Yes, 114 mph, but outrun by A4 Pacific Mallard that still holds the world record for steam at 126 mph. But I remember these in Crewe as a child known then as Duchess Class. All 20th century Light Music is magic to me, Eric Coates being my favourite, but Vivien Ellis composed a masterpiece here.

Back when we MADE things like this. Lovely looking train, doubtlessly much more comfortable to ride in than today's plasticy, souless sardine boxes with their ironing board seats. The last trains built that were like the Coronations were the BR MK1 and MK2 coaches, and the MK3s. Give me a long-distance service of MK1 or 2 stock anytime. Reliable, seats that were nice and lined up with windows, loos that don't stink...Oh and of course a PROPER Diesel, or Electric loco. I'm too young to recall the splendid Coronation locos LOL. Even the old EMU/DEMU/DMMU's were nice decent machines. Spent many happy hours working for BR ( SR ) on them. Glad I retired when I did.

I have always admired the workmanship of the brits - you have magicians inventing and crafting marvelous things - be it in a shed or large a large industry complex. Mass production may be a 'quality' today, but it can't compare with the 'finest'. I'd rather buy one handmade object made in a british garage than 200 things from china through ebay.

    • @Glenn1967ful

I am hoping now Branson has gone, Avanti can make the seats more comfortable for standard class passengers. The comfort is poor and the seats too thin, unlike the armchair type seats on Mark 3.
