My Monos carry on in Rose Quartz just got delivered today and I'm DYING to open it! Your reviews helped me decide :)
I do have a funny question, though - how do the Rose Quartz and the Champaign on the hybrid look next to each other?
If I ever buy another checked in sized bag, I'm going with a zipperless hybrid, but I would still like them to look good next to each other 😅
      Have a great day!

I’m leaning towards the monos hybrid (champagne, so regal) even though a wee bit in the heavier side. I’ve never been a fan of zippers. I guess I’m old school 😊
I would like you to do a video like this on personal items. I’m still conflicted 🙄

@jugr1957 with personal items it’s so hard. I don’t even have a favorite. It’s all about the airline and the allowance and the trip and what you’re bringing.
For example, I only fly internationally, so it has to be small, yet I bring camera gear so it has to fit.
So I did the personal item types video at least :)

Great concise reviews. Another thought about why weight is important. If you are a small person, sometimes lifting the bag up in the overhead bin can be a challenge especially if you are height challenged since you have to stand on your tiptoes. The lighter the luggage to start with, the easier it is to lift up. You don't have to go through the lift a leg up on the outside of the seat and lift the bag onto your knee, then do a modified squat and jerk to heft it up the rest of the way.

I love all of your reviews and content and am really happy about the updates! You have truly done an outstanding job! I have purchased 3 July bags and hauled 1 to Bali. I wish I had known that they typically don’t weigh because I purchased a hand held luggage scale and cried about not taking my carry on. So, I just checked my old Delsey carry on (12 years old, soft sided, expandable and well used) as well as my brand new pink July checked bag. She held up beautifully. I’m so sad to hear about the handle on yours- PLEASE keep us posted on the warranty! And I really wish they would send you a trunk! They’re silly not to! Hugs and happy holidays!

Thanks for the awesome video! I bought a Beis carryon last February based on last year’s video and I still love it. I debated a lot between Monos Carry On Plus, and Beis for that purchase. If I had to pick something from this year’s video I would probably go with the Monos Hybrid for myself, and the Heys one (the light one) or Quince for my 13 year old, but we really don’t need anymore carryon luggage as we have two other soft side carryons (Kirkland Signature, and Swiss Gear) that are 10+ years old. My 17 year old prefers soft side luggage so it is probably Travel Pro when she needs a new suitcase. My husband loves the Samsonite Just Right suitcase that I found a little too small (and bought the Beis to replace).

I ended up choosing the monos hybrid based on your recommendation, and I love it! We just came back from a 2 week trip through Ireland and Scotland, and she’s also been through a few weeks of domestic travel. It’s been perfect for my needs and I LOVE the trunk opening. I don’t know if I’d ever go back to a zippered suitcase after this. I have had to check her a couple of times, and shes gotten quite a few scuffs and scratches, but it doesn’t really bother me. I actually bought the Quince 20” suitcase in black after you reviewed it. I took it on a two week trip from FL to Sydney, Australia. I used it as an overhead carry on the way there and checked it the way back. It looked brand new, even after checking it and loved the compression. The wheels glide very smoothly on different surfaces and the handle is very sturdy. My other carry on is an American Tourister soft shell (which I absolutely love, I used it on a 3 week trip to Colombia) but it’s not an internationally sized carry on so I bought the Quince in its place. Now I’m a few days away from taking the Quince on a week long trip to Europe.

I recently purchased the Monos carry on plus which was on sale for $183. I ended up going for the plus because it wouldn't give me trouble with any of the airlines I mostly travel with.
I do have an ItLuggage softside which is compatible with just about any stingy airline anyways, but I fell in love with the Heys Airlight specs and colors and may pick one of those when the lavender color way restocks.

