Besides that TV Mogul's wife, there were a lot of Gunsmoke fans. I remember as a very young girl sitting in front of the little TV set and watching the half hour western in black and white, along with my grandparents and the rest of the family. Also, in my dad's declining years, he watched Gunsmoke re-runs.... repeatedly. Now, my brother is watching Gunsmoke on DVD in his declining years. And while my son is no where near old age or dementia, he is addicted to Gunsmoke, too. Others of the family still enjoy watching the show with our bother. My friends and I compare which family members still appreciate that old western tv series. Gilligan's Island was also a much watched show in my youth. But, there's not one person in my family who seems interested in it today. I am not dissing the show. I'm HERE, right? And I plan to find the series and watch it again ... the first time in about 45 or 50 years.
When I was in the 1st, 2nd and 3rd grades I would get home after school and watch it. I recall quite clearly that it came on at 3:30pm every weekday on WLAC channel 5 in Nashville. I was a troubled child living in a dysfunctional household and it was a great source of comfort for me. Even at an early age I knew the show was silly but it was also far more creative than a lot of critics have given it credit for being. Strangely enough I recall hearing the news on tv in 1971 that Bob Denver had been arrested for possession of weed. It amazes me to this day how much information I soaked up from tv as a child.
I wish today's tv writers could come up with a series as funny and entertaining as Gilligan's Island ---- but they just CAN'T!! What a great cast! What a zany premise!
I did not know that Gilligan's Island was taken off of the air for gunsmoke. I remember running home from school at 3:00 Central Time to be able to watch Gilligan's Island at 3:30. And I do remember turning the channel to Gilligan's Island and it being gunsmoke on. As much as I like gunsmoke I would have rather seen Gilligan's Island when I got home from school.

It's definitely one of the greatest tragedies in television history for Gilligan's Island to be canceled because of that. What a shame, I always wonder what could've been if the show lasted at least a few more seasons, such a great show to watch, my favorite growing up.
It's odd that CBS couldn't find a different show to cancel and keep both Gunsmoke and Gilligan's Island. Also Gunsmoke is an hour long and Gilligan is only half an hour

He was the SPOCK of the island. I've said that when the CGI technology gets good enough and co$t effective enough they'll be able to do "cast switching" - and switch the actors & actresses of any given TV show or movie. If the cast of Star Trek was to be switched with Gilligan's Island on the island: Spock would definitely be the professor, Captain Kirk would obviously be the Skipper. Ginger would be the Green martian chick ( Yvonne Craig ) Chekov or Kevin Reilly would have to be Gilligan.

Gunsmoke portrayed a violent era in American history hence the violence genius but Gunsmoke was a better show than Gilligan's Island any day which is why it lasted 8 more seasons and spawn a bunch of made for TV movies
They could have moved Gilligan to a different night. Gunsmoke wasn't that great. And a wife should not be telling her husband what show to watch. But there's that old adage if mama ain't happy ain't nobody happy. But that's just was wrong

I grew up loving and watching Gilligan’s Island. During my early teens, I was fortunate enough to see live filming of the Dallas show in my neighborhood, with Tina Louise. She was pompous, rude to the film crew and even ruder to the kids gathered near her, idolizing her. She shouted to the crew, “got these brats out of here! Even stopped filing, to demand a mirror from the crew I. Order to check her make-up. She finished her small outdoor scene and drove off set. Immediately, the crew tossed their hats into the air and cheered. That’s probably elegy she had no major roles after Gilligan’s Isle. Loved character, but not her personally!🫣😧🙁☹️
I absolutely loved Gilligans Island and don't remember Gunsmoke on TV at all as a child growing up in 60s Australia. Sherwood Swartz was a genius as he also was the producer of another wildly popular show in Australia The Brady Bunch
Yes, I knew about the blatant nepotism that created the decision to cancel GI and another show to enable rescinding Gunsmoke's cancelation in order to please then CBS executive William Paley's wife Babe - but as others said, he probably wanted to have peace in his bedroom - sounds like he didn't know his wife well if he didn't know her TV preferences. Somewhere along the line I read that if a 4th season were permitted to film, they were planning to write out Tina Louise after the first couple episodes since she was so unhappy bein on and was not exactly universally loved by the rest of the cast: supposedly a rescue ship spots Ginger alone on the beach and brings her back to the mainland. The rest of the castaways look for her for 3 days and then hear her voice on the radio documenting how she was rescued - but somehow is not able to give the authorities the precise location of the island.
Could you have used better words in your title for this video? It's worded as if there was one scene in the series that caused the problem by being controversial...this is totally not the case....just lost eight minutes of my life watching this...
I always watched this show when I got home from school. It was the only show that I would stay inside to watch. It was just so funny. Now that I'm older and understand more it's even funnier. Love this show. 😅😂

