News changes so quickly. We started the video yesterday afternoon and since then:
- The the main left-wing parties, Marine Tondelier (Greens), Olivier Faure (Socialists), Fabien Roussel (Communists), and Manuel Bompard (La France Insoumise, LFI) announce a coalition for the French election,
- The Republicans want to form an alliance with Le Pen's National Rally.

Another reason besides this excellent explanation might be Macrons habit of "being presidential". Macron certainly has his weaknesses as a politician, but one of his strenghts is that he never shies away from a presidential speech right into the camera which makes him look good when there is a problem. So by doing this he can also portray this as a "national emergency" scaring potential voters away from the far right. It seems very well thought through.

From observing recent EU election, an observer could conclude that the rightward shift will propagate, and Ursula's chances are better now than they would be in the future. So while this may seem like a risk for Macron now, he sees his odds only worsening.
it depends. I think its pretty likely that the conditions on the ground that are frustrating so many people are not going to be substantially amended by the new parties. People will be very sick of the very quickly. Especially the french, whose natural state it seems is political upheaval.

Parliement was elected 2 years ago to govern France, but they didn't manage to get any sort of compromise. Given the financial situation of the country, it's not gonna be easy for the next government, even with an absolute majority.
So now, everyone has to show their hand right from the start, and tell who they plan to govern with.

Yes, it is leading toward a return of democracy in France. Usually, we had left and right fighting for power. With Macron, all the reasonable people went to the center, leading to a TINA blockade. So it was no longer possible to gain popular support since all popular related issues were relagated to the edge of the assembly. Not the wisest choice, a sort of lasyness of rule makers. This could not last forever. It is exploding right now. This is unfortunately the consequence of Euro. We are used to have a weak money. We did borrow vast amount of money within a strong currency bloc. At our detriment. We must go in another direction now. The one with savings 😉

One thing that is important to note is that France legislative election are not proportional. The country is split into constituency of 1 seat, and it's a two turn system keeping only the two candidates with the most vote for the second turn.
This lead to a lot of situations where the party with the popular vote loose the election (similar to the US election but everywhere all at once).
That sounds better than first past the vote. This way if 2-3 parties with similar priorities are splitting a vote vs a unified party with different priorities, the split votes can be unified for the 2nd pass.
@@eggmcmartyI would agree for a presidential election, where everyone vote for one candidate. But it turns out it's way worse, because most of the time it's : the left/right split the vote, don't get past the fist turn, so the center is elected. And repeat for every single constituency.
It was like that for years, but it backfired for Macron recently, as people are voting "anything but Macron" because they don't feel represented at all.
If it was proportional at a national level, it would be way better : you get 30% of the vote ? You get 30% of the 577 seats.

If the right and left don't have enough support to make it past the 1st round then it makes sense that a centrist party might make it further, and avoids radical change when the population is clearly divided (as they couldn't make it past the first round)
More importantly if it's proportional to the national vote, how do you chose which representatives get the seats?? People should be able to vote in representatives from THEIR local area that represent THEM. In an ideal world, this would matter, but realistically in most places these representatives will just vote along party lines, even if not what the constituents would want.
@@sol_in.victus The thing is the parlement doesn't really represent local collectivities. I would say like 95+% of people don't know their candidate other than "it's the party X candidate". It's not really their job to be honest.
For local representation, we already have the senate which is a second legislative chamber from people who cooperate with the first.
While I share the sentiment about the lack of representation, it's also very present in the population. Abstention is growing at almost every election except the europeans. People think their vote doesn't matter, as it's rigged toward the establishement and crushing minorities.

The issues and stake of this snap are way bigger than you think. There's a whole strategy behind it that can't be explained in a message and especially can't be understood by someone who doesn't live in France.
There is a tactical sense, egocentrism and panic behind the French president's strategy. Having said that, I am not sure that the French forgive him for his choice to add chaos to the ambient chaos one month before the Olympic Games. He could have waited until the political start in September.
Relying on the fear of the "far right" was not going to work forever. In fact, Le Pen is becoming the new center.

Well, there is a third one: opposition wins now, rule for 3 years AND wins the presidential election in 3 years, which means 5 more years of dumb racists guys. Don't forget there was someone who thought exactly like that (i.e. giving power to the populist opposition hoping for them to fuck up and come back better), it was chancelor Hindenburg in 1933.
It's a pretty crazy risk, and benefits are really scarce in those situations...
Usually dissolving a parliament isn't taken likely by the population. High chance this backfires I believe or it will net way less than he expected. Interesting move either way..

It doesn't work at all well for whoever dissolves the parliament. Ask Chirac how well it went back then. Macron is doing the same, except he certainly EXPECTS AND HOPES to lose so the far right can be in charge....and his term ends, whatever bad happens, he'll blame on the far right rather than HIS disastrous decisions since 2017. Les Republicains centre-right? WTF Ciotti (LR party president) was always describe by his peers as being "one step away from the far right" (and would sometimes be on the verge of being kicked out of the party for it). The party itself was always a conservative one, not center-right liberals at all. The party is part of the EPP for historic reasons but ever since the first election of Macron, the party as shifted more and more to the right with each years and each lost election.
And La France Insoumise being left is also giving them credits they are way more from the far-left, it is just that moderate left-lining people voted for them when the socialist party fell.
And Reconquête is only right wing according to EU parties while they are considered more right than le Rassemblement National.

