if you could do fortnite rocket riding" makes this the greatest game ever made
damn
damn
damn
damn
YOOOOO ULTRAKILL REVIEW I love this game to death, ty Foekoe
I definitely feel like an underrated aspect of this game is how unique its take on hell is, and how good it is at breaking your expectations over and over again
At the end it somehow manages to take a bland, generic hell palette, and make it SHOCKING again, give it all the edge and setup it needs for it to actually matter to the game
Its amazing
It's lightly inspired by the divine comedy layers. Even though Hakita hasn't read it.
@@REEtorallygear111 Yeah duh, i seriously can't believe no other popular game has done this before
4:56 so cute. Would wear too~
Like really uwu
Awesome to see more TH-camrs cover this game, it's amazing.
0:26 but im poor .-.
Skill issue
Ultrakill literally beat every first person shooter in depth of game mechanics, it gets deeper and deeper as the updates come
When you play ultrakill, and the sound starts breaking because of you
You know you are doing it right
Gotta admit I love the thumbnail art
DOOM: Shoot gun ask questions later
ULTRAKILL: use weapon aks questions never
ultrakill basically a dopamine machine
I’m excited for that boss
fun fact the room with the markiplier reference has more youtuber references in each coffin but in one of them the skull is blue which you can place on the blue pedestal that you can place the skull on to so you can fight a secret boss
I want to mention your also my favourite youtuber I love your content and I always like to get some popcorn and enjoy an actual person that I can relate to
It's silly to compare Ultrakill to Doom. I mean, Ultrakill's tagline is literally "Devil May Quake"
Great video Foekoe !
Now please, next time DO NOT upload ULTRANUTS when my teacher is checking my phone for duolingo class.
Good review, covered a lot of ground! Didn't spoil too much, didn't push the game too hard, didn't linger for *too* long on the Doom Eternal comparison. I've seen just about every ULTRAKILL review on TH-cam (I also have over 1k hours over the past 6-7 months, I have a problem) and this is in the top 5 reviews of it that I've seen. Nice work!
"BEHOLD, THE POWER OF AN ANGEL!!" the spare change in my pocket :
So happy you covered this game, It’s so your style
the hampter is the perfect sacrifice to the omnipotent fumo god who will crash your game when you free him, theres a whole speedrunning category dedicated to getting to the end of the titanic level before the fumo god crashes your game
YESSS IVE BEEN WAITING FOR A ULTRAKILL VIDEO FOR SO LONG
I first found ultrakill through one of my best friends , I played it and LOVED it
We had a really fun time playing it in discord VC and he dubbed over Gabriel lines while we played it was so funny
watched through half of the video, decided i'd go and buy ultrakill and perfected pretty much everything it had to offer, thanks foekoe
Been here watching this games development since it first came out on itch, so happy to see how far it’s come and the popularity it’s gained
Been hooked on this game lately, glad you made a video on it
