      +TBullets It's not really that. Yao had to play overseas in China during every NBA off-season. So he never had the rest that other NBA players got. He also had to play in the Olympics and tried his best to carry a weak Chinese team. And him being Chinese... everyone was a little bit more rough toward him in game.

    Two of the best. Yao was a guy who had finesse for his size, very skilled offensively and had good footwork. Shaq was the incredibly powerfull man who also had finesse for his size, able to move better than anyone close to his size. Such a great matchup.

      @@geegu8432 True correct, but the essence of his posting is still correct: Yao was a fresh NBA player yet made THE BEST NBA center at the time really work hard. That means Yao was legit, proving the skeptics, including me, wrong. I will also say that I was VERY HAPPY for Yao to have proven me wrong that game. Yao is one of my favorite players to watch their old highlights.

    Yao Ming being a couple of inches taller, had an armspan about 2-3 inches shorter than his height. So his height does not actually give him much of an advantage aside from not being as nearly as strong as shaq. Truly skilled center.

      true but his shoulders still start up higher so his standing reach is huge regardless

    • @EGarrett01
      @EGarrett01 6 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      If I recall correctly Yao's standing reach was 9'7", which is huge but about the same as Shaq's. It does help I think that by default his shoulders are higher up so someone else has to jump to stop Yao without Yao having to leave his feet. But of course Shaq was a higher jumper in general, so it was a pretty close match.

    It still makes me sad remembering 2009 when they had already lost T-Mac in the first round, but still destroyed Brandon Roy and the Blazers. Then went on to win game 1 in round 2 against the Lakers... until Yao injured his foot in game 2 and everything was over for the Rockets, and the Lakers went on to become champs. They honestly could've won that year if Yao wasn't injured... considering they would've played against Orlando with Dwight at C. LOL. Dwight's career would've been destroyed.

    I really wished Yao could've played like Dirk. Dirk played in NBA for 21 years, with going to Olympics too, that's largely thanks to his style of play, fade-away or spot up jumper, literally the least physical body contact way to score; and Yao actually did shoot 3s on the Chinese team, but obviously the league at the time was a big men's era and both the league and the Rockets expected him to be a great big man which he did

    being healthy throughout your career is part of the game . this only state that his body is not ready or will never be ready with this kind of league, it just so happen that he is tall enough to showcase his talent but not enough to go that far. retiring at the age of 30 can justify what i mean. but respect to yao and thank you for the memories.

    I did watch that game when it was originally broadcasted. While Shaq did play better overall than Yao, he was very much expected to by EVERYONE. Yao definitely beat expectations by a good margin. WHO, anyone at all, would have expected Yao to block Shaq's first three shots. That had to have frustrated Shaq TREMENDOUSLY, and boosted Yao's confidence TREMENDOUSLY. I am sure Yao felt GREAT after that game. I was quite happy for him.

    Shaq is the most underrated center in NBA history. He was an absolute beast. He'd be my #1 center any day. He's the most dominant big men I have ever seen.

      You never witness or watched WES UNSELD. WILLIS REED. WILT CHAMBERLAIN. MOSES MALONE. BOB LANIER. DARYL DAWKINS. MARK EATON. BILL LAIMBEER. RICK MAHORN. NATE THURMOND. ARTIS GILMORE.WALT BELAMY and other ENFORCER OF A CENTERS way before the 90's.
      SHAQ was lucky that he didn't end up in the 70's and 80's. where REAL STRONGER SMART DEFENSIVE CENTERS Play in that era..

      I'm not saying that SHAQ wasn't great or wasn't a top 3 most dominant centers of all time. All I'm saying is SHAQ wasn't in the era of real DOMINANT CENTERS In the past in which offense was not a priority. But more of a DEFENSE ORIENTED TYPE ERA OF CENTERS back then. Who will play you one on one and can beat his match up with sheer PSYCHOLOGIC state and play you phisical defense throughout. That's not already the type of era in which the 1990's Are. Unlike the 70's and early to mid 1980's..

    This was what everybody was anticipating the moment Yao got drafted everybody was like "Oh man, that guy is bigger than Shaq how is he gonna deal with someone bigger than him." I was especially looking forward to it because as a kid I hated the Lakers, because I thought Shaq was a bully and I was like "Yeah, now we'll see what happens when Shaq tries to pick on someone bigger than him." And Yao did pretty well in his first game against him, blocked his first 3 shots and then Shaq started controlling the game but we ended up winning in the end so I was happy.
