  • There is a famous quote that says life is not about finding yourself it is about creating yourself. It was said by George Bernard Shaw. What do you think this means? Do you have any opinions or advice or people? If so, please leave a comment below.

So many young people spend their formative years waiting for “adulthood” to wash over them and teach them how to live. Its only years later that they realize that there is no magic age that makes everything make sense, everyone is scared and struggling, but those who are the doing the best are those who take a moment every day to learn to be better.

No. I'll tell you what life is actually about.. and this is not coming from a holier-than-thou viewpoint or some egotistical need to prove I'm better than you..
Life is just about having an experience. AKA living the life you live. That is literally it. Anything else that happens or you believe is either A) your mind dictating the experience and assigning meaning or B) an external force/God/Universe that has laid out a scripted timeline for you to follow for whatever reason they chose for it to be so..
That's it, and it's a coin flip. You are either here to just be here and there doesn't need to necessarily be a logical reason or game-plan, or you are here for a very particular meaning that you can't comprehend because you don't have the capacity to do so by design
Would love for anyone to try to argue against that. Again, I've just understood this deeply and it is the answer. It's one of those two. There is no other option. And besides, even those two main options still have the sense of human interpretation within them because they both include the awareness viewing something with either no meaning or meaning.

    • @surrealistidealist
      @surrealistidealist 11 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

@@lakeboy1908 I'm not really clear on what you're trying to say. Why can it only be A or B? It seems we really have a combination of internal and external states that are always influencing each other, so that should give us reason to reflect on ourselves, on our world, and on the life we want to live.
We start out as kids with low self-awareness and a weak understanding of things in general. And during this very vulnerable period of ours, we depend on other people to socialize, educate and inform us. Those other people have their own ideas about who we are and what we might become, but they can be highly fallible and they very well might not even have our best interests in mind regardless. So as we mature and strive for independence, we have to continually examine all our attitudes and opinions and rethink our identities and what means the most to us. Ideally we can then share our reflections with our peers to generate insightful dialogs, and we can then pass on great conversations to the next generation. But all of this involves a lot of serious thought and work. It's a big responsibility we all should be trying to fulfill even though too many of us don't.

I think it's useful to know what you're naturally good at but that shouldn't guide you, like you said, it puts you in this state where you wait for something external to "hit you", when it's really simpler than that: what does your heart yearn for? A teacher of mine said something similar to this, that you shouldn't worry much about it because if you have purpose you'll eventually achieve whatever it is that you desire.
This motivated me to try and be better as well, I'm a closed, introverted guy but that's not who I envision, I want to be different, someone who is more comunicative, social and can speak eloquently. It is one hell of a road ahead but there's no other option for my spirit

I was just trying to tell this to my niece who just got out of high school. She seems to feel like she has no choices or autonomy. She seems to not know even what she likes and just wants others to tell her what to do. No matter how I word it, she seems to think either I'm wrong or she just doesn't believe me. It just makes me sad to see a young person so uninspired and disengaged. I understand why, things are different than when I grew up, but its hard to know how to help. My life was a lot worse than hers in many ways growing up, but i had by that time so much rich life experience and knowledge about myself with which to make hard decisions for myself and be bold about it. I had built up self confidence, which I feel is lacking with many youth today.

i dont know what i believe. the more i 'learn' the less i seem to know. nothing is created or destroyed, i feel we already have everything we need to show up as our best selves. maybe life is about taking what materials we are born with and over time continuously transforming them to change with us. i think a lot of people, including myself, are scared of this changing, but its the only thing in life that is constant. everything is always changing and transforming from one thing to another. my biggest struggle recently has been accepting this change, i feel im losing a part of myself. leaving her behind. but i wouldnt be here without everything she has been through, she will never be gone, but i just have to let go and accept that a new version of myself is emerging and let her go. thank yourself and forgive yourself often. we are just human. what a beautiful thing to be, yet when times get tough we fail to appreciate that very fact.

