    Hi, I signed up for the personal card, 60k and 30% off flight promotion. If by the of the year, I only get let's say 100k points, I should wait until afterJanuary 1 to spend money on the rest of the required points to get the companion pass that way I get it for as close to 2 calendar years as possible? I would not be losing points or anything if I didn't make the 135k in a calendar year, is that correct??

    • @thebrandonboydshow
      @thebrandonboydshow  ปีที่แล้ว

      You do not lose any points. They are yours. In order to get companion pass you have to accumulate 135k in a calendar year.
      Two things:
      First, if you accumulate the points this year you’ll get companion pass for the remainder of this calendar year and all next calendar year 2024. After that you would have to start over.
      Second, if you don’t get to 135k this calendar year then the points that count toward your companion pass will reset to zero on January 1, 2024. You still have your points, you just won’t be able to use them to go toward companion pass

  • @stefanimyhre378
    @stefanimyhre378 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Do you have to have 135k pts banked to earn the pass? Or does the SW system keep a cumulative tally of pts earned even if you've chosen to use some on a flight? I am guessing these need to be untouched to get the pass, then can spend.

    • @thebrandonboydshow
      @thebrandonboydshow  ปีที่แล้ว

      Great question. Once you earn the 135k in a calendar year you earn companion pass. You can then spend the miles as you wish. You don’t need to maintain a certain balance of miles. They are there for you to use

      I would keep an eye out for elevated offers in November/december. Ideally you would apply end of November into December. Have your first statement close after the new year. That ensures the money you spent in December all posts in 2024 and goes toward the pass.

      Great question. I just didn’t want to add another card. The personal offer I got was for 100k rapid rewards with a higher spend. I only needed 15k more points at the time (requirement used to be 125k in a calendar year. ). I didn’t feel the need to add another huge sign up offer just to bridge that small of a gap I had in points. It was easy to use the shopping portal. Lots of great offers, got to try some new brands, and got use out of everything I tried. Easily got to the 125k.

    Great video! I have an expense of $4000 due on Dec 1st. I signed up for the personal card now with sign up bonus of 75K and business card with bonus of 60K each with minimum spend of $3K. Would it be okay to put $2,000 on each card now and then meet the rest of the minimum spend after Jan 1st? Southwest wouldn't grant me the bonus this year if I did it this way correct? Should I call Southwest to make sure they don't grant the bonus early?Thanks again for the informative, excellent video!

    • @thebrandonboydshow
      @thebrandonboydshow  ปีที่แล้ว

      That’s what I would do. Just don’t come to close with either card until the new year. Give yourself a buffer of at least $500 on each card. Sounds like you’ve got it set up just right!

    Do you have to earn the points within 1 year

    • @thebrandonboydshow
      @thebrandonboydshow  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes. Ideally you want to earn all the points in the first quarter or first half of the year. That way you can enjoy companion pass for the rest of that calendar year and the entire following year. If you finish earning the points during the last few weeks/months of the year then you really don’t get to utilize the pass as long.
      Example: if you earn your required points in November 2023 then you only get to use the companion pass during November and December this year and the rest of 2024.
      If you earn your points in 2024 by March 2024 then you get 9 months left of 2024 and all of 2025. Earning Walt in the year is key.
      I’ll have a video out near the end of the year detailing when to start applying for Southwest cards to earn the bonus at the right time. Hope that helps!

Do you think this is TOO CLOSE? I'm not sure how to gauge that amount. My requirement was $5,000 spend and I have spent $4,100 so far. Should I stop spending on the year? I don't want my points before 2023!!!

I called them before the year ended and the agent told me I was not able to get CP because the 80k bonus points I got for spending X amount does not go towards CP. I'm confused. @@thebrandonboydshow It was easy for us. Our living expenses for me and my wife total $1800 a month. We received the Southwest Business Card on 12/12/22 and started putting our expenses on that card. Expenses like, groceries, restaurants, auto gas, medical deductibles, entertainment, mobile phone, etc. of course we pay it off every month. We received the 80,000 bonus points 2/22/23. We received the Southwest Personal Card in mid Jan 2023. We hit the $1,000 bonus level easily, because we paid for our daughter and son in laws airfare to Spain($1100) and received the 50,000 points also on 2/22/23. It worked perfectly for us. Imagine I was seriously toying with the idea of signing up for a $1500 course on how to get the companion fare. Whew!!

    I just watched your video from last year where you were approved for a southwest card while being over 5/24. Do you think chase is still relaxing on their 5/24 rule?
    I just applied for one of the southwest business cards (i forgot the name haha, but it was the $149/year one). I got the 7-10 business pending decision message, so I went ahead and called reconsideration just assuming I was actually denied. Turns out that was the case, because I was technically at 5/24. (however, one of my 5/24 was a card I was an authorized user on, and I had called about a month or two ago and removed myself as an authorized user with chase since it was a freedom flex that belongs to my wife.)
    So I told them I should actually be at 4/24 because of removing myself as a user on her card, and they said "oh right you are at 4/24" and reprocessed my application. Later that afternoon a chase rep called me and verified that it was actually me applying, and then processed the application right there with me on the phone.
    ----- Now here is the part I'm confused and concerned about. I was at 4/24 and got approved for a southwest *business* card. the rep told me that this would put me *at 5/24*. I even double checked and asked if that was a mistake since chase business cards dont add to your personal 5/24 and they confirmed that it would put me at 5/24.
    Should I just assume this rep was misinformed? EVERYTHING i have read and researched has said that most business cards with few exceptions DO NOT add to 5/24. Now I'm worried that I wont get approved for the personal card which was my plan for in a few weeks before the 75k promo drops.
    Do you think that this rep was just mistaken? IF I do get denied for the personal card, do you recommend I just keep calling the reconsideration line until someone approves me? I have good credit and all that so the 5/24 rule is really my only concern at this point. Especially considering chase relaxing the rule (at least last year) I was really surprised to have been initially denied for a business card when I was technically at 4/24. And to clarify, they straight up told me that was the only reason i was denied, it wasn't due to credit or anything.

    • @thebrandonboydshow
      @thebrandonboydshow  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Great question. Th aka so much for providing this detailed story. Very helpful. Chase business cards are subject to, but don’t count toward 5/24. Your explanation of 5/24 is 100% accurate. When I say the cards are subject to 5/24 I mean that if you are at 5/24 then odds are very strong you will be denied for a Chase business card.
      Last year I was approved when I shouldn’t have been. However, that was a limited time period where many people were experiencing the same strange approvals from chase. I am. Not seeing as many of those now so my confidence level in getting approved in that same situation now would be lower.
      I’m not going to say that the rep is wrong as there may be some sort of internal change going on. However, everything we know about 5/24 is that your assessment is accurate. Business cards don’t count toward 5/24. That includes Chase cards. Please keep me posted as this story develops so we can keep an eye on it. Very interesting.

Question, when I go into my SW app, and settings to see how close I am to earning the companion pass, it says, "companion qualifying points/flights only. Rests January 1st." • @thebrandonboydshow
      @thebrandonboydshow  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Great question. For companion pass everything resets on January 1st. Example, if you earn 100k points (which is short of what’s needed for companion pass), then you would go back to zero on Jan 1st. You get to keep the points you earned. But the progress toward companion pass starts over at zero. That’s why you want to make sure you earn all of your points in one calendar year because it does reset.
