    The Gold Line only makes sense with a fast Silver Line and fast Red Line feeding it. The Gold Line can cover the little stops, but the Silver Line will have to have transfer points to it on Hawthorne and both the Red Line and Silver Line will have to feed it at Gateway Center. It's a low-speed circulator, and a future connector of faster lines to the bus terminal across from Spectrum Arena, not really anything more.

      Yes. They should have spent that funding on the silver line first. It's like the guy said towards the end, the goldline is great if you're not in a hurry. And that's the problem, people are always in a hurry. So getting people where they need to go fast should have been their first focus. They haven't gotten enough people out of their cars to justify a street car yet.
      They can't do the red line until they do the Silver line. But I don't know whether they should do the red line or the street car extension first. Both kind of reline on the Blue and Silver line connections. Other wise there won't be enough people out of their cars and on buses to get people where they need to go fast enough to get people out of their cars.

    1:17 "traffic has gotten... ridiculous as you can actually see behind us here" he says as a total of one car occupies the street. 3:21 We're already inundated with condos... we've already lost so much of our neighborhood character due to that". It's called progress - sorry. And places go out of business ALL THE TIME. New flash to the reporter: Streetcar was not meant to go faster than traffic - the whole idea is that it shares the street with traffic, as a way of getting around without a car.

      This was push on us. And this is coming from someone who is prorail.
      The fact that LR shares the street with vehicles makes it more like a streetcar line, not particularly LR.
      But we are constantly sold that building this transportation is making progress. But it is reinventing what failed nearly a century ago. And that is traffic.
      If hardly people are using it and traffic is already bad, it is creating an even bigger problem.
      So if government really want to make a difference, they should dedicated streets for LR only or simply spend the damn! Money! And elevate it.

      @@qolspony Yea they jumped the gun on the streetcar when there simply isn't the infrastructure for a Street car.
      No public transit didn't fail a century ago. Infact it was sabotaged by car companies because public transit cut into their profits. Why buy a car if you can ride public transit for cheaper? Well if you rip them up and make it so the public transit is so bad and inefficient that it's financially viable to own a car, that solved the competition problem between public transit and cars. Now we're swinging back and I don't know if the leadership in CATS have an interest in the car industry or just incompetent or both?

      NIMBY business owner completely ignoring that the streetcar opens up his biz to a HUGE amt of people that use transit and/or don’t own a car. or just tourists or visitors that don’t have one!

    0:50 Is there a reason why it goes slower than the speed limit? I think that is one of the factors that is preventing this from being successful. I haven't ridden the gold line yet. but maybe it would be a good idea to not have the streetcar stop at each station for quite so long. (Maybe 5 or 10 seconds unless a passenger wishes to get on or off) They can push the button on the door if they want to get off. This way, the gold line will hopefully reduce the traffic backups it is causing as a result

      What you are proposing is basically a bus. Street car/trams are a different mode. The issue with America is there love of cars. What should be done is vehicular movements. Of course people are going to complain that it will increase traffic congestion, etc. In reality there will be little to no increase in travel times on adjacent streets while street car trips will be much faster. The reason why street cars can’t go the speed limit is because these roads were designed for cars which have much faster acceleration and braking.

    • @OliverHarrington
      @OliverHarrington 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@cityplanner3063 this is not entirely true. Although they do have a lower rate of acceleration and deceleration than cars, the streetcars don't travel at the speed limit a lot of the time because of the curvature of the roads on which their tracks are built. Cars and road vehicles can safely travel faster around curves than streetcars and other rail vehicles, for many reasons, including the fact that there aren't people standing that could fall over in cars like there are in streetcars, etc. Streetcars are also much heavier, longer, and wider than cars, so they lead to more wear-and-tear on the rails the faster they travel around curves, so they have to travel slower than cars to reduce the amount of maintenance that needs to be done on the rails.
      As for the idea of skipping stops unless someone wants to get on or off the streetcar, this is actually fairly common practice among streetcar systems around the country and world. For example, on one of the most successful streetcar systems in the country, the KC Streetcar in Kansas City, trains only stop at platforms if there's someone waiting on the platform to get on the train or if someone inside the train has requested a stop, just like a bus. This really helps to speed up service along the line, and also eliminates most of the traffic jams that are caused by streetcars blocking the road while sitting at a stop. I don't know why the Gold Line doesn't do this, but it really should - it would greatly increase the speed of the service and ease the traffic jams along its route.

    Little things like signal prioritization and adding crossing gates to the busiest intersections will improve travel times tremendously. Currently the Gold Line is just a glorified bus with the average speed of one.

    Come on ....what do you want....a High Speed Train to go thru this neighborhood? I think this is perfect for this part of town..../. those cars can go to the other streets adjacent to the line...to avoid being stuck behind. people complain and complain about everything is just soooo annoying. Yeah try that on a rainy day on your bike buddy and then tell us about it.

      The only way to remove traffic congestion is by providing viable alternatives.
      America is just so behind with public transport. No one is going to catch this tram if it takes 35 mins to travel 4 miles. In Sydney tram makes the same 4 mile trip (crossing major arterial roads) in only 15 mins. How is that done? Tram has its own right of way and also traffic light priority. As a city planner I give this a D-

    They should have bitten the bullet and gotten a dedicated right of way for that line. Another option would be to make that a transit only corridor, then the lights could be synchronized to give priority for the train over the cross streets.

    • @OliverHarrington
      @OliverHarrington 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      They wouldn't even have to make this road a transit-only corridor to synchronize the lights to give priority to the streetcar - they could easily just adjust the timing of the lights without changing anything else, and maybe install some technology that detects the presence of an approaching streetcar and turns all the lights in its path green so it doesn't have to stop. This has been done in countless other applications, and to make the Gold Line really worth riding at all, they need to implement transit signal priority for it too.

    Transit today is about gentrifying the neighborhood, so much about moving people. And that's because we give the politician and planners the power to dictate what it should be. And at the end, the people that suppose to benefit from this looses.
    Anyway, all future light rail should be elevated as not to compete with traffic. Because unlike before, their are nicer designs that could be used to build them.
    I know it is much more expensive, but you hear what they are saying in this video.