I didn't really want to write this, but since I saw how great this community is I thought why not. I wanted to say that I have my own theory that seems similar to this quote and seems to justify it. Throughout many hardships and their lessons I've encountered so far, it seems to me (and quite a few other philosophers I discovered later) that life is a form of art. It feels like the art of creating what you like and expressing yourself with your ideas, speeches, drawings, writings and so on. You can sense that too, if you ever solved a problem on your own or came up with your own idea, you probably sensed a feeling of happiness and achievement. That is, what I like to call, your higher self being satisfied (your bigger version of you) by your creation of something that's yours and exploring the unknown. On the other hand, because art is about creating and not destroying, you will probably find destroying disgusting in life (like insulting, disrespect and so on). This is my theory in a nutshell and it stretches far beyond a youtube comment. I descibed it poorly and I don't know if you, the reader, can really understand what I'm saying. You may know what i'm talking about, but I don't know if you can understand it... Anyway if you do that's great, but if you fel that you don't and you want to, I reccomend that you explore the works of people like Nietzsche, Camus and Proust.

    • @Sportsproet
      @Sportsproet 12 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

You put it very clearly in precise words. Did you come up with this theory yourself? If so thats awesome you came up with it yourself. it very much alignd with what i believe but i came to it be reading spiritual works here and there. So if im understanding it right the believe is we are all ine collective conscience but its boring to be just one entitiy. So to experience ourselves we split up in many consciousnes all playing different characters. we chose this life this game character to experience life from its own unique perspective. And our goal as a conscious collective is to gather as many perspectives as possible. An expansion of the collective. Sometimes when we act from the right intention and flow state act in accordance to who we truly are our higher self shines though. Our higher self i literally our better version the one that lives in a higher dimension that is the evolved version of ourselves. There is an interesting book from a guy with multiple good books about carl jung works and it says that creation cannot be without destruction. Creation without destruction is harmful so cultures used to act out the destruction in rituals to make it an deliberate act instead of destruction finding its natural way to set the balance straight. Interesting short read i can recommend it. Unfortunately dont know more details something with shadow side.

It's largely fiction, with it being almost impossible to see the larger part of yourself (your subconscious) without a lot of dream interpretation or a technique called, "active imagination". The journey isn't merely about self-improvement; it's about profound transformation and discovery. Your true self is not a pre-existing entity waiting to be uncovered; it is something you continuously create. While physical constraints may exist, the essence of defining yourself is boundless. This is why people often grow weary of static identities and yearn for new ones, perpetually seeking to redefine themselves.

You're right in that finding yourself isn't a passive activity. You have to actively explore by creating. It's easy to find things you like doing but continuing to feed that hunger through creating and exploring (making time for it) can be challenging.

In my opinion, it's a mixture of both, as many things are. Everyone obviously has their own set of strengths and weaknesses as you said and initially you have to discover these among other things about yourself. Then you can gradually build on top of that and create the you that you want to become, but there are of course certain limitations on this building process defined by your genetics and other parameters. In other words, everyone kind of has their own personality "template" which they can enhance through sheer effort, developing your math skills or your running technique or whatever. However, I think it's important to be mindful of the limitations too, as I said. You're not going to become the next Srinivasa Ramanujan or the next Usain Bolt just by expending effort, but I would imagine that for most people it's possible to get pretty far just by working hard.

I am 21, took a six months break from collegue (med school) that is soon coming to an end. I experienced burnout, a painful breakup from an almost three years relationship, on top of economic difficulties and a lot of self doubt. The whole thing of finding myself is what I have been trying to do for the past months but nothing seemed to fit so far, is like all the things around me that were supposed to be a part of my identity don't really resonate with me at the momet. This video has renewed my hope, a part of me was afraid that what I am now is all I could be, but CREATING myself is a total change of perspective. Thanks for this video.

Key insight for me is DO THIS ON SHORT CYCLES. "finding yourself" can be a trap where we think there's a finish line and when you get there the prize is you in all your fully realised potential.