Here's 2 I can think of: 1- When Gilligan discovered a strong tree sap that the professor used to fix the boat, but then he found out it had expired. So Gilligan staged driving the minnow (on land) and everyone saw it get destroyed as the wooden planks curled off. It was very exciting. 2- When they discovered an old WW2 large round mine, it turns out to be magnetic. At the end, Gilligan takes the raft and magnetically draws it out of the lagoon, but it keeps following him. The music was amazing when he was rowing super-fast!
Good Bye Island! Pancake syrup that would solve everything....if only it lasted more than 3 days! The whole darn boat coming apart at the end just made no sense. Just watched it for the 100th time though!

It was the wife of the president of CBS. She didn't want Gunsmoke to be taken off the air, she asked her president husband to take Gilligan's Island off the air. When Gilligan's Island was taken off the air it still had high ratings
I don't doubt that the story is true but I have to wonder what other show was canceled? In that era Gunsmoke was an hour-long while Gilligan's Island was only 30 minutes so another show would have had to go to
In my opinion, Gilligan's Island was the greatest TV show of all time, Gunsmoke, not so much. Everyone on Gilligan's Island was such a nice person. Just such a wonderful group of talented people from a time of unprecedented creativity. The 20th century was so full of creative energy and ideas and new media forms with so much yet to be explored. What a beautiful time to be an American, even through all the tough times, entertainment kept on keeping on, providing people with hope and inspiration. Time marches on , but is preserved in various media for future and present generations to enjoy. Still, nothing quite like the written word of master story tellers and wordsmiths such as Charles Dickens and Mark Twain who continue to entertain,inspire,and educate people so many years beyond their time on this planet.
Notice that in the later versions of the show, the girls could show their belly buttons, which was not allowed in the original. Maryanne had specially made shorts with high waste line to cover hers in the original.
Yes Gilligan's Island is popular in its own way but as my Sister Maureen said if you see the first half first it is bad enough, I saw the 2nd half first of which was more tolerable that the first but still has its typical predictable premise that's typical of Gilligan's Island too.

Unpopular opinion: Gilligan had the perfect number of episodes/seasons (unlike Lost or HIMYM). If they had had the notion to do the made-for-TV movie immediately, it would have been great, although possibly not as epic.

I remember watching Gilligan's as I can and I'm pretty sure it was the reruns and syndicated TV. I always wondered why the skipper professor and Gilligan always wear the same clothes and the Howells , Mary Ann and ginger always had different outfits. And where did they get these other outfits from? Why did the radio always work? How did the girls make coconut cream pie with no oven? It was a fun show to watch. Poor Gilligan he always got in trouble😊 It's also sad that they're all gone except for ginger who I believe is still alive and then her 90s. Then there was Mary Ann who just passed away within the last few years due to covid.😢
At first, I do admit I did like the show. I mean, after a year on the island, they all still wore clean and freshly laundered clothing, had plenty to eat and etc, so the novelty began to wear off and I quit watching. I didn't know Gunsmoke replaced it, but that was a show of my youth, so would have enjoyed it much better anyway.
never watched gunsmoke and I was born in 1949, never appealed to me. Looked like a bunch of old people to me trying to be cowboys, it didn't appeal to our generation my great aunts watched this show in the 1950s, old people's show
What an absolutely pathetic reason to get rid of a quality show. Surely there were other shows that could've easily been cancelled. Makes no sense to get rid of a successful show like that. We probably would have eventually gotten a rescue show and they could have ended the show properly on a high note. Instead we got ragtag movies of well aged characters that were just ok.

I always heard that it was taken off the air in favor of Gunsmoke because the head of the network watched it with his grandson and was pissed when he came back off vacation and found it was canceled.
Back in those days most of those shows did not have finales they didn’t even know it was going off the air until it happened and that was not a great thing either and the show should’ve had a Fourseason because it was a great one I wish they wouldn’t know when there’s a hot tad of time and they could’ve tried to fight this but back in those days it didn’t happen like that no more shows nowadays when they go off have a Bonelli but not back then

I absolutely loved Gilligans Island and don't remember Gunsmoke on TV at all as a child growing up in 60s Australia. Sherwood Swartz was a genius as he also was the producer of another wildly popular show in Australia The Brady Bunch
Gunsmoke never appeared on TV in Australia because it was crap. But then, Gilligan's Island was too.

