That poor , gorgeous little Herald physically starts to shake on it wheels when you go near it. It is terrified of you Alex, show it a little love.🥰🥰🥰 ...
Hi Alex, well done you...the Herald is now running as near sweet as it can on the move, I wouldn't worry to much about the idle being "farty" as my mate George's one is the same and he's been a mechanic all his working life. Remi looked well pleased, hope he treated you for all your hard work. Take care, Jon B. 🤓
Hi Alex, When it was in the drive, it sounded as if it was running RICH, and "Hunting", which usually means a blockage of some sort in the Carb ! Probably some little bits from Dirty fuel ! I think Disassembly and Reassembly is in order, with a good clean to boot ! OR Blast it down the Motorway ! ! ! Stay tinkering ! Stu xx {1960 Rover P4 100, 50 years in my ownership last month }
Have you checked the fuel pressure? If it's had a replacement fuel pump these can generate excess pressure which is too much for the carb needle valve and causes flooding/over rich running at idle which you can't adjust out at the carb.
Great to see a Herald estate again, you don't by per cahance have a loose/worn timing chain thats allowing the timing (ignition and valve) to "flutter" at idle as theres no load or speed in these components?
Alex the top of that carb is in the wrong position you need to take out the 4 screws and turn the top clockwise to the next position and have you centralised the jet the needle won't go down properly if you haven't
I’d have washed through the fuel side of the carb with brake cleaner, gone back to base settings for points and plug gap, timing and mixture settings, wash out the existing oil in the dashpot on the carb and replace it with 3 in 1 oil. If it still coughs and farts at idle after that, the two most likely causes are a burnt valve or a vacuum leak somewhere. There is a lot of legs in your theory about the engine recovering from bore wash too…..
@ kinda thought you would have been thorough with all that lot on my list…just an old fart rattling out the usual suspects/ obvious/ basics (delete as appropriate! 😆) in case there was something silly that had been missed (we’ve all done it at some point!) The trick with 3 in 1 was something an old mechanic suggested to me decades ago. Still provides adequate damping but is thinner and allows a more crisp response for the slide & needle as the vacuum varies during normal throttle operation Great effort in getting it all together and running sweeter than it has in a while too! 👏👏
@@Alexsassets sounds like the spark is erratic on tick over, try hooking up the timing light and watch the flash for consistency it should show if the spark is regular or not .
@@Alexsassets Also a good idea to check that the advance/retard mechanism is working properly, Rotor should spring back quickly if you twist it a few degrees until it stops. Let go and it should spring back. If it doesn't spring back you will have the engine trying to tick over on much too much advance. The holes in the weights get worn the springs get weak and it can all rust up in there. You have a weak spring and a strong spring The weak spring takes the timing from basic to about 15º and then the stronger one controls it up to about 40º. I think it is possible to put the springs on the opposite positions. With poor modern fuel a few degrees of extra retard is often a good thing. Remember that 1º of turn at the dizzy is 2º of timing so it is a fussy adjustment unless you have an adjuster screw like on Morris Minors.
Got a feeling your head gasket has gone causing your crap running, as soon as you started the engine it pissed out water from your radiator cap , the cooling system is pressurising.
Hope you find it then, maybe the idle jet in the carb needs changing but I'm sure you'll find it Alex. Love the channel and hope you're taking care of that back of yours.
Remi's MG needs work or it might fail its MOT Alex I hear the brakes hitting the disks while driving past, meaning a stuck brake caliber. I hear that all the time whilst walking, so many ignore brake issues. Hoping the Herald gets sorted, it will, in time !
@Alexsassets Very good! I hear scraping like that often; people where I live maintain their vehicles poorly. As you know, left untreated causes damage to the front brakes, causing more issues and more money to repair. The Herald sounds good, so hopefully you will get the running problem sorted. Great job as always Alex!

