This is a Wexford song, a county in the SE corner of Ireland (a county in Ireland is the equivalent of a US State) and for me, this is one of the finest versions of this song (It's normally sang at a faster tempo wrongly imo). The "98" that Mary Travers refers to is 1798, when a rebellion against British rule took place. Although not exclusively in Wexford, Antrim being another county who rose up against oppression, it's mainly associated with Wexford. Speaking as an Irish man, and more importantly as a Wexford man (😜), Mary Travers' last verse would stand up the hairs on the back of your head. Loch Garman abu (Irish for Up Wexford).

Wonderful music, great performance. And incendiary stuff in the 1960s, throwing petrol on the fire which turned into The Troubles and thousands of dead bodies. I know it is about an event in 1798, where a rebellion against the British was ruthlessly put down. But to sing in the 1960s "we will follow in their footsteps" was... troublesome. (And yes, I bought the album, at the time, and was never totally comfortable about this one).
I disagree it's a traditional Irish song and is history still relevant to Ireland and other countries. It's a historical account not to be forgotten (btw I'm Anglo Irish descent)
Its odd how Mary seems to love to shake her head back and forth in jumpy style on many of the songs they sing. Why doesn't she sing keeping her head in one place just once. Maybe I am one who notices such but they are and were great in singing.
Some people will tap their feet when singing (or playing an instrument), Mary tosses her head. As someone said she is passionate about her music. I always enjoyed watching her swing her hair around. Peter and Paul (mostly Peter) both sometimes tap their feet so loudly it can be heard during the song. At least Mary's head tossing is silent. 🤫🙂

I always love watching Mary and her sudden head movements. She is absolutely precious in her performance, and her voice is beautiful!

I think a passionate singer like Mary just naturally punctuates her lyrics with body movements. Plus, she looked great doing it!
