I love the ideas for the renovations to the van that will allow Sherpa to be "part of the journey" again! He won't be alone in the back anymore, and that's awesome!

The idea is nice. But how do you get Sherpa to get up there? The obvious solution IMHO would be to put in a ramp so he just have to walk up the ramp (no steps). But he doesn’t want to use a ramp. At least I haven’t seen him using one. ❤

It’s a good thing you saw the gaps in the summerhouse. There is no telling what could get in. Not only the birdies but other things as well. They are also potential weak spots. Great idea filling them in.👍😊

I think its a good idea because like you've said it makes it Sherps toad trips as well as yours, it also makes it more fun for Sherps because he's back seat driving again plus giving you directions as well. I think the ideas of changing out the seats & taking out the cushion behind the seats are great ideas! That will give Sherpa a lot more access to you & he'll feel more included with you on the trips.
Aww, you’re so sweet to always keep his mobility and happiness at heart! We have a ford fiesta that we would lean the passenger seat back and a blanket on it for our girl. That’s when I’d travel alone. When we’d travel with her, we put the back seats down for her to lay on.
Even within your house you thought of him with lots of rugs or runners so he doesn’t slide about. We did the same. As well as kept fresh water in different rooms for her.
There are no guarantees the new seating arrangements will work, but nothing ventured, nothing gained. Worth a shot......

I absolutely love the van idea. It is clear that he's no longer going to go up on the sofa, but if he can be closer to you and still safe on the floor, why not just do it?
Even if you do it in parts, with the main job first and the swivel seat later, he will still be able to be part of the journey as you said.

My only concerns with taking out that section in the van is Sherpa won't have a turn spot if he chooses to go up on the cushioned area unless you help him. The other is in giving him more space below means he would be more likely get tossed about if (heaven forbid) you were in an accident. He should have a tether on his harness no matter what vehicle he's in for safety. Just thoughts Jamie.

I love that idea! You may not even need a new front seat. It looks like he could stick his face between the front seats now. He does not need ALL the way in the front. Just enough for his face.

Honestly, I don't think it's necessary to change out the front seat. THOUGHT - Don't change out the front seat until you've done the other stuff and see how that works for Sherpa.
I think if you took out the part of the bed that you don't use, and put Sherpa's bed there he would be perfectly happy because he would be close to you for an occasional pet, treat, and he would have a lot more room. For dogs it tends to be more about space for them to lay down so they can stretch out . I'm not sure you would gain enough space between the two seats to really accomplish that. You could always do it later.

Removing the seat could be a good idea just have a provision for a seat belt or something to connect the harness too so that there is not too much shuffle like in the old white van 😊

Be very carefull when making changes to a vehicle you may have to let your insurance company and the DVLA if changing a 3 seater to a 2 seater also a dog now has to be secure in a vehicle when in transit so i would check before making changes.Sorry to be a party pooper but would not want you to be fined also if the police see Sherpa not secure they may not let you drive the van until he is.

Jamie, I think change the seat to a single swivel and take out the bed across the front behind the seats so Sherpa can walk up to front and lay down and be next to you. I think he will love that arrangement since he has a hard time negotiating ramps and step-ups. Good luck!! ❤❤❤❤❤❤

I think the idea you have for the van is an awesome one! I think he would be more comfortable and it would give you more space to pick things up too! (If he felt more comfortable in a tighter space, maybe make a box for his bed to go in so he feels snug?)
