I've watched this a few dozen times and everyone's reactions are priceless. Chris Thile is busting a gut in the background. I still smile every time he hears them joking.
Man, I love how easily Chris just works with their style. Kenneth does a lot of emphasizing the 6th intervals in their chords which really gets them that moody feel. Chris is totally on board with it, and his extra harmony on the chorus was such a joyous sound.
This. At first listen it sounds like Thile is hitting bad notes, but then you see he’s just following these outsider chromatic things Kenneth is doing.
Anyone else notice that this sounds A LOT like gillian welch/dave rawlings? I cant place it exactly, but im hearing Revelator, Everything is Free, and maybe The Way it Will be?
Absolutely, and as good as these guys are it's hard for me to get past it. The guitars sound 100% like Dave and Gillian, and the vocals are very similar too.
Could have sworn I commented this before but: I've fallen absolutely in love with this song after seeing this performance. Though part of me wishes for a third vocal part, instead of Chris doubling the harmony. Still, hard to improve on perfection. EDIT: after several listens I realized that Chris' part is a different harmony, so here I am correcting myself. They did in fact improve on perfection.
Me, too. Chris did a livestream on IG before what turned out to be their final show and played my request, Doubting Thomas, just before going onstage. Will never forget that.
Clouds move over Pontiac skies Their silent thunder matches mine I know this feeling from long ago And I wondered, was it gone? But now I know When she calls, don't send her my way When it hurts, you know it's the right thing Michigan's in the rear view now Keep your hands where I can see 'em You took the words right out of my mouth When you knew that I would need 'em What am I supposed to do now Without you? It's unannounced like you'd expect it Among broke-down breaklines and Motown records And all that's left is a blind reflection But you know what's coming and you regret it When she calls, don't send her my way When it hurt most, it's the right thing Michigan's in the rear view now Keep your hands where I can see 'em You took the words right out of my mouth When you knew that I would need 'em What am I supposed to do now Without you, Without you?
Beautiful beyond description but Mr. Chops on the right spent the whole tune with his back to the audience. I never once saw even a full profile; almost, while he was singing.
Maybe the first time I've ever heard Chris play a couple of wrong notes when he came into solo. Maybe he's feeling guilty for hijacking a Minnesota cultural institution and bringing it solely to New York? Minnesota's in the rear view now..... Wow, how did I find myself feeling bitter towards the otherwise likable Chris Thile?
@@leftcoastgal5134 Ya I absolutely love the evolution of the content, and Chris is an amazing artist. I was spoiled to see it live many times in St Paul so it's pretty upsetting to see a Minnesota institution go to a city that already has an embarrassment of riches in terms of cultural institutions. I'm admittedly bitter.
sublime 🌹
The entire thing is perfect from front to back. The humor, the harmony, everything.
I've watched this a few dozen times and everyone's reactions are priceless. Chris Thile is busting a gut in the background. I still smile every time he hears them joking.
More classic Kenneth wit: "This whole time you've been here you've never played music together?"
-"No....nope..."
-."......is that why I'm here?"

Agreed. You said what I wanted to say (and more).
You can see how much he enjoys playing with them
This. At first listen it sounds like Thile is hitting bad notes, but then you see he’s just following these outsider chromatic things Kenneth is doing.
Yeah, you really notice the 3rd harmony part. Adds an extra brooding beauty to an already amazing song.
Really nice. just a couple of voices and simple instruments yet somehow complete.
Yep, I cried watching that. Still my favorite song by TMCK. We are so blessed to have these talented people performing for us. Thank you.

If you’re gonna write songs and play, you could do worse than to emulate Gillian and David. I feel ya, though.
Hahaha what an interesting observation.
It does somewhat have the Revelator vibe, but it doesn't have the soaring chorus. Just a nice, mellow tune.
It is his picking style. Same as Rawlings.
Not trying to play the melody or even answer it- instead, an embellishment.

