I think that switch happens when you stop translating in your head and start understanding. The mistake a lot of people make when learning a language is hearing it, translating it to the native language, thinking of a response in their native language, then translating that back to their target language.
Native speakers just hear it, then think of a response, no translating involved. It's pretty obvious when you think about it, but a lot of people just don't think about and end up doing it anyway. The sooner you know, the easier it might be to make it a habit to not translate. When you hear 'arbre', don't think of the word 'tree', just have the image of it, like you do when you hear 'tree'.

Bonsior ma belle. Je m'appele Yasmine Charles. Je suis nee en Haiti mais j'habite au Etats-Unis. Il y 30 ans depuis que j'ai quitte mon pays a l'age de 12 ans, donc naturellement mon francais et un peu "rusty" mais je comprends presque tout . Tes videos m'aide beacoup et je t'aprecie. Je suis une grande cuisinaire sur TH-cam, Yasmine's Cooking Show and your cooking, banana bread is my favorite because it reminded me of french culinary terms I've forgotten. I'm sure there are errors in my spelling, but I'm proud that I've improved so much that I did not run for my francais/anglais dictionnaire. On peut avoir plusieurs vies...Faires des choses que nous faisons fibre...I identify a lot with that because I'm the kind of person who likes to do a lot of things, and be good at them...Right now I'm doing business, music, languages
and I'm trying also to be more conscious about life...I've read several books and heard several considered successful people say that we should choose one thing in order to be successful, but I simply can't because I feel bored doing just one thing

I have spent years and years thinking I would ;like to rent a flat in Paris and spend a winter there. Maybe going to a little outside cafe and having a coffee while I read a book. Unfortunately I have had a stroke and now cannot walk. But I have decided ?I am going to walk again and go to Paris but after listening to these two I think I should change my plans. I did not understand one word and am too far behind trying to learn to speak fluently. Which is hard to take as was in France a couple decades ago and did fine speaking to people

I used the program LIngQ to download the french subtitles of this then work through the dialogue with LingQ. You can do the same with french films on netflix. The program makes the conversation comprehensible.

Je trouve plus difficile pour moi de suivre les dialogues quotidiens que les interviews comme celle-ci.
