  • Journalist and Salon.com founder David Talbot interviewed by Readara.com on his book The Devil's Chessboard: Allen Dulles, the CIA, and the Rise of America's Secret Government (published by Harper Perennial)
Allen Welch Dulles, the distinguished Wall Street lawyer and son of a prominent family, rose to the helm of the Central Intelligence Agency at a very young age.
With the help of John Foster Dulles, Secretary of State and Allen Dulles’ brother, the longest-serving chief of the CIA molded the secretive organization in a way that often led to secret wars, overthrowing of foreign governments and occasional spying on its own people, all with the support of the U.S. Congress and mostly behind the backs of three presidents.
David Talbot, nonfiction book author and founder of the San Francisco-based web magazine Salon, combs through various government archives and draws from numerous first-hand interviews and sources to build a vivid portrayal of Dulles and the CIA under his leadership.
AUTHOR BIOGRAPHY: David Talbot is the author of the New York Times bestseller Brothers: The Hidden History of the Kennedy Years and the acclaimed national bestseller Season of the Witch: Enchantment, Terror, and Deliverance in the City of Love. He is the founder and former editor in chief of Salon, and was a senior editor at Mother Jones and the features editor at the San Francisco Examiner. He has written for The New Yorker, Rolling Stone, Time, The Guardian, and other major publications. Talbot lives in San Francisco, California.

Never announce you are going to destroy evil. Just set about doing it

    • @philmessina476

That kind of makes sense. But, then, you're talking about clandestine vigilanteism, perhaps. If we're talking about evil institutions, however. Then, vigilanteism doesn't make so much sense. In terms of transforming institutions, we're talking about also transforming a corporate culture or an institutional culture or a government culture.
For example, if the head of the CIA is replaced, or a more recent example, if the head of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), Anthony Fauci, is removed from power, the culture, which elevated him will simply elevate a replacement into that position of power. And evil covert actions, like coups d’état or gain of function bioweapons research will continue.
It seems what has to happen is collective struggle has to speak out and expose corruption and persuade a growing number of people about the evils being committed as well as the need for transformative change. (cf. speaking out to break the trance or hypnosis of mass formation, The Psychology of Totalitarianism by Prof. Mattias Desmet)
Then, perhaps, there might be a sea change. And, then, removing villains from positions of power will be effective because, if there has been a cultural shift, then the political changes can be lasting and sustained.
But that would require speaking out openly and publicly to help break people out of the grips of fear-based decision-making, to help people break out of mass formation hypnosis or denial.
Does that make sense? What do you think of this perspective?

JFK hung himself. He was having extramarital affairs and J Edgar Hoover had the goods on him. Lyndon Johnson got wind of it and blackmailed Kennedy into making Johnson his running mate. That was his first mistake. Not going along with the bay of pigs fiasco was his second. His third and last big mistake was saying publicly that he intended to break the CIA into a thousand pieces. Somewhere in there is his refusal to go into south east Asia which had the military industrial complex in a tizzy... The question is therefore not who wanted Kennedy dead, but who didn't want Kennedy dead?

The Devil's Chessboard is a phenomenal book that opened my eyes to the true recent history of the United States. I was appalled and saddened at the same time. No longer am I that innocent citizen accepting U.S. history at face value. I mourn for my father and uncles, all veterans of WWII. I mourn for the veterans of the Viet Nam Conflict. I mourn for the veterans of the Korean Conflict, the veterans of Desert Storm and The Gulf War. I mourn for the lost of the United States of America that our Founding Fathers envisioned and sacrificed so much so that the U.S. remained independent of foreign powers. When shown a copy of the Warren Commission, a gentleman who was a foreign head of state scroll down to the list of members of the Warren Commission> When he saw Allen Dulles' name, the gentleman pushed back the copy of the report and stated that the report is a "white wash." Allen Dulles was a very evil man. But there were others as well.