They are unbelievable live, always great to see them having a great time.. ♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️
This one still kills.... man I miss this show!
This is pure music at its best. Craftsmen at the highest level. Beautiful voices. Thanks.
Kenneth looks great in glasses..........so does Joey (why isn't he wearing them) ? Two classy talented cuties ! :-)
The fuck are you talking about? Dude in the glasses looks like a troll
My dad and I actually saw them in concert in Michigan (heh heh) and Joey told a joke about breaking his glasses. 😝🤓
the call and response between Chris and Kenneth is truly great.
the last minute was ecstasy in my book :)
I love watching these master craftsmen play. Beautiful song. I need an album.
I miss Live from Here so much.
Me, too. Chris did a livestream on IG before what turned out to be their final show and played my request, Doubting Thomas, just before going onstage. Will never forget that.
I need closed captioning for everything. Hard of hearing. Can someone please give me lyrics? I get it and I hear it but it'd be nice.
Clouds move over Pontiac skies
Their silent thunder matches mine
I know this feeling from long ago
And I wondered, was it gone? But now I know
When she calls, don't send her my way
When it hurts, you know it's the right thing
Michigan's in the rear view now
Keep your hands where I can see 'em
You took the words right out of my mouth
When you knew that I would need 'em
What am I supposed to do now
Without you?
It's unannounced like you'd expect it
Among broke-down breaklines and Motown records
And all that's left is a blind reflection
But you know what's coming and you regret it
When she calls, don't send her my way
When it hurt most, it's the right thing
Michigan's in the rear view now
Keep your hands where I can see 'em
You took the words right out of my mouth
When you knew that I would need 'em
What am I supposed to do now
Without you,
Without you?
Really love what the drums, bass, and accordion add to this. Subtle but powerful.
Modern Simon and Garfunkel
I keep hearing this but I disagree.
If anything I'd say their sound and collaboration is more Cosby, Stills, Nash and Young.... minus 1.
I hear some Everly Brothers in their good sound
Yes, them. But I was thinking more Aztec Two-Step.
That double harmony when Chris comes in...... 👌
Congrats, from Ireland, on a wonderful performance
Love their sound, so smooth
If there is a God, Live From Here will return. It's as simple as that.
Quality ...and we are force fed so much Musical dross on the mainstream waves..
I’m not sure the mainstream can handle the depth.
Holy..... those harmonies
Saw them with Sarah Jarosz at ACL taping... soooooo good!
I simply want to cry... it's that beautiful and haunting.
Beautiful. :')
Just plain awesome music.
Would love a Milk Carton Kids/Thile collaboration album^^
I would die
Holy crap why am I just now seeing this? I wish Chris would join them and become a 3 piece
Golden , Bravo's
Their voices blends so well.........like siblings . These guys are going to be around for a very long time.
Well I don't think that could have been any more perfect.
Understated elegance.

I thought they broke up the milk carton kids? Awesome to see them back together. This duo creates some amazing songs.
After a couple years, they've been quite active in touring with their new album!
Masterpiece
just magical
Fucking hell that is BONKERS 🔥❤️
Beautiful.
Absolutely beautiful 😊❤️🎶😊❤️🎶
This is the music I want to hear when I am dying.
sounds like david rawlings playing style
Simply perfection
I love this concert
Beautiful
Didn't that drummer play with the mars volta?
The fantastic drummer here is Jamie Dick. He also plays for Rhianna Giddens and I think sometimes some other bands too.
Beautiful beyond description but Mr. Chops on the right spent the whole tune with his back to the audience. I never once saw even a full profile; almost, while he was singing.
It was a radio broadcast
@@b43bfd and an actual live show ;)
Bassmangotdbluz No, I don’t think so. The camera on the right side isn’t centered, that’s why you see him on the back
He has to play to the mic? Thinking this is obvious

Hey now... prairie home was sweet for sure, but this show was bound to evolve w/o GK hosting. I love the show Chris has developed.