That still isn't very good is it but still a improvement at least I did a little research Alex and found the same Triumph 1296 engine was fitted in the triumph Toledo with a Single HS4 SU carb, I would just buy a cheap HS4 off ebay and then buy a rebuild kit to make the spec for the engine, unless you can find a Toledo one second hand If you wanna look into it the tag number is AUD 392
I thought previously it was an electrical problem and still think its electrical not fuel - you have done a lot of work on the fueling side and its not really had any effect on the basic issue- I can hear it mis firing under acceleration, idle and cruising although audio can be mis leading sometimes. I would think its not valves at this stage as that's even more work to undertake? 12 volt coil with a ballast resistor loom intended for a 9 volt coil ??? dodgy wires that look o.k.? just thinking outside the box, not trying to be a know-all
All electrical ignition stuff has been changed twice to eliminate. New plugs. Leads. Coil. Points and condenser and then swap to electronic ignition. Second hand distributor. New Low tension wires from coil to dizzy. Small earth inside dizzy replaced. New cap. New rotorarm. Timing checked twice. Compression test passed. Pretty much tried everything 🤣
The herald needs a name , what will you call it ?😂. I can see simin driving Jessie but first he needs a bowler hat, I could see him now in a bowler hat . Nice to see the triumph slowly getting better , it dies deserve to after all it did get you back from Wales .
@Alexsassets well simon being quirky, should purchase a bowler hat it will look good on him and suit the car , im looking forward to seeing simon and more importantly Norman driving your lovely p4. Can cars be haunted 👻? 🤣.
Well done Alex, the triumphant battle with the triumph is nearly over. It is starting to see things your way.. lol.

Great work Alex! Good to see it running better and hope it continues 🙂
Nice work Alex. Giving the Herald some love is a good thing. Although it’s a pain in the arse! 😁

Hi thanks. Carb already been apart and cleaned out with cleaner and air line. Also have swapped with abother owners carb and made no difference.
Have you checked the fuel pressure? If it's had a replacement fuel pump these can generate excess pressure which is too much for the carb needle valve and causes flooding/over rich running at idle which you can't adjust out at the carb.
It looks like an original old pump. It doesn't seem to be excessively pressurised
Hi Alex you say it makes you depressed, that will be the constant depression carb! Lol.
I’ve had a few 1360s and actually liked them
It's vital to get the timing bang on & make sure it's advancing before you do any carburation adjustments
All correct and tweaked
Great to see a Herald estate again, you don't by per cahance have a loose/worn timing chain thats allowing the timing (ignition and valve) to "flutter" at idle as theres no load or speed in these components?
I don't think so. It doesn't sound like it to me. My P6 had a rattly timing chain but ran sweet and smooth
Getting there alex😊
Alex the top of that carb is in the wrong position you need to take out the 4 screws and turn the top clockwise to the next position and have you centralised the jet the needle won't go down properly if you haven't
Jet is centralised. Not sure what you mean about the position of lid.
👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Excellent as usual
Was gonna add maybe timing? But I don't know 😅 well done thou 👌🏼
Already tried tweaking

All above done apart from correct oil used in dashpot, not 3 in 1 .

I would love that little Triumph? But would be scared of the price?..
It would be over 2k
12:31 love that sound
i have seen a car with similar problems it was the condenser, i would try changing it and also check that the points gap hasn't closed up .
I have changed from points to electronic ignition and runs the same

Try redex that might help?

@@Stickman_Matt I two own a blue estate as you may know a bit more modern than the herald , love the herald it's full of character .
@@dreammaker730 you should get Alex to feature yours on her channel 🤔
Just a thought have you checked the distributor drive cog for wear .if that's warn you will never get the timing to balance out.
I've tried two different dizzys
Nice big end rattle until oil got round 😱🤦🏻🤠
Just a thought have you give it a compression test Low on low revs 🤠
Yes 170 across all 4cyls
@@Alexsassets that ideas out of the window 😂🤠

😆😆 thing makes me shudder

No premature pressurising. Water was being flung about from my bad filling. Compression test passed 170 across all 4 so doubtful headgasket issues....
Hi Alex, have you tried a condenser swap?
I have swapped from points to electronic ignition and is the same
Hope you find it then, maybe the idle jet in the carb needs changing but I'm sure you'll find it Alex. Love the channel and hope you're taking care of that back of yours.
It's magic. PUN vanishes into thin air at 13:11
You'll never totally get rid of oil burning as the Herald was never fitted with oil valve stem seals from new.
Blimey, I never knew that, I wonder if the Spitfires had that problem as well? The one I had would smell oily sometimes, but it generally ran ok.

It's been sat on the drive for months so has rust on disks. He was cleaning rust off by touching brakes whilst driving

You just need a winch mounted to the back wall of the garage, then they would just need to roll....
