    In short:
    - The Navy and Air Force need to be able to police and patrol the Irish EEZ.
    - The Air Force is in desperate need of a handful of affordable jet-engine fighters. The Italian Leonardo M346FA would be my choice.
    - The Army needs the capability to successfully police and put down any potential counter-insurgency on the island, now and in the future, while also being ready to deploy for UN Peacekeeping Missions when needed.
    - A pay increase across the board would be good.

      What potential insurgence?

    • @Joker-yw9hl

@@micoolkidfilms3270 Brendan O'Leary writes in his new book on potential Irish unification that defence spending will have to be at least 1% to tackle any potential counter-insurgencies, as well as meeting both UN overseas deployments and EU defence obligations. And yes, despite the amendments to the Lisbon Treaty Ireland will still be expected to play a more active role in European security going forward.
I think a small financial boost to the army and the procurement of some light multi-role jet-engine aircraft will go a long way, and are practically all that's needed in short

lol, Ireland does not have any naval or air force powers ffs, they rely on the UK for defence

Ireland needs to spend about €50 billion on it military infrastructure to include an airforce that can project about 500km into the atlantic, naval patrol ships that can engage a destroyer class invading ship, have an armed force that can total about 50,000 personnel.
A yearly budget of about €12 billion minimum and a reservist force that allows every man and women under 50 to be able to volunteer in.

You want to spend close to 10% of our tax receipts on the military while we have a housing crisis that will take another 10 years to fix? And at the same time roll out a national health service???
      Get your head checked

I think radar is pointless without fighter jets, the reason I think this is because if we detect a Russian plane, what will we do “please get out of our airspace”,no we need to be able to impose ourselves

    • @yermanoffthetelly
      @yermanoffthetelly 2 ปีที่แล้ว

Well to be fair the radar(s) always had to come first and €200m is a decent chunk of change to purchase it. No point having interceptors if you can't vector them towards a threat.
I agree though, they should be putting in place a clear plan towards acquiring an air policing capability however modest it may be. Even with full support and funding it would probably take 5-10 years to implement. Look at the metro €250m spent and not a sod turned, won't carry a passenger until 2034 at the earliest. Money isn't the problem in this country, management is (at every level)

Irish military budget is about €1 billion and government expenditure in 2023 will be €100 billion that means it will only be about 1-2% of government budget. That is a truly pathetic figure for a defence budget.
Ireland as an island needs a naval defence force, air force, marine force and so on. It has none of those.

I think they should approach korea on some modern military equipment. Come 22 FA-50s (16 in service/ 6 Trainers) and Two AWACs CN295 plus a primary radar would be the best bet. A TPY-4 or TPY-2 is what they should shoot for and maybe eventually getting 2-3 Israeli SPYDER MR batteries.

Defence is vital it's why we voted Lisbon and lost and then voted again and lost further as the no voters are the only group to prosper from such defence protecting their stolen wealth...the White Ribbon and subsequent paper were similar experiences..only the criminals prospered with peace.

Considering the size off this little island one can not overspend either and I fully support expanding the army but we are still a little country controlling emigration and Ireland for the Irish is more important like affordable accommodation are children are still leaving the country 🇮🇪