Yes, I knew about the blatant nepotism that created the decision to cancel GI and another show to enable rescinding Gunsmoke's cancelation in order to please then CBS executive William Paley's wife Babe - but as others said, he probably wanted to have peace in his bedroom - sounds like he didn't know his wife well if he didn't know her TV preferences. Somewhere along the line I read that if a 4th season were permitted to film, they were planning to write out Tina Louise after the first couple episodes since she was so unhappy bein on and was not exactly universally loved by the rest of the cast: supposedly a rescue ship spots Ginger alone on the beach and brings her back to the mainland. The rest of the castaways look for her for 3 days and then hear her voice on the radio documenting how she was rescued - but somehow is not able to give the authorities the precise location of the island.
There would have to be more to it than that because the rescue ship would know where the island was.
Could you have used better words in your title for this video? It's worded as if there was one scene in the series that caused the problem by being controversial...this is totally not the case....just lost eight minutes of my life watching this...
I always watched this show when I got home from school. It was the only show that I would stay inside to watch. It was just so funny. Now that I'm older and understand more it's even funnier. Love this show. 😅😂

@@FactsVerse I don't know, there were so many excellent 1's. Here's 2 I can think of:
1- When Gilligan discovered a strong tree sap that the professor used to fix the boat, but then he found out it had expired. So Gilligan staged driving the minnow (on land) and everyone saw it get destroyed as the wooden planks curled off.
It was very exciting.
2- When they discovered an old WW2 large round mine, it turns out to be magnetic. At the end, Gilligan takes the raft and magnetically draws it out of the lagoon, but it keeps following him. The music was amazing when he was rowing super-fast!

Good Bye Island! Pancake syrup that would solve everything....if only it lasted more than 3 days! The whole darn boat coming apart at the end just made no sense. Just watched it for the 100th time though!

I don't doubt that the story is true but I have to wonder what other show was canceled? In that era Gunsmoke was an hour-long while Gilligan's Island was only 30 minutes so another show would have had to go to
I’ve been watching Sherwood Schwartz’s Film Archive interviews. It was a new show so it ended up being cancelled before it was ever aired.
In my opinion, Gilligan's Island was the greatest TV show of all time, Gunsmoke, not so much. Everyone on Gilligan's Island was such a nice person. Just such a wonderful group of talented people from a time of unprecedented creativity. The 20th century was so full of creative energy and ideas and new media forms with so much yet to be explored. What a beautiful time to be an American, even through all the tough times, entertainment kept on keeping on, providing people with hope and inspiration. Time marches on , but is preserved in various media for future and present generations to enjoy. Still, nothing quite like the written word of master story tellers and wordsmiths such as Charles Dickens and Mark Twain who continue to entertain,inspire,and educate people so many years beyond their time on this planet.

Guntoke was good but Gilligans Island was as well and was completely different
Notice that in the later versions of the show, the girls could show their belly buttons, which was not allowed in the original. Maryanne had specially made shorts with high waste line to cover hers in the original.

I remember watching Gilligan's as I can and I'm pretty sure it was the reruns and syndicated TV. I always wondered why the skipper professor and Gilligan always wear the same clothes and the Howells , Mary Ann and ginger always had different outfits. And where did they get these other outfits from? Why did the radio always work? How did the girls make coconut cream pie with no oven? It was a fun show to watch. Poor Gilligan he always got in trouble😊
It's also sad that they're all gone except for ginger who I believe is still alive and then her 90s. Then there was Mary Ann who just passed away within the last few years due to covid.😢

At first, I do admit I did like the show. I mean, after a year on the island, they all still wore clean and freshly laundered clothing, had plenty to eat and etc, so the novelty began to wear off and I quit watching. I didn't know Gunsmoke replaced it, but that was a show of my youth, so would have enjoyed it much better anyway.

never watched gunsmoke and I was born in 1949, never appealed to me. Looked like a bunch of old people to me trying to be cowboys, it didn't appeal to our generation my great aunts watched this show in the 1950s, old people's show

What an absolutely pathetic reason to get rid of a quality show. Surely there were other shows that could've easily been cancelled. Makes no sense to get rid of a successful show like that. We probably would have eventually gotten a rescue show and they could have ended the show properly on a high note. Instead we got ragtag movies of well aged characters that were just ok.

I always heard that it was taken off the air in favor of Gunsmoke because the head of the network watched it with his grandson and was pissed when he came back off vacation and found it was canceled.
