People think automatic neural nets are new or relatively new. But Bernie Widrow invented them back in 1959. Called the Adeline network. Multi-layer? That was his Madeline network. I have to stifle myself when current machine learning experts act like they invented neural networks. I took classes from Bernie when I was a graduate student. Great guy. As you can hear from his great stories, very inspiring. Thanks for this nice interview.
Many thanks to Dr Sorrow Many thank to Dr Widrow and his associate for this marveelous interview. I studied the LMS algorithm for my PhD dissertation (TCD, Dublin, 1990, I think) and its wonder is its profound simplicity.
Yes and NO! What was invented in 1959 is extraordinary far from anything remotely resembling what is going on in neural networks today. He definitely was on the correct path and definitely had many good ideas in the 60’s, 70’s & 80’s but he purposefully distanced himself from the “terminology” of neural networks (not the technology) due to politics of funding.
What a privilege to hear Dr. Widrow speak about his lifetime experiences!!! Thank you for making this available and for giving it the time it deserves! What a treasure! I remember how delighted and enlightened I was to read his Adaptive Signal Processing (co written with Samuel Stearns) this interview was mesmerizing to me!
Is he still alive? If so my Grandfather William Guy Redmond was in the servo-lab and was on WHIRLWIND analog to digital communications with electromagnetic tape memory for command and control.1951 later evolved that into Fly-by-Wire and tandem Multiplexing unit.
Yes he is still alive, and there is a relatively recent interview on youtube. It is on the International Neural Network Society youtube channel. A bit long and repetitive at times but interesting if you what to get updated on his last book and his thoughts.
I remember your class. I worked for the Instrumentation Lab on adaptive autopilots. I owe you.
He needs waaaaay more recognition. Solid human being.
Cadillac Man is definitely a time traveler

This is one of the best interviews I've ever seen. Each part of these 2 hours is fascinating! Looking forward to hearing more about memories.

I respect you very much sir and it is an honor for me to hear part of your life. I congratulate you on your great work and humility.
What a privilege and joy to listen to you speak, Mr. Widrow !
These stories are fantastic and give life to this era full of pioneers on the edge of changing the world.
I wish there was discussion on his paper "Punish/Reward: Learning with a Critic in Adaptive Threshold Systems".

Shoutout to Norwich,CT.
Fascinating individual!
