This man looks really intense to work with, but I feel like by the end of the job you’d actually be able to walk out and say I learned how to do this job the proper way. This guy is a real working class American

You can do under 1000sqft DIY for 5k it just won't be one day. I do 100 feet for 5k including sump pump.

DaizM Hey now, I use to flip houses, designed and built kitchens and baths and homes. I've a Kitchen and also a Bath that were in Better Homes and Gardens Magazine once upon a time. Way too much bullshit in that. I design and build only for myself now. Let's keep it a secret. I turned down the DIY channel two years ago. TV shows have a director, producer and script writer. I'd wipe my ass with a script and probably smack the shit out of the other two. I might consider a show having a co star with D cups. Imagine that? Men would watch because i'd say what they wish they could and women would watch to throw shit at the TV screen! Thanks for your support. - Daniel J OConnor

@@DanielJOConnor YEP. People don't appreciate enough a job that's professionally and well done. They want you in and out. Cheap. That's why I only work with people who can appreciate I will be there longer than other contractors, but they won't see me again. And if they do, it'll be to hire me to do more work for them. On my own house, I can't stand babysitting people who are SUPPOSED to be professionals. That's why I got MY OWN contractor's license--because I spent so much time doing the research and checking their work only to find they'd f'd it up! What a PITA!

Hello Daniel, I own a basement waterproofing company in Michigan. I've been doing it for 10 years now, however I am constantly trying to learn more everyday to better my company. You are the most knowledgeable contractor I've come across in this trade that I would trust and can relate to. There isn't a lot of people who can handle basement waterproofing or have the will power to continue prospering.I would like to personally thank you for your expertise and taking the time to make these videos. Keep up the good work. Hope your business continues to succeed, you deserve it.

Hey Mike. MY videos are for everyone. I wish someone did this kind of thing when I was young and not very experienced. That would be way back when there were no cell phones and believe it or not, not even ATM's. A pack of cigarettes was 50 cents and a gallon of gas 38 cents. Imagine that? Damn I'm an old SOB. Once I pulled into a gas station and paid 25 cents to get home. My advice is to go out each day and do your very best. Success is inevitable. Thanks for making me feel good and appreciating my efforts. - Daniel J OConnor

I'm fortunate to have numerous people who are well versed in a variety of skilled professions who wont hesitate to tell me if I'm doing it wrong or if the previous repair is wrong. Yeah, make sure that you go downstairs several times to check. And make them stop if they aren't doing it right and get someone else. Don't feel like you'd have to pay them for what they've done if they're doing it wrong, either. Take pictures and don't let them tell you that just because you watch a video doesn't mean you know what you are talking about; just take them to court. If they try to tell you it's unsafe for you to come down, just go down anyway. They've got all kinds of tricks if they're doing it wrong.

Hey Bill, I've always been this way. In the past I endured the mistrust homeowners have of Contractors. For any kind of Contractor starting out, they are told to follow the pattern of a successful Company. Isn't it hysterical that for any Contractor to have a successful Company all they need do is have pride in their work? Do the best work they can? From the many Comments I get on my videos from many Contractors, they, you, and myself are changing the entire Home Improvement Industry for the better. The lying ass sleazeball Con Artist Contractors can't fool a customer anymore. Thanks to Google and You Tube so many people are finally getting professional service and what they pay for. It's nice seeing a contractor with integrity, it restores my faith in humanity. Especially when there is soooo many people getting screwed over, and bad guys don't exactly come with a warning label.
I currently live in an apartment who's owned by a "roofing contractor" the eaves are rotting & there's a giant yellow jacket nest in the corner of my living room. I had to tape plastic over the stove & bathroom vents because the wasps were getting in. There's nothing more unsettling than the sound of them scratching in the walls/ceilings, almost like the sound of rain on a tin roof. The owner/contractor guy doesn't care, and I just sit here waiting for my ceiling to fall in.
Before anyone who might see this I have already gone to my rental place in gov't for advice. They advised me to keep my mouth shut because the contractor guy is connected, and with a shortage in housing that I'd risk getting kicked out.
Again very nice to see a contractor with a conscience & integrity.

Greenfield Wisconsin (suburb of Milwaukee) my two family home was built in 1938. I had six contactors come over to give me estimates on my leaky basement. One area in particular a well that has been capped leaks every time it rains. Only ONE company talked about the outside. I will have a sump pump installed and they will dig outside around the perimeter. They also installed at no extra charge an "easy breath" fan that pulls in air from the basement floor and pumps it outside. Everdry will be starting the work in two months. Total cost $21,000.00. Thanks for your videos Daniel. I'm 63 and retired this is the home I grew up in. Moved out in 1973 and moved back in 1993. Mike from Milwaukee. Thanks again for all you do. Think I will tip these guys when they are done, looks like hard work to me.

