- To celebrate the end of Halloween 2019, Awfully Good Movies presents the second part of our Halloween special...CASPER: A SPIRITED BEGINNING! Yes, you children of the 90s probably have fond memories of the first CASPER movie from 1995, as producer Steven Spielberg brought his magic touch to a live-action film version of the beloved cartoon character who was always looking for a friend in spite of his frighteningly ghostly appearance. But one year before Saban Entertainment would ruin the Addams Family, they decided to take another Halloween-related film property starring Christina Ricci and give it a direct-to-video reboot in association with Casper's owners at Harvey Entertainment. And this time, they gave audiences the origin story of Casper and his ghostly trio of uncles that no one was asking for, especially since that first movie already explored Casper's pre-ghost backstory and no kid wanted to see a prequel where Devon Sawa as Casper slowly dies of pneumonia. Unfortunately, the prequel we get instead ends up being far worse than that, as director Sean McNamara of 3 NINJAS: HIGH NOON AT MEGA MOUNTAIN fame brings his signature unfunny slapstick to the tale of a newly dead Casper hanging out with a lonely boy named Chris whose father played by Steve Guttenberg is far too busy trying to build a mini-mall in the middle of town to pay attention to his son, while Guttenberg's plans are held up by the Ghostly Trio of Stretch, Stinky and Fatso haunting the inside of the to-be-demolished Applegate Mansion. And as Casper tries bringing this fractured father and son back together and trying to learn how to be a ghost from the Ghostly Trio, he comes across an all-star cast: Rodney Dangerfield, Michael McKean, Sherman Hemsley, and in a hilariously ironic bit of casting, Lori Loughlin playing the boy's schoolteacher, as well as James Earl Jones and (*shudder*) Pauly Shore voicing the roles of two villainous ghosts trying to drag Casper back to their ghost training program. But no one in this cast can help improve the subpar CGI effects and the constant stream of cliches from 90s kids comedies which makes CASPER: A SPIRITED BEGINNING yet another subpar direct-to-video ripoff from the corporate fatcats at Saban Entertainment. However, I will give this movie a little credit, in that it prevented me yet again from having to review either of those Madea Halloween movies for my Halloween special this year. Whew...another bullet dodged there. Hallo Happyween, Everybody!

Fun fact: The 1996 spin-off series to the first film, The Spooktacular New Adventures of Casper established in one episode that Casper is 113 years old, (and turning 114 in April of '96. Meaning that Casper was born in 1882 and died at the age of 12 in 1884. Further proving this movie is now way canon to the 1995 movie and is a reboot set in the 90s. Thank Christ because I don't want this or it's follow up sequel canon with a good movie.

i agree. when i saw the movie in '98, as i was 22, i did liked it. but now today i had outgrown it since it didn't aged well.
In the first movie its made clear stinky, Fatso, and streatch are Caspers uncles and the cartoon its stated that casper is related to the trio.

The prequels and sequels squashed any chance for the original 1995 movie to have a sequel. They were so bad and strayed away from the feeling of the original. That movie is STILL one of my favs to this day. The music is spectacular, the effects still hold up and the whole project had a feel all it's own. Unlike a lot of movies today that follow a corporate check list the original 1995 movie did its own thing.
I don't count these THINGS as canon to the original film is what I'm saying. As far as I'm concerned they exist. XD

Nah, I'd say the bullies from Goosebumps are more Stephen King-eque than the bullies in this film. The bullies in this film come off as generic villains from a typical 90s after school special or hell, even the generic bullies from most 90s kids films like Mr. Nanny.
The only way for this movie to fit into the cannon of the 1995 movie is if Casper apparently lied to Kat about his backstory.

For some reason this was one of those movies that kids just ate up and watched over and over. I remember watching this movie tons of times as well, which is weird because we also had the 95 film on VHS, but I remember watching this one way more.
The kids at my babysitter also fucking loved this movie.

Probably because Wendy’s aunts looked like Saban’s Big Bad Hocus Pocus-borgs And George Hamilton was the big bad and he appeared in The Last Unicorn too which was mocked by Rifftrax and Zorro the Gay Blade so better than “A Boy and His Guttenberg featuring Aunt Becky goes to Prison”.

This movie confuses me, because Casper stayed behind for his father. So he came right back home right after he died. So none of this makes sense?
I just say this movie and it's follow up isn't canon. It's in a new timeline or a reboot. Because this Casper's backstory, lore, and rules are so different from the first film.

To be honest, as bad as the sequels were, Casper Meets Wendy was the best one out of the sequels. It’s still bad though, but compared to this sequel it’s not as bad. At least they tried to stick with the original story of Wendy and Casper. But without a doubt the Christina Ricci version is the best one of the movies.

It's not from any specific movie. It's a stock sound effect called the "Howie Scream" after its prominent use for the death of Howie Long's character in BROKEN ARROW. It's also heard in the opening theme song of the Nickelodeon show AAH! REAL MONSTERS.

despite that a spirited beginning was a bad movie and that it was the worst casper movie in history, two of the original characters like kibosh and snivel became popular enough to be recurring characters of the franchise, where kibosh would be casper's arch-enemy. like kibosh and snivel returned in haunted christmas and then kibosh returned again in scare school.

Damn I hated this movie as a kid.. so much I didn't watch it until I was almost 20 because I wondered if it was truly that bad and I'm a glutton for punishment, and yes it is. It completely crapped on what made the first one good and just ignored it which always baffled me (thanks for the explanation there for why, it makes more sense,) The CGI is somewhat decent for being DTV but shamefully the movie around it was such crap it didn't help. What amazes me is how many big names they got in this: Guttenburg, Rodney effing Dangerfield, McKean, Jailbait.. I mean Loughlin, Bull from Night Court, they even had James Earl Jones doing a voiceover! Saban musta spent a lot of dough on this hoping for it to be good only to turn out so bad.. The little kid actor's so awful in this.. I know he was trying hard but he wasn't a good actor. I laughed at his breakdown scene near the end, so soapy and over dramatic. Guttenburg's so unlike himself here and it's just odd to watch, the rant he has when he destroys the kids stuff was one of the more WTF moments of my childhood and why I hated the movie. I loved Police Academy and 3 Men and a Baby when I was a kid and to see him be such an ass was just odd.. now I find it hilarious. He musta been really desperate or something because Zeus and Roxeanne wasn't long before this. McKean's a hoot as is Rodney but they always delivered.
I always loved Casper Meets Wendy though.. Duff was so adorable when she was a kid and she was one of my first crushes when I was a kid. That one felt more like a pure Casper movie unlike this one and it had a great cast in it too. If they had skipped this one and made Wendy instead in 1998 the series woulda went better. Sadly Spirited Beginning was such a hot turd it ruined everything.