I decided to get the Quince 20" carry on and took it on it's first trip (5 days) this past week. I purchased the beige and I absolutely LOVE it! I had plenty of room for all of my things. It was sturdy and light weight. I had no problems getting it into and out of the overhead on the plane or on the train. The surface was easily cleaned with the included sponge and the wheels were solid on the streets of New York city. No issue at all dragging it over a mile from the station to the hotel. I'm planning to take it, and my new Work Tote in Black Croc from Beis on my trip to Scotland in 2024. I like to pack light and swear by capsule wardrobes. I went with Quince due to cost, but I would totally consider Monos. 🥰

❤ this, finally! I can't wait til you use the quince and review it and let us know how the July warranty works out cause I was really getting excited about it - hopefully the expandable lite doesn't have same handle issues. always loved the monos hybrid especially cause of the latches and quality, only I was worried it wouldn't fit on budget airlines and is heavier. it just looks so classy in the champagne... but I'm curious which you rank better between the 2 HEYS? the Archer interior looks pretty cool too cause if I have bulkier shoes or items on bottom half I don't have to worry about having a whole compression board in the way but still get extra pockets on both sides and a simple buckle in middle to tie down.

The warranty went well- I am receiving a new bag 🥰
As for the heys- I can’t really decide between the two, which is why this video was so hard. If you need lighter weight, the airlite is best. But the inside is preferable in the earth tone, in my opinion.
Hopefully I’ll travel with Quince and the archer this year. I’ll bring my new July on my next trip, most likely.

Thank you for the information! I am looking at the July light expandable family set or they Hey's light. I love how July has a life time warrantee and the material of the bag. However Hey's can fit more. Maybe I'll get the heys light cary on and the rest in the July. But the weight is always interesting to see. I am not much of an international traveler but I want to however, not sure if I would run into the weight problem. As always you killed it. I like the monos brand too, I did see where a TH-camr reviewed it and when it was checked there was indention marks like a fingernail or something that can't be buffed so that made me scared to get the bag.

By the way, this last weekend I pulled off the Frontier hack with Take Off 2.0! Only paid $41.96 for the roundtrip (Hartford to Orlando). And I was blessed on the way back; they asked for volunteers to sit in the emergency row. I of course ran to the the gate agent to get a free upgrade! Those seats are mad comfortable. I travel 6-9 months out of the year internationally. I've used Away for years, then recently Beis expandable and the Solgaard. The solgaard is a gamechanger as it makes packing and settling in great as I just hang up my solgaard closet. The Solgaard is also convenient as I don't have to fiddle with zippers when going thru security - they are snap closures and super convenient. It's also survived beautifully after needing to be checked many times when flying domestic in India or budget Asian carriers when they have strict weight limits for carry-on. They also have great warranty (which AWay used to have but have since taken it away), I also have to take into account packing for both work (I do a lot of speaking at conferences and high level meetings), scuba diving (that's my only check-in if I'm carrying my own gear), and daily casual and adventure needs. So my rollerboard is the Solgaard, my dive duffle is Patagonia packable 55L Blach Hole, my underseat personal item is the Underseat Pro, I have a Ria sling for essentials and a foladable North Face 42 backpack/duffel that I tuck away if I need an extra on the way back home. I also carry a small and large Longchamp Le Pliage tote as they weigh nothing and are good quality use for daily purses when I arrive and need to look professional.

@@ItsTheKellysyou’ll have a blast getting certified in the Maldives. For a beginner, I wouldn’t rush to buy expensive gear without having a few dives under your belt to see what works for you. It’s always a good idea to, if you are bringing anything of your own, to start with your personal gear first. Mask/snorkel (I recommend low profile masks and rollable snorkel to save space), and fins. Then slowly build up your own gear set as you gain more confidence and experience. Good to test out rental gear first during your course. As for me, I do technical diving and sidemount, so my rig is all customized and not really available in more rental shops. So I travel with it. Luckily I usually do 1 month or more at a dive location so don’t have to lug my gear frequently from place to place. In the trips where I do need to city hop for work, but still want to sneak in some dives, I won’t bring my full setup but just my personal gear, dive computer and regulators. That’s always fun going thru security in many countries, such as India, where they have no idea what it is and it gets flagged every time 😂

I am really interested in the July Light or the Light Expandable, but I just realized that there is no side handle. Not sure it would be a deal-breaker, but it seems like a side handle would come in handy in a couple of instances: lifting a bag into the overhead bins or having to carry the bag upstairs (when an escalator or elevator is not available). I know they are trying to keep the weight down, but it doesn't seem like a handle would weigh that much (but I could be wrong).