A thought-provoking topic. I think subconsciously, I’ve always leaned more heavily towards the notion that life is about finding yourself, though after watching your video I think I want to try and hold a more balanced perspective between finding vs creating.
For me, an issue I’ve noticed with the “finding yourself” narrative is that oftentimes, as a young person, I have found there is nothing to find, and these moments where I have come up empty, blank, again and again only served as a means for cultivating intense self-loathing, as I became frustrated with myself for having no answers and wondering, through a severely critical lens, “what is wrong with me? Why, when I think about these questions do I come up empty? This must mean something is wrong or broken or inferior about me, since introspection is supposed (“supposed”) to be clarifying…”.
Huh. Feels like I’m having a bit of a breakthrough moment. It seems that maybe for me, the pursuit of “finding myself” has mostly reinforced the existing negative self-concepts I’ve held for years more than it has proved a useful tool for actually better understanding myself. I just thought I was a loser or a failure when my self-reflection didn’t lead to answers but rather, to dead-ends or an endless spiral of subsequent questions.

It's really cool!

I think it’s about creating yourself more so than finding yourself, at least for me. I’ve always felt that for most things, I’m just decent at them. I can be pretty good, even really good at most things, but I’ve never been the best. I can’t ever seem to break into that top 1% elite category with any skill. But I also don’t think it’s necessary to be fulfillled. I think finding something you believe you can do, and working hard to be the best you can be in that skill, will be enough to propel into at least SOME level of success that will allow you to prosper in this life to some degree. Not everyone can be the best, but you can be WAY better than if you didn’t put in the work, and way better than most of the competitors as well.

as the world gets more complex, the things within it tend to follow.
This video reminded me of Brian greene’s book called mastery.
I tend to think about every person (that stays *generally* healthy in the brain) having their own general core that remains unchanged, but the outer layers of the circle can be influenced.
it is really best to start doing something, anything and reflecting with notes or thoughts after you put good energy into it. if you look with clear eyes, you can build information and data from good feelings and bad feelings.
there is a nature component, a nurture component, and random mutations of us that occur/become as Steven Pinker “says” about who we are.
you can understand about how a lot of pieces work, but at the end of the day you just have to keep moving and make observations as you go.
Discipline and strong will can go a long way if you decide to not choose the path of least resistance.
ps: incubus album said: “make yourself” and google the neil tyson quote about meaning. tis a good one.

I think life is about both, finding and creating yourself. They go hand in hand. You are creating yourself when you go into a direction that you want to pursue or explore, the things you try out become a part of you.. every once a while, it's helpful to re-assess yourself and your life. We can look back on the things we have collected on our ways and who we've become. When you have lost touch with parts of yourself that have been important, that are missing now, you are in the process of finding yourself again. When you've collected things you don't need or want anymore, you can let go of the things. Maybe it's not possible to undo what you've learned and who you've become right away, but it's possible to create something new instead and slowly letting go of the things that aren't needed anymore. You can find yourself by creating yourself and vice versa.

  • @rockNdoII

I think, as you said, you have to know yourself before you can create yourself. Just like anything you study… you have to study yourself to become the creator of yourself.
Otherwise you might find that you created a persona and lost yourself on the way…
If you find yourself first you will know what you’re able to do and not.. and it’s so much work finding yourself, really.. but so worth it! Once you did the work you’ll have the confidence to create the best version of yourself and not having to pretend to be someone you’re not.

I think that life is just way too huge to be put it a box. It can also at the same time be whatever you want it to be. If you want to find yourself, life can be that, if you want it to be about discovering yourself, it can also be that.

The semantics on this can become a bit circular without addressing the notion itself or the motivation behind it, which is likely to lead to a short term "a-ha! have to create myself" but days later you'll realize you are right where you started. In fact i'd argue that in some way, the choice between creating and finding is a false one.
The semantics are only changing the reference point but not addressing the essence of the question itself. Putting the journey in terms of "creating" rather than "finding" is akin to placing a different title on the same movie, it might change the frame of the movie but it's still the same storyline.
And the storyline, regardless of what we call the movie, is whether you believe that you have some kind of ordained purpose or character that has been imbued in you or not, and that it is your duty to discover it or not. If you do, then even creation is still an act of finding because it's coming from that very same purpose, if there was a slight distinction it could be that finding might inspire more passive reflection whereas creation could inspire action, but both are part of the same coin which is why i say it's a false choice and it's still the same movie.
The other true choice, or alternative movie if you will, is that you do not believe that you have a specific purpose, and perceive yourself as limitless potential that can be shaped into anything you desire, but then you haven't really created you've only eliminated.
I do think this question on purpose can lead to endless frustration for many people, because for those with a clear sense of purpose, they will follow it anyways despite what they're told, and for those without, this question leads only to disappointment because of the perception that they fail to measure up. I think an alternative and more effective path to take to make a personal conclusion on this journey is to ask yourself a slightly different question, which is whether you believe in destiny or you don't.

