Right On! Everyone thought that Olivia Newton-John was going to win but she didn't. They were good Friends in future years. She had them on her Second TV Special for ABC called Simply Olivia before Grease came out and in 1979 they did The Unicef Concert. In Europe Eurovision is a very popular Music Contest. Celine Dion won but she was able to enter because her Mother is of Swiss Background. Others who tried to make a comeback with Eurovision was Blue A Manband and Javine Hylton who didn't make Girls Aloud.
I have a memory from the Melody Grand Prix in Brighton back in 1974, where Abba as the first artists in the history of the competition was allowed to use pre - recorded background music for the song Waterloo, just to get the exact right speed for the song
This is the song that got me hooked, first heard it in class, start of 1975 at Alice Springs High (Australia). Loved ABBA ever since, a musical phenomenon.
This was the song that introduced the World to Abba in 1974 when they won The Eurovision Song Concert with it. They wrote it and the rest is history....:)
With this song abba won the Eurovision song contest and then the international carrer came and they changed the style of Eurovision forever as a totally pop contest
As someone who was around when they won Eurovision in 1974 and got the first greatest hits album in 1976 [ Yes, it was out that early ] it's great to see later generations discovering ABBA. Mind you, I don't think many fans back then took that much notice of the lyrics, we just sang along!
The song that started it all...not their first single ever, but winning Eurovision with "Waterloo" ended up being their big break. Thank God for the Aussies for being the first to embrace them and making the rest of the world realize just how special ABBA was.
🧡 ABBA! 🧡 Cher too. Waterloo. It was, is, a song that pulled you to the dance floor. Heaven help you if you were stuck in your car while listening to this. Thanks, Dereck.
I saw those Eurovision outfits a couple of years ago at an ABBA exhibition in London, Agnetha's famous Blue-sequinned skull cap was under glass !! lol ( I did try to steal it !! )
If you to face a very complicated situation, like an astronaut in Ridley Scott's movie The Martian (the song plays in this movie), try "Waterloo", to escape your own Waterloo
Hi Dereck! Thankz a lot for reacting to Abbas music. I grew up with Abba and I still love them. They have so many good songs. You should try "Knowing me knowing you" as they did an interesting video to this great song. "Eagle" is another fantastic song and it´s one of their best recordings ever. Remember that this great music was recorded in a time without any help of computers and the technology artists have today. Everything was recorded live in the studio.
Benny and bjorn wrote this song and they performed it at the Eurovision Song Contest in Brighton U.K. in 1974 and won! ABBA were my favourite band as a kid in the 70s I was in the ABBA fan club 🤣🤣🤣 oh benny and Bjorn wrote all their own songs 🤗
In 1974, the song dusted off the Eurovision Song Contest. The Swedish quartet won and Waterloo instantly became a hit throughout Europe. To ensure promotion in the various countries, the ABBA group rushed to record the song in several languages.
Do more ABBA reactions, can never go wrong reacting to the greatest group that ever existed and their timeless music...:)...a tip..do some of their more underreated and unknow songs too..like Rock Me..Man in the middle... Watch Out...What about Livingstone..songs like those..
If you notice...in the majority of their “up tempo”songs...Agnetha and Anni-Frid don’t really move a lot...even though the majority of the time the tempo and the beat really warrant dancing and moving around....as did the time in which these songs were released and popular....
Benny’s keyboard track is great on this song as it is on so many of their songs. ABBA used the keyboard for rythym back up as much as they did guitars. I think this gives ABBA songs an inviting warm quality as opposed to a possible harder edge with what could occur with overuse of guitars.
Great studio video, wearing the same as the night they won Eurovision with this song, 1974... Pit them on the map, bigly however, if not for Australia, questionable would they have continued??? The stories of shooting their studio videos are interesting, some humorous, some quite incredible!!!
@@user-mv6he6gl8mwe used to. UK has won 5 times, second 15 times. Also the UK still holds the record for the win with the highests percentage of possible points (different from the highest number of points) under the 1 to 12 poimts system. More recently it has done so well. Our big names avoid it like the plauge.
Regarding the "eyeliner" and outfits, they were influenced by the Glam Rock coming out of the UK around this time. David Bowie, T. Rex, Slade are examples of the style, which would later go on to influence KiSS, and going further, the hair bands of the 80s.
Coming from Sweden -ABBA thought the only way to get played in UK or USA, need to win the Eurovision song contest. The went on to win -but the UK and USA would still not play for ABBA songs. But ABBA then played a song : SOS - and then the UK needed to play - as ABBA was too good.
ABBA were very popular in the U.K. but never really made it back in the day in America I think they had the odd hit. But here in the U.K. they had hits but admitting ya liked ABBA was another story, however as an 8 year old in 1976 I never had that problem I absolutely loved ABBA and still do! Today they have found a new fan following due to mamma Mia the musical 🤗
True, i one imterview Bjorn said that if they were British or American they never would have had to resort to Eurovision but at that time a demo tape from Sweden would probably go right in the bin unplayed.
More ABBA..... reactions.. react to one of their spanish songs. React to The Day Before you Came, Eagle, When All is Said and Done, Under Attack, Money, Money, Money.
The pillow's color behind your head isn't correct wrt to green-screen (it appears transparent). I think it's probably a simple careless mistake, but since you also look quite tired in this video, I guess you were going through some rough times at this point in the day? (too many records maybe)
Lol.😂 you look very tired Dereck, she we wearing you out? Lol.😂 sorry if we are, it's just that I saw you very jumpy and up beat in some of your other reactions. Waterloo is ABBAs very own Sondra that Bjorn wrote for them to enter the Eurovision contest.
Please don't stop the video so often, it destroy the whole atmosphere of the song. I've noticed that in several videos of you. Let the song work on you and then tell. And thanks for responding to Abba. :-)
Good reaction, man. I guess it makes a comparison love x battle. Sometimes we have to make some hard concessions in a relationship... Please, would youTry One of Us, I'm a marionette (there's no an official video, but a very disturbing australia 77 show) and so on??
Nobody can deny the impact this song had, being the launchpad that thrust what was destined to become the greatest band in history onto the world's stage. On a personal note, this is the one ABBA song I really don't like. No idea why, but it just is a cringefest as far as I'm concerned. But I know I'm in a very small minority, and am happy it brings so much joy to so many people.
I was 6 and have been a big fan ever since. Im 56 this year ❤
This song's history and impact is one for the books.
Eurovision.
This was Abbas big break. They won the Eurovision song contest with this song in 1974.
Yes, and they also tried to get to Eurovision the year before, with "Ring Ring" :)