Calling in elections even if he loses might also be good for him. The ruling party almost never gains more popularity, running a country is not easy and when the results come in and most of what was promised is not delivered, support is lost. Macron might be counting on people electing the right, in hopes that they fail at running the show, while quietly he's gonna be making it harder from his seat. Then during the presidential election he's gonna run on a campaign of "don't let them have all the power, look what they have done with only half"

Not surprised when the french social democrats lost their own spine. It is sad that our old classic social democratic parties all died during the early 2000s. Of course there is a far left. The "La France Insoumise" party (LFI) is largely trotskyist-influenced, and some minor parties that didn't make the cut to elect representatives at the European parliament are openly trotskyist: NPA (new anticapitalist party) and LO (lutte ouvrière). When LFI was allied with the Greens and the socialist party under the NUPES umbrella (at the 2022 parliamentary elections), it was OK to present NUPES as "the left," but IMHO LFI on its own is far left.
As a french, i'm pretty sure he choose to have this new vote in order to win the absolute majority in the Parliament. I bet he was aiming for people to have to choose between him and ''the others'', the others being unacceptable choices in his rethoric.
But he has completely destroyed the principle of alternance and left/right in politics during his 7y as a president. My reasoning ( although I have to admit that I do not make that much sense of any other of Macron's actions either ) is that he believes that things are in fact only going to go from bad to worse. Taking into account what has transpired in both Italy and Netherlands and for that matter Germany as well, he must surely have for seen this possibility.
In politics, the more things change, the more nothing really changes, regardless of who is in power because of political realities that limit what they can and can't do.
With that said, I do wonder if Macron might want to either spook the French people to vote for him or maybe he wants Le Pen to win because of that political reality, after all, it's easy to promise the earth on the sidelines, but once in power and reality kicks in, it's another ball game, and basically, you only have to look at the UK with Brexit to see that, a lot of talk and promises were made but very few were kept.
Macron might be banking on that if Le Pen wins, it could expose the flaws of the party as times goes by and things don't turn out how the French wanted, in other words, Le Pen will have a short window of one or two terms and the French will expect solid results that benefit the people, if they don't see that or if Le Pen starts to create too many waves that are not in France's interest, it could damage there reputation a lot and maybe even make the party unelectable in the future.
I have a feel why so many of the far right parties tone down their policies if they get close or in power, because they likely know they've got one or two chances to prove themselves, mess that up and I doubt the voters will be so forgiven, especially considering that a lot of voters are voting for them out of a protest vote over the mainstream parties, there's a lot of anger around, but now if Le Pen wins, voters will expect results and solid results within the first two-year term, otherwise they could very quickly turn on her, basically, once in power, there's no more excuses and they'll have to do policies based on the realities the country is in, not on wishy-washy talk that anyone can say on the sidelines.
As for the European elections, the right did well, but overall, it looks like not much changed overall in the balance of power, with the surprise being how well the EPP did, basically, I don't think much changed, maybe a tougher response of migration and more compromises being done on policies to get things through, but overall, I don't think the far right gained enough to change much, even assuming they actually all work together which is unlikely.

I'm an American I really don't understand this parliamentary stuff. Here elections are every 2 years or 6 for congress so the idea of a snap election seems like cheating.
MLP’s parti has been preparing itself for such elections for months now hence they are ready with xterm discipline, number of staff and financing. Macron’s bet is very daring yet nationally in the past there’s always been a reluctance from French voters to give LP a chance. Will it be the same now? Macron’s bet is tense.

Politics is not all tactics, as the video suggests. If one believes that excessive public debt, shortfall of profitable investment, growing budget transfers and less trade, disintegrating minorities and weak military have been the main problems of our times, then Macron has not much done to mitigate them. If France fell into a sort of Kaczinski - Fico - Orban trap, Europe could further turn away from the internal market and be downgraded to a cash dispenser for populist countries.

As a young French Macron's supporter, I am convinced that the 2nd theory is the one that Macron has in mind. The National Rally are almost sure to win the legislative elections, but they are really not known to have a viable economic vision (quite the contrary, actually, according to most economists). We can add to that their "weak" ecological plan, and their euroscepticism, while most french people are europhiles. All of that convinces me, and probably Macron, that by gaining power, the National Rally will quickly lose popular support, which will prevent them to win the 2027 presidential election. I have had this idea in mind for some time, but I didn't think Macron would have "the balls" to dissolve the assembly. I'm glad he did!
The dissolution of the Assemblée Nationale was inevitable but the timing is really bad.
Whether he accepts it or not, the president is directly responsible for the progress of the RN.
I've read both RN and the left coalition wants to abolish many of Macron's economic reforms, such as the pension reform. Will they have to cooperate then? And would their respective voters like that?
@@diegoyuiop There has been sources, in the last few days, that indicate that Bardella (RN) might actually not abolish Macron's pension reform, but if he did want to abolish it, it would probably depend on the parliament that will get elected. I don't think the RN would have a problem on cooperating with the left for this specific change, but the left might be more sceptic about it.

Beaucoup votent pour ce parti à cause d'un ras-le-bol de l'immigration incontrôlée, mais sans être nécessairement europhobe ou contre la construction / l'intégration européenne. Je pense que sur le fond du programme, un parti à la fois europhile et favorable à une forte limitation de l'immigration pourrait devenir assez populaire. C'est la place que LR essayait de remplir pour les elections européennes en tout cas.
