A year or two ago a Glastron popped up on Craigslist Nebraska. $4000. I was soooooo tempted. Then it went off - sold. Then...I saw it two blocks from my house where the new owner lived.

hi i have a 1975 Dodge Woodsman that i think should be added to this list. It was built on a dodge 1 ton frame with a 318 has an automatic trans and is even 4 wheel drive. "now that's cool"

Given that camper vans are expected to regularly traverse muddy fields, I can't believe more of them don't have 4 wheel drive. It's such an obvious thing and would make them even more versatile.

The Commer vans were truly evil to drive - I used them in the late sixties and early seventies. Their nickname was the "Commer Unsteerable" .... and (some of them at least) had the handbrake acting on the front wheels. You definitely did not want to try a handbrake turn.

They were neither produced by hannomag nor by Mercedes, Schäfer used chassis from Hanomag, Hanmoag / Henschel and later Mercedes. Thank you,I liked the GMC motorhome, and the Glastron ..The others arent much good, only good for a overnight sort of thing..When going away in such vehicles,it has been my experience that you need four things most of all..They are a VERY RELIABLE vehicle, first, a shower ,and a toilet, and a bed..cooking is a lower priority..you see ,and try this using your own suburb as a example..Imagine you have driven into your own suburb for the first time as a stranger in a van..it is afternoon soon you will need to eat, wash and sleep..Now,where can we park ourselves discreetly ? Where is a toilet ? even if you find one, most are locked at night to deter vice,is there one in your suburb ? where can you shower.? thats even more difficult..And where can you sleep safely..maybe there is a motel somewhere but..as for food, you can nearly always find something to eat at a fast food outlet, cafe etc..but shower, toilet, and bed are harder to find...next problem.is discretion you need to be able to live on your vehicle without attracting attention from nearby residents, police, council ordinance officers and petty criminals..in this regard the two vehicles have drawbacks as they are a bit too identifiable as motorhomes..

Without a doubt my favorite one of all was number 3 the GMC that was made from 73 to 78 or 79 way ahead of itself the best even today if you can get find one which there's a lot of them still left out there and go through and do a complete restore on it you'll have a better motorhome than any of the newer ones that are being built it was just top-of-the-line back then and still top-of-the-line to this day and I wish I owned one of them I really do.

Interesting choices. Growing up we had a 1964 Ford Travel Wagon on a Ford Econoline chassis with a pop top. It was a great conversion design, but the engine was gutless at 100 horsepower and 10 mpg. It commonly overheated and was a nuisance because the engine access was between the driver and passenger seats in the front. Had many lifetime travel adventures in it despite these serious flaws.

Sadly, they've missed the best motorhome, Revcon (early, '1971-77). Designed by the stepson of Wally Byam (Airstream), it was revolutionary for the times and it was the impetus for GM to build THEIR motorhome. Low entry, light weight, great gas mileage. We get an average 3 thumbs up every day we're travelling in 'Rosebud'. (More if we're towing our '58 Metropolitan).

1:05, my God, even a minor crash looks like it would be frightening. Anything more than a fender bender and it becomes a leg bender (or breaker). End up being named shorty.

All the VW vans are like that, same as the 1st gen big-3 American vans. The average American car bumpers in the 60's and early 70's were higher and would go over the VW bumper right into your legs in a head-on collision. Federal crash safety regulations put an end to them but you still see this "cabover" configuration in some larger box-trucks from overseas because larger trucks still don't have to meet car safety rules.

The Commer campers were only fitted with 1500 or 1724cc petrol or a four cylinder diesel. The TS3 (knocker) 3 cylinder 2 stroke diesels were fitted in bigger trucks or wagons.

Nice video, at 6.25, I recognize this Chinook, this has been driving around in Enschede Netherlands for years, and still, as a mobile changing studio of a kind of "Dame Edna" artist, on the backside a small folding stage is possible, I unfortunately forgot her / his name but there are videos on it TH-cam available.

Yep. 6 pistons in 3 cylinders. Look up "Commer Knocker" and you'll see one of the craziest engines to ever make it into production. They have a unique sound when running, hence the "Knocker" name.

Effectively a 6 cylinder with 3 combustion chambers, with supercharger too. Used for commercial vehicles only, one bus company ran coaches with them. At at time when the average family car got 80 mph at best, these coaches were getting 70mph loaded.