The Proper Answer is will you can't afford me!
What it really should be you can't afford not to hire me.
Because if the first bid was too much then the redo will kill him!

Hey Dan, not sure if you will read this or not but we have conversed before. I installed a pressure relief system in my mothers basement. The pump hadn't gone off for the longest time so I went over to check it out today. It just so happened that shortly after I got there a big storm rolled thru and sure enough the basement stayed dry and the sump went off like 8 times. I could hear the weep holes gurgling. This system works well and the basement is dry as a bone. Thanks again Dan. I honestly couldn't have done this job without your videos on youtube and believe me, I searched around on here for a while until I found your vids. Wow nice video . I bought my house in 2003 and it had this trench system already installed. Fast forward to 2015 and we had a few days of down pouring rain. like 4" in an hour. I checked the basement and WOW it looked like a strainer. leaks everywhere. Id bet there were 20 plus holes pouring in . PLUS the chimney ash pit in the wall was pouring water out like a water fall. The water line coming into the house had water coming in around it like a hose. Its good we had the floor drain working and I installed a very good brand sum pump a few years back so water was going out fast enough to keep it below an inch.
I think I helped the water pipe issue by moving the down spout further from house . The back wall is bowed in since we lived here. The upper roof gutter was pouring over the center so we had new gutters installed .. My house isnt big. Id say its about 27 foot square . 1456 sq foot inside . and the attached garage is on one side . We had an estimate a few years ago for $12,000 . I cant afford that . I got forced to put a new roof on for $7,000 in 2006 and I had to credit card it.
im just looking for options . The estimate was for outside. digging a trench and installing waterproofing from outside . . Any info you have would be helpful . I live in Syracuse NY

Others attempt to challenge me. Oh how I love those who make that mistake. I enjoy making new enemies in the Industry. Goodness me there are plenty here on you tube. My life is and shall always be about making a difference. That difference is to be loyal to each of my Customers and do my very best to provide a professional experience and solve every issue. When I put another owner to shame face to face and here on You Tube, I hope they think about it and perhaps get it. In that my wish is to make a greater difference by changing this Industry. +js4653 Yes, my videos have made quite an impact on the industry. But it's the new guys learning from them. Companies in other states out of my area use them to train crews and salesmen. They want to know how and why and become successful. They want to do their best. There is only one issue, I always do all four walls. I can think of maybe 5 or ten one or two wall systems we've done in ten years. Three of those jobs we went back some years later to do the other walls. Yes those other jobs have had no further problem so the one wall system was all they needed. To me an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. I am glad they did it right and do hope you have no further issues. Not sure if you know NJ and Eastern PA are my area. Thanks for your interest. - Daniel J OConnor

I found this video to be a real eye opener. Sure it might not be to everyone's taste, but it certainly did the job for me. I cant hire the guy cause I live in Aust, but at least now I know my basement problem is not an easy fix. I have cut two holes in each corner of my basement, dug about 3 foot down in each and am currently bailing the water out manually.
The only bit I still cant work out is I am baling out about 100 litres of water a week even in hot dry summer (I have had EVERY pipe around the place looked at and its definitely only ground water). The other thing I cant work out is why one hole produces cloudy murky smelly water (its not sewage I had it checked out) and the other hole only 10 feet away produces crystal clear water.

Daniel, What a fantastic exposé! Very informative. By using numbers, you give absolute proof that the owners were ripped off (7 men to redo job, cannot be done in 1 day, $5,000.00 down the drain, 3/4 concrete, etc.) Even mentioning the conversation between owner and salesperson across the kitchen table-> I saw this sort of thing happen with my parents and that's when I decided to be an informed homeowner. You are honest and caring (You wouldn't yell if you did not care :) people like you do a great job exposing ripoff artists. Thank you! (Nearly threw up when you busted the concrete up)

I like your passion about bad repairs because there are a ton of them in every field. However wouldn't the proper way to fix any basement leak be from the outside? I'm no expert but I repaired my own foundation and found cracks or holes below grade where most if not all the water was coming in. I know cinder blocks are porous and will allow water to pass though them if too much pressure is built up on 1 side. However wouldn't letting water though the cinder block degrade the block itself over time? I repaired my foundation by going down about 8 inches below the footing. I than cleaned the wall opened up all the cracks and holes with a chisel to at least 1/4 inch and angled the cuts to look like a V \ / so cement could get a better hold, also wet block before adding cement. Once wall was dry and clean applied that black tarry rubbery foundation sealer stuff forget name, sorry. Once cured added about 2 inches 3/4 drainage by 18 inch wide below footer. Added 4 inch pvc with holes facing down on top of that and than back filled with 3/4 rock up foundation wall till last 2 feet which was regular dirt. Had a slope on drainage pipe which I lead out to open air. Also added a vertical solid 4in pipe to surface at beginning of run with cap so can jet or snake it at will. Didn't use any cloth for drainage rock since soil was mostly clay. No idea if this was right or wrong but 7 years later basement is bone dry and pipes are still clear.