A good next book would be Georgetown Professor and Bill Clinton’s mentor Carrol Quigleys infamous “Tragedy and Hope” and “The Anglo American establishment” both books are essentially about how a secret society formed by Cecil Rhodes is who created the round table groups that control modern society especially geopolitics like the Royal Institute for international affairs and the Council on Forged Relations in the US that are the actual drivers of international policy, and the most famous quote would be from tragedy and hope where he talks about the Round Table group being the real drivers of “the conspiracy to subvert the American way of life” and he laughs that people think it’s a commie plot from Moscow and says they’ll never figure it out because it’s the wealthiest monopoly capitalist from the west that actually funded the communists in the first place

If people running things really were stupid, they would occasionally make mistakes that are beneficial to the country. This one way flow of traffic, that I'm gonna bluntly measure by how happy people are, is in free fall. David Talbot is a great author. If you wanna know more about Allen Dulles, Constitutional Law Attorney Daniel Sheehan is well versed on Dulles. Talbot's main focus on the Dulles brothers is from the beginning of CI, during the Eisenhower Administration, those two go way back.
With that said, it leaves me a tad puzzled that more folks here in the states don't know what Allen was involved in. Going all the way back to 1919, Allen Dulles played a large part in the drafting the Treaty of Versailles, he was very instrumental in setting up the reparation payments of over 130 Billion Gold Marks which Germany agreed to pay to all the businesses that were damaged, ruined or put out of business as a result of WW1.
Allen Dulles was also the one that okayed Adolf Hitler to become the Chancellor of Germany in the 1930's.

Reading thru most of these comments I notice not one mention of James Douglas's work on this exact same theme, "JFK and the Unspeakable." Published in 2008, it tells the same story from a slightly different angle than Talbot's, but establishes beyond dispute that Dulles and a small team of CIA operatives orchestrated the whole assassination, with Oswald as carefully managed scapegoat, who did play a minor role but was almost entirely in the dark about the hit itself. Douglas and Talbot have the goods on the most evil bunch who've ever existed, the CIA, as well as co-conspirator Hoover at FBI. Of course, none of these bastards will ever be held accountable. Totalitarian USA marches on, wrecking the world for Wall St. and global capitalism!

We look forward to you explaining how the people framing "scapegoat" Oswald knew:
      - he would show up unexpectedly at the Paine house Nov. 21 otherwise they can't pretend he smuggled the rifle
      - nobody would ever find any bullets or fragments that don't match to his rifle
      - he would immediately flee the plaza
      - he had a gun in Oak Cliff and would obtain it
      - an imposter who looks so much like him he's guaranteed to fool the nearly dozen witnesses who ID Oswald needs to be hanging around 10th and Patton
      - Officer Tippit won't simply outdraw and capture his attacker
      - Oswald will agree to help frame himself by trying to shoot a second cop and fighting like a maniac
      - Oswald will lie to police and refuse to cooperate
      - Oswald, addressing the entire world on live TV, will not make the slightest attempt to blurt out anything about any conspiracy and will instead just shrug a hollow, rambling reply that all but dodges the question when asked, "Did you shoot the President?"
      - they can safely count on scores of witnesses, ballistics experts, police, FBI, Secret Service, military personnel, doctors, photographers, x-ray technicians, Oswald family members, journalists, whole commissions, etc., to obey illegal orders to commit crimes and make themselves all eternally loyal accessories to murder and treason...

      - recoil in bug-eyed shock? No.
      - exclaim an appalled, "What are you, nuts? Of course not!" No.
      - beg protection for his family from this sinister gang of villains framing him? No.

Bush asked them if he could bring an 'administative' person to work on this, which he was given permission. Colby was, or developed, into a psychopath: he thought everyone was either stealing money or drsgs off of him, and he killed THOUSANDS of those working on this funding program (pilos, distributors, venfors, drug and money mules, et al). From what I understand, he was 'talked to by the others constantly to keep him from killing more people.

He would be using the Chernobyl 'accident' to take the spotlight off of Reagan's disregard for the lives of the astronauts for the PR event of his speaking to them in his SOTU that evening.

I would imagine that Congress would exclude the 'Director of the C.I.A from charing the JFK investigatory commission, therefore strategy required Dulles to publicly stand down. Without a conflict of interest to hinder his appointment, ex-director Dulles is of course selected to head the Warren Commission. His secretly (yet openly) continuing to direct CIA operations from his home hopefully proves that the whole affair was carefully choreographed and known to an exclusive few, including the President.