I think the purple is a glossy finish, which is adorable but not as durable, as you can see on the away in this video.

Darn Quince! I wish they would’ve had the expanding option in August when I bought my Away Flex (I used gift cards from a work rewards program so it cost me $50….so not full price) but I went with Away because of the lifetime guarantee, but had Quince had the flex line then I probably would’ve gone with that. So glad I went with navy vs. coast or white because the navy definitely hides the scratches better.

I am wondering if you have had the chance to see or use the Heys XTRAK 21" CARRY-ON and how you think it might compare to the other Heys bags? I need 5 carry on bags for a trip this summer and we are going to be new at this... how to pack for 2 weeks in a carry on... so I would say packable space is a priority as well as durability. We might check one larger piece to share and throw some extra stuff in if it becomes desperate! I had never heard of Heys until your video (which now has me intrigued plus they are currently having a sale) even though it looks like they have been around for awhile. Great video, Lauren! I’m hoping Monos comes out with an expandable too…in the meantime, I purchased one in Terracotta during the Black Friday sale. Question…I’m curious about returning an item on warranty. Do you keep a few boxes so you could possibly use one to return an item? That would be a lot of boxes for you. I’ve kept a few so far “just in case.” I’m lucky to have space in my basement.

I’d like to get your opinion on choosing an international carry on. I know some airlines have weight limits, and it’s usually the carry on/personal item combined weight.
So I’m trying to decide between purchasing the July carry on light or the regular July carry on.
If I had the carry on light, my hope is that I would still have enough weight allowance to pack full personal item (like a travel backpack). However, then I thought maybe it would make more sense to just have a regular carry on, pack it full, and have a crossbody purse as my personal item. But if packing a regular carry on to the brim is too heavy, I don't want to have wasted weight allowance on the bigger suitcase. do you know what the typical packed weight of a carry on would be? and any advice you would give on picking with that in mind?

    • @ItsTheKellys
      @ItsTheKellys  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

So here’s my take, and from MY experience in 9 years of travel. All airlines say they have a weight limit (I’ve even made a list for you guys showing the limits for 160+ airlines) but out all of my flights to 93 countries and 7 continents for 9 years, I have only ever been weighed ONCE. (Jet star in Australia)
So it is often a worry of mine, including this current trip that I’m on. I even switched to a backpack to better reach my weight limit, and I was never weighed once. (So far)
Most of my bags are within 20-23 pounds when FULLY packed, and that varies based on if it’s a 6-7-8 pound bag.
We will put it this way: a 6 pound bag with my 2 packing cubes was 7kg (the common limit) so it’s ridiculous.
Anyway, the July lite is the lightest, but the weight of the expandable is also the same of quince or heys airlite, and those are larger.
The regular July is wonderful, and the warranty I mentioned worked out perfect, but it is heavier. If you want a July, check out the carry on essential instead.

I’m leaning towards the Monos hybrid carry on because I love the trunk opening rather than zippers. I’m just worried about the weight. Also I like the obsidian color best due to it seeming more neutral and less flashy plus will show less scuffs. BUT I’m guessing the scratching will show more on the obsidian. Especially if the aluminum corners get scratched, right? Silver scratches against the black. The scratches on the champagne probably blend in more, right? Any feedback greatly appreciated! Oh and since it’s being gifted I keep thinking I should ask for the Monos regular zippered medium check and then buy the hybrid carry on later but I will probably get the most use out of a carry on and could live without the check in bag.