I have been struggling for the most part of my life and I totally agree with your point of view about life about creating yourself and finding yourself. Though it’s a bit hard to discover what’s you naturally good at unless you try many things to find that. I have pushing myself hard into a career I chose though I had a lot of road blocks no guidance no training no vision and I put myself in school multiple times hopefully that could help me creating myself. The thing is I’m tired dealing with that along myself. I question myself did I choose wrong.. is it really for me !! Am I getting old or depressed or both. I don’t want to sound helpless but I made it so far in life moving across the globe working for different companies got different degrees. Then What .. I see no goal. Or I didn’t set a goal .. I don’t know.

I remember that as a teenager I used to think that adults " figured it out ". Whatever that means. I was even looking forward to it. You know, like a videogame character hitting max level, max stats, beating the game.
And now I tap into who I am since the beginning, with the experience of that adulthood. Everything else is vastly random and out of your control.

Whoever advances humanity is just another privileged person with luck or a well-engineered opening condition, it is not worthy despite the vital contribution. Humanity’s current need is to give recognition and a place worthy of millions of people who have been really screwed on one side, but on the other hand, not strong enough to receive recognition and help. It's about managing and developing your assets. Everyone has innate advantages or disadvantages according to their genetics that can guide them in determining their future. On top of that, enviromental factors such as your location, culture, parents etc. further determines the opprotunites (and lack of) you may have or gain. Just as water flows down the path of most ease, people will likely dedicate themselves to improving what they are most savant in. True mastery of the self however helps you be in control of what you are willing to do. Some people are naturally more prone to addiction then others, which if they are presented with the wrong opportunities can lead them down the wrong road. But if said person were to realize this and control it, they could use it to become "addicted" to a hobby that improves themselves. Knowing what you are and trying to be the best version of yourself, the person you want to be, and having the discipline to master your weaknesses and leverage your strenghts is the best thing anyone can do.

That's a really good quote haha! Much different than the ones I thought were cool. Do you have any advice for those who didn't have the greatest resources in high school math that are trying to learn Calculus in uni now? What's a good way to figure out which topics we're really not so good in or could improve? thanks love the videos!!

Alternatively (I already wrote a comment): Life can be about none of these things. You could just go with the flow, and kind of accidently find yourself or create yourself. I think, life is just about finding out for yourself. There is something so freeing about the thought of not needing to fulfill a purpose (i.e. finding or creating myself).

I frequently wonder if I have unexplored talent.
I've been programming video games since a young age and became a computer programming professor at age 24.
With such a title, you could argue that I have a proclivity for programming. I was never the top of my class, but I was always interested in creative problem solving.
At the same time, I've always been pretty active and more interested in sports than a lot of my "fellow programmers" if you know what I mean.
I was never able to make rep teams when I was younger so being a knowledge worker was probably the right path, but I can't help wonder if I'd turn out differently if I pushed harder in athletics and didn't take such a "safe" path.

Life is just, life is perfect, all lifeforms and events has already established themselves worthy. Which is why they still exist, still relevant in some way. Even if it bothers, it still remains perfect and our discomfort is just a perfect response.
Thus I agree that we are not required to find our mythical 'true self' to keep up with life. Ultimate purpose of life is to live.

I notice that you are the spontaneous type of guy who creates himself in any new way possible each day, while blindly exploring the path forward. I am quite the opposite of you. I am a detailed organizer and planner. I have fully defined my path for the future with almost no variation in my path. So I spent years in figuring out this path, but now I have to just execute it. It might be a boring journey of knowing what you become, but at least the path has become very simple and clear to me, which is more important.
