New Idea, just don't assemble minifigures, heck at that point just don't open the set bags so the minifigure parts are never exposed to the elements. Even better, don't buy Lego at all if you never have minifigures in the first place you don't have to worry about them!
It's crazy to me that this is starting to become a legitimate problem, I have Lego from probably a decade ago and minifigs and bricks are still perfectly fine. The dropping quality over the past few years has been very surprising to me considering Lego built their brand off of being the highest quality, best building toy. Really hope that soon these issues become non-issues again because the amount of damage I've seen both in bricks and minifigs over the past few years compared to the years before and the years before those is insane
I actually didn’t know LEGO was made from ABS plastic, I work in a plastics factory and that’s one of the main plastic materials we use, as well as ASA, Polypropylene and a bunch of others
From an engineering standpoint, the best way to avoid material stress and cracking is to maintain a constant humidity and warmth in the storage container- it avoids thermal expansion/contraction of the materials at uneven rates and avoids cracking and stresses. Though, that may be a bit expensive for legos.
A cigar humidor would actually make for a pretty decent solution in that case as they're specifically built for keeping the contents at a certain room temperature and humidity.
I mean it’s science. The figures holding themselves together is purely due to the stress pressure created when you connect each piece. If pieces didn’t push on each other then the fig would simply just fall apart.
The cracked torsos would always bother me as a kid. I would build sets, then tear them down for parts, and would swap out the mini figs to make custom characters. I made a whole sci fi universe where the bionicals were ancient space mech fighters piloted by humans in a galactic war. So I played with my Lego a lot is what I am saying. And before you think I was being destructive and tough with them as a kid, I always cherished my toys. I’d get those stress cracks in the sides of a minifig that was only a couple years old and never know why and it would stress me out. I did have a huge bin of old vintage legos (I’d have a lot more money now if I kept that bin) but since they were old when I received them and had gotten a lot of play out of them, many had a minor crack. So I just attributed it to them being older than me. But when like my new Obi Wan figure would randomly get a crack I would always get upset. I’d usually glue the crack shut on the inside so it doesn’t show, and be very careful not to put too much. Then cracks are the worst.
That is actual optimal conditions. No Lego attachment so no long term stress, probably no sunlight or moisture/dust to wear the plastic. This is an issue if you want to display them and take them out and use conveniently a lot
Saying I have Legos from the 90s and 80s that don't have any cracks and I have the one Lego that was my literally favorite Lego from the 90s even though I was born in 2001 that I played with every day for probably at least 12 or 13 years and I'm not just talking about playing I'm talking about dropping him sometimes getting ran over one time he's still not broken and has not a single Legos were once made different
Everytime I think “man I’m gonna start a Lego collection” I see the cracks “nah I’m not going through that 😂” props to all the collectors with OCD that are able to walk into a room full of legos and don’t immediately look at the cracking figures 😂
First of all the word Legos doesn’t exist. Lego has no plural and second of all cracking don’t happen 99,99% of the time. Only when you play with the figures a lot it can happen.
Cracking barely happens unless you really mistreat your minifigs, I have 100+ star wars and they're almost all intact crack-wise Also it's just plastic toys (really cool looking plastic toys), so it's not meant to last forever in absolutely perfect conditions Just store your stuff away from direct sunlight and don't expose them to brutal changes of temperature (any room should do the job) and they'll age fine
The issue woth that piece though is it puts stress on the hips. Best thing to do is buy some off brand silicone brick tape, cut it into 1x2 sections, and stick it wherever you store your figures
Yeah I’ve noticed that it does that, but the thing is that the hip piece isn’t going to snap because it’s much thicker plastic. The thinnest parts of the figures like the feet are more prone to cracking, whereas the upper legs are the strongest part arguably
Personally I prefer to store my minifigures in a dark, argon filled, climate controlled, microgravity environment. This really helps to reduce strain on the bricks
If your figures are doing that , contact Lego They could replace them... I've had a few placed that were over eight years old... If you're going to stand your figures Use a little Play-Doh.. But I always store my fingers in plastic bags And I always have multiples of two ones for display one I never touch
The only thing you can do for the torso cracks in to sand the sides of the hip to torso connector so there isn’t as much force on the sides of the torso. Unfortunately this makes the torso not stay on very well.
You can fix cracks in torsos by hyper-extending the cracks a tad bit, then using a toothpick to put a little bit of superglue in the crack and letting it seal. Take a hobby knife or sandpaper to the affected area and it's like new!
You could easily solve the issue of them falling over if you turn the piece backwards that holds them, then put them in feet facing the rear of the piece. Or sideways.
Why is it that in my Lego collection of 25+ years with tens of thousands of pieces have I never once had cracking Minifigures? I get the occasional snapped brown plate, but torso and leg cracks are something that I've never seen until these videos online.
If my torsos crack i put a dab of superglue in the crack and push them together and it works fine, can never tell it was cracked unless you really look for the crack itself
I keep mine in a baggy in my giant old Ogel’s Deep Sea Base Set from Alpha Team. I got a few of Rock Raiders Sets to fit in that box as well. No stress marks. Lol.
Never once have i thought "oh no, i shouldnt do this because its known that from the factory these break easily" because lego will just send you a new one, ive got some brown pieces that broke and some missing ones that didnt come in the bag on the way right now
i’ve had like a “lego box” almost like a tool box with pieces collected over years from my childhood and i had a lego light up mace windu literally just loose in there with small vehicle builds a bunch of mini figs and odd pieces and accessories and it’s in practically perfect condition apart from a small black dot on the torso which is probably from a long long time ago other than that no marks no scratches cape is perfect and the lightsaber even lights up still
For the legs I usually scratch some plastic off so it doesn’t crack then the arms I trim the hole and make it bigger so then there is no cracks the I use fake Lego studs to connect my figs to
Alternatively, you might be able to put specific bricks in front of the official pieces. This is all theoretical, but I'd imagine cheese slopes would work well.
My guess is because the fact that they’re hollow means that they’re less thick than the legs and as a result are unable to resist the pressure created by the foot holes. Ordinarily the studs would be the ones creating pressure by pushing the foot holes outwards but I guess In this case the opposite would happen.

