I think this is the first part of the game that begins your "descent". It's right before you face the water monster, but the music is almost saying that as you get closer to your goal, you are going to slowly uncover an evil that you cannot comprehend, and it will question yourself and everything around you.

also this place truly set the scene for next horror what was ahead. the water monster, as this sort of was just build up, then next you get thrown in to the water monster, which is much worse.

I'm glad they never explained the eerie darkness in this section.
It just makes the castle itself more terrifying.

Daniel: It sure is dark in here
Alexander: Yes, and there is a good reason for it. But you can light the lamp now if you wish.
Daniel: What's the reason? For the darkness, that is?
Alexander: Stay close, be careful not to stray
Daniel: What's the reason? Why is it so dark?
Alexander: Pay attention, Daniel. It's important that you keep going straight and make sure not to stray.

@@ValendianCrafts I think Alexander knew the Shadow would bring monsters to hunt them down so he built the entire castle with that in mind, monsters cannot see you in the darkness

@@JuanAntonioGarciaHeredia Shadow can cause unnatural darkness to appear and the castle was centuries old by that point. You can see the specially unnatural darkness in Storage, which is one of the most dangerous areas in the game.
Alexander was not 100% sure about Shadow/the guardian's actions but knew it would consume one who stole the orb.

@@JuanAntonioGarciaHeredia The "monsters" you see throughout the game are servants of Alexander, unless you're referring to the Shadow or Kaernk(?).

@@icespeaker81 There is a corpse of a grunt servant split in half by presumably a brute servant.
Maybe Alexander feared they could turn against him at some point so he built that hallway with that in mind just in case

how come the refinery was such an eerie place? what was the reason why it was so dark? Why does it have this horrific soundtrack?

.:WARNING, IF YOU HAVEN'T PLAYED THE GAME, THESE ARE SPOILERS:.
Because that's where you encounter the first Grunt. The shadow also lurks there making it a lot darker. It's supposed to be one of the more dark and creepy places. This game is supposed to be dark and atmospheric. I guess in a way they were trying to give you a taste of what has yet to come.

One of the most haunting but also nostalgic and relaxing tracks. You just start to think about the past with Daniel & Alexander. I would love if they made a prequel and showed what happened before Daniel got his amnesia and headed into the castle alone. I'm sure there is a lot of untold great stories, they sure hinted at it a lot in this game with all the flashbacks. Very interesting background. Alexander sounds hell of mysterious too and I want to know what went down when they were working together. Not just seeing him in his old broken form at the end.

Well at some point Daniel recognized the fact he was torturing innocent people to save himself (but it was Alexander who had been using him all the time). Horrified by this, he chose to forget everything by drinking the amniotic draught. He wrote the letter at the beginning of the game to warn him of the intentions of Alexander.

@@ValendianCrafts Yeah I know that but I still would like to see in video game form the prequel of what happened before Daniel got his amnesia. Maybe it will never become a thing but it would be awesome to see Frictional Games make something like that. So far Amnesia: The Dark Descent, Penumbra and SOMA has been their most successful titles. I haven't played Rebirth, Justine or Machine For Pigs but I have heard mixed stuff. Nothing that's making it seem too interesting or appealing.

I just realized this, but you can just barely make out a few sounds used in the “safe from kaernk” track. Crazy foreshadowing. 0:20

      Do it ;)
there are actually custom stories that also try tell story what happened after the events of the game, like how you control Daniel to escape from Brennenburg, however chased by someone you left behind.
