apparently the reason that gabriel left the band is that the rest of the group were jealous that he was getting all of the attention with his stage persona and outfits- you'd think they would have been eternally grateful as the rest of the band,although brilliant musicians, had all the charisma of a bunch of bank managers- ironically when he left, the band realised that they had to be a bit more entertaining on stage so we had that irritating git phil collins try to fill the void left by gabriel by coming out with his cheeky chappie schtick that was meant as endearing but was just fucking annoyimg
The truth is that Phil Collins on vocals was much better and more versatile than Pete. That is why the band had more worldwide success with Phil without needing Pete's stupid ballads and idiotic masks.