There’s a Kyle Katarn mini-fig???
Gimme!
*Time to go scour the Internet so I can hopefully add him to my collection!*
I feel like lego should try and update the torsos to not crack under the stress of just being attached to the legs
Agreed
I think Andy's mom put it best in Toy Story 2:
"Toys don't last forever"
I mean it’s science. The figures holding themselves together is purely due to the stress pressure created when you connect each piece. If pieces didn’t push on each other then the fig would simply just fall apart.
Lego plastic has definitely improved, I am interested to see Lego's stress tests since the early ones mentioned hear
Yeah, lego is too expensive to have this kind of quality issues
That explains why my brown/marroon Lego pieces are so fragile. I swear I thought I was just being too rough, but didn’t realize they were weaker
Why not just store them sideways so they don't fall over?

The torso cracks can be fixed with superglue and a knife blade. It will still leave a faint black line but other than that it looks pretty normal.

Yooo, that Kyle Katarn lookin' clean af
How does the rounded part prevent cracking the feet? Are the pegs on the part you suggested at the end a little bit smaller?
Idk but I want to know too
It’s the holes in the stud, not the brick itself
I think the idea is that because the studs on the top are hollow it places less stress on the inside of the legs
cause the plastic can be bent
Everytime the torsos get cracked my soul gets cracked too
You can just simply turn that black piece you showed to the opposite direction, so the figures won’t fall when you move the drawer.
Personally I prefer to store my minifigures in a dark, argon filled, climate controlled, microgravity environment. This really helps to reduce strain on the bricks

Just don't store the figures in an Ikea drawer 😂
I designed some 3d printed torso spacers to put in between the torso and the legs so it helps with the amount of tension on the torso

unprecedented music taste for a lego channel
The only thing you can do for the torso cracks in to sand the sides of the hip to torso connector so there isn’t as much force on the sides of the torso. Unfortunately this makes the torso not stay on very well.
I've only ever experienced cracked heels with newer figures and brown pieces
I wonder if someone could 3d print color matching leg spacers so pieces won’t crack and it still looks good
You can fix cracks in torsos by hyper-extending the cracks a tad bit, then using a toothpick to put a little bit of superglue in the crack and letting it seal. Take a hobby knife or sandpaper to the affected area and it's like new!
Why is the rounded 1x2 plate better? More flex with the studs not being solid?
I keep them in tubs, I have them sorted by Trilogy, Standalone Film, Clones, Droids, Empire, Rebels, Jedi
Use the green foam that hobbyists use in some artificial flower decorations.
Does the rounded 1x2 plate with open studs not cause as much stress as having minifigs on closed studs on a plate or brick?
You could easily solve the issue of them falling over if you turn the piece backwards that holds them, then put them in feet facing the rear of the piece. Or sideways.
Maybe turn around the placement of figures so they just get more snug instead of falling out of the piece.
Why is it that in my Lego collection of 25+ years with tens of thousands of pieces have I never once had cracking Minifigures? I get the occasional snapped brown plate, but torso and leg cracks are something that I've never seen until these videos online.

Well with the drawer turn that part around so that they move Into the part instead of out of it
Store them facing sideways. They won't topple over when you open the drawer.
My Lego from the 80s still looks mint
Believe it or not, this is the reason why I stopped buying lego, minifigure and brick cracking