The videos are very good. He demonstrates the tried and true ways of doing things. He exposes most of the "new systems" and cheaper alternatives for what they are - shortcuts. The level of the pipe is very important. It should be down at the level of the footer, not on top of it. Luckily the contractors I used did the same method Daniel uses, but I had to do a lot of research and reading to find them, otherwise I would be stuck with the "on top of the footer" system.

My parents basement leaks through their basement windows. The windows are 70 years old and the frames completed rusted out. You can put your hand through the holes and the window wells flood with water because they have never been dug out and have no drainage. Some guy quoted them $15,000 to put in a trench system when that was never their issue. I like this dude, he tells it like it is.

I watched about an hour worth of your videos because I'm considering a french drain for my basement. Wow. I really can't thank you enough! Afterwards I watched a couple sales pitch videos for other less expensive systems. I totally get it now. I can see how other contractors can build a reputation on those systems for homes that might get "some" water in the basement. However, their systems are likely to eventually fail because they're just a band aid. They won't permanently work if more water gets in over time - which it certainly will! I even had a salesman give me a pitch in my own home and he quoted me $5000 (this was before I knew anything at all) and I told him his bid was much lower than I expected - I expected to pay about 10K. I can understand why so many people go with the lower bid. The pitch was super sales like which in itself was a red flag to me. It seems to me that these companies tend to over focus on their multiple pump sump systems and backup systems. I've learned from you that the sump pump means nothing without the proper trench depth, width, weep holes, pipe, etc. It also explains how a friend of mine had a failed system installed and had to hire someone else to fix it. I thought he must have just had a stroke of bad luck but now I'm thinking it's way, way more common. Again, thank you, thank you, thank you!

First thing I would have done buy some good dirt, make sure the whole basement has fall away from house .Extend discharge of gutters 6 ft from the house depends on grade ,make sure the gutters are maintained that means cut back trees etc.. .YOU must keep your gutters clean!!
Run a dehumidifier in the basement, if that that cheap fix does not work then do what he is doing, only then.
You would be amazed how often it is folks do not have the guttering system right, and proper grade around house, when done right it will fix leaky basements lot of the time .this is a dirty little secret keep quiet shhhh

    • @MrTimoteo01
      @MrTimoteo01 7 ปีที่แล้ว

Exactly right, The gutter system is the first line of defense with basement water intrusion. I have run a gutter and roofing company for 25 years. Proper gutter system 1 to 3k, high end gutter covers, 1 to 3 k, proper grading or add dirt , ???, but that keeps 90% of wet basements dry. most houses 3 to 4k. for gutters and a nose forward surface tension system.

I have a pretty big house, built only 5 years ago. Last fall the finished basement floor got a pool of water. I asked 4 waterproofing companies to give me bids. Each one told me a different story about the source of the water and how it could be treated. And each of them proposed a different method. The quotes ranged from $10,000 to $18,000. In the end I did not use them because I didn't know which one might do an acceptable job. The water issue still exists. The house is in a suburb of Boston. I don't know who will be honest and reliable to do this job.

+DDDrew8 Hey Drew, Your dilemma is exactly the reason I started making videos way back when. At that time, You Tube didn't exist. I made them because nearly every time I went out on an estimate, people would tell me that I was saying one thing and 5 other Companies said something else. I'd say, "well, lets go to the video tape!" I made my videos to educate whenever I went on an estimate. I do have some good news for you, my daughter lives in Braintree, a suburb of Boston also. I intend for her to take over the business some day, most likely, with her husband. He is an Engineer who designs body parts operated by brain cells, damn genius, works at a Hospital. I'm just a ditch digger but there's way more money in ditch digging. I'd love to teach him what we do. Finished basements are no problem. I take them apart and put them back together and have done so for some very high end finished basements. I don"t paint. My office number is 888 808 9523. My assistants name is Janine and if you like we can set something up for the next time I'm up there. I own a Cessna 210 airplane but don't have my pilot license yet. Another 5 or 6 weeks. Been waiting for that before I go up. ( Hate the 6 hr drive. ) Call Janine and perhaps I'll do your job myself. Thanks for your interest. Daniel J OConnor

We recently purchased a 1948 house with block wall and discovered the day after closing water in the basement. We have had several companies give estimate and they all recommend interior drain system. Yes we want to stop the water coming into the house BUT more importantly we want to make sure we don't have foundation issues in the future. Since the interior system still allows water to penetrate into the blocks doesn't that deteriorate the blocks? Also the companies want to install a vapor barrier on the wall. You opinion would be greatly appreciated!!! Thank you
