How GE Was Ruined by Greed, Hubris and Pliant Board Members
Author and business journalist William D. Cohan on his book Power Failure: The Rise and Fall of an American Icon in an interview for Readara.com
General Electric was once known for its innovative products and engineering excellence, and the industrial company was one of the pillars of the US economy.
However, in the last two decades the industrial leader lost its luster and flirted with bankruptcy filing during the subprime crisis - something that was once unthinkable. Having held the largest market cap on the New York Stock Exchange, General Electric drifted from industrial engineering to financial engineering. How the company came to please shareholders at all costs is a story that must be discussed in all corporate boardrooms and management schools.
GE’s corporate leadership traded short-term profits for long-term pains, skimped on research and development but lavished capital on its financial division, all with the blessing of a toothless board of directors made up of who’s who of corporate America.
Once admired for its industrial prowess and engineering heft for most of its 13-decade existence, GE is now just another struggling engineering company.

COHAN, a former senior Wall Street M&A investment banker for 17 years at Lazard Frères & Co., Merrill Lynch and JPMorganChase, is the New York Times bestselling author of three non-fiction narratives about Wall Street: Money and Power: How Goldman Sachs Came to Rule the World; House of Cards: A Tale of Hubris and Wretched Excess on Wall Street; and, The Last Tycoons: The Secret History of Lazard Frères & Co., the winner of the 2007 FT/Goldman Sachs Business Book of the Year Award. His 2014 book, The Price of Silence, about the Duke lacrosse scandal was also a New York Times bestseller. I seen an episode of "You Bet Your Life" with Groucho Marx and John Paul Stapp was a contestant. He looked so unassuming I had to learn more. Watched what videos were available and found Craig Ryans book. After all of this when his name comes to mind the word "Undaunted" is added to his name.

Allen Dulles did plot Kennedy's assassination, but there were 3 Kennedy assassinations, the British Killed Joseph Kennedy Jr. when they rigged his B-24 Bomber to explode on operation Aphrodite, in retaliation for Kennedy Sr. support of Hitler and the Germans during his time as ambassador to England.

Talbot's book should be required reading for anyone who wants to know the truth about America's foreign policy since WW2 (and even a bit during the end of WW2) and how the media was increasingly compromised (via Operation Mockingbird) from the early 1950s and how their radical world view began to bleed into domestic policy as well. The name of Dulles should go down...in IMFAMY.

Thanks for sharing. One of my ancestors, William Voyles, fought under Francis Marion during the revolution. He was captured in Camden but escaped and went on to fight at Kings Mountain and Cowpens. Voyles was rewarded for his service with a land grant in Cabarrus County. William executed a land grant on the west side of Big Coldwater Creek on March 6, 1779 for 150 acres (61 ha).

The U2 incident cost the CIA a chance for much better information. Eisenhower was going to visit the USSR. Since Air Force One was going to be the only western aircraft allowed in Soviet airspace and was going to fly at a far lower altitude the CIA fitted it with covert cameras. The controls for the cameras were disguised as the pilot's air vent controls so even if the Soviets had an official in the cockpit jump seat they wouldn't have noticed. But the U2 incident caused Khrushchev to cancel the trip. Bummer.

For the CIA, the FBI, and the security detail that protected JFK, to admit that a lone, derranged, communist inclined individual defeated all of them in their duty to protect the President, lojand assassinated the president of the United States all by himself, they must have been under enormous pressure, and its extremely curious that no one ever held them to account for their espectacular failure. The whole country accepted it and carried on... Strange, very strange.

It's sad to think that a few demented men could wield the kind of power that Dulles and his cronies did. But fortunately, I don't think that kind of system is in place anymore. Nixon's attempt to use the government for his own purposes was exposed and Trump's attempt to overthrow an election was also thwarted. You can malign the media all you want but a free press is the only way to expose the corrupt intentions of those in power.