Napoleon was defeated at Waterloo. In a similar way, a woman (as a role of Napoleon) gives in and falls in love with a man. He is her “Waterloo”.
Great Song! One Of Eurovision Most Iconic & Remembered Songs! ABBA Are Timeless!
This is their first hit that I remember as a kid. The rest is history. They just kept turning out great song after great song.

To meet your 'Waterloo' is a metaphor for someone suffering their final defeat......as it was for Napoleon at 'The Battle Of Waterloo' !
Yh but the songs about fighting about falling in love like can’t resist it

Yeah and shame on the UK for giving this song zero points at Eurovision
Abba you owe me one, head over heels, should I laugh or cry, hole in your soul (live) please :)
🧡 ABBA!
🧡 Cher too. Waterloo. It was, is, a song that pulled you to the dance floor. Heaven help you if you were stuck in your car while listening to this.
Thanks, Dereck.
Sitting In The Palm Tree
totally under the radar standout album track from Waterloo album
I saw those Eurovision outfits a couple of years ago at an ABBA exhibition in London, Agnetha's famous Blue-sequinned skull cap was under glass !! lol ( I did try to steal it !! )
I ABBA-ABSOLUTELY LOVE THIS SONG!!!!
this is where it all began...
They won the Eurovision song contest in 1972 performing Waterloo and this put them on the map hence all the great ABBA song's that stemmed from this.
You mean 1974.
The 1972 contest was won by Luxembourg with Aprez toi
The winner of Eurovision 1974!
If you to face a very complicated situation, like an astronaut in Ridley Scott's movie The Martian (the song plays in this movie), try "Waterloo", to escape your own Waterloo

Good spot re eyeliner. Glam rock was huge in the UK 71-74. T rex, sweet etc👍

As far as videos go, I think "Money Money Money" is their best
all of there videos were inventive at the time and were ahead of other artists
Every ABBA song is great
The King Kong Song is on this Album and you need, need, need to react to it!! It's a very fun song!! I know that you would enjoy it!!!
Bjorn has often said that the outfit he wore was so tight that he couldn’t sit down.
Do more ABBA reactions, can never go wrong reacting to the greatest group that ever existed and their timeless music...:)...a tip..do some of their more underreated and unknow songs too..like Rock Me..Man in the middle... Watch Out...What about Livingstone..songs like those..
Waterloo is a fine piece of glam pop, but it was with SOS (1975) that they found their true sound, that mix of melancholia and euphoria.
They filmed this 2 months after the Eurovision Song Contest, and after the song had gone to number 1 in several countries
I wish you had used the live Eurovision performance. It was so exciting and you can sense what was to come.
You should try ‘Ring, Ring’. ABBA will always stay as a classic and successful pop group! ABBA forever!!
If you notice...in the majority of their “up tempo”songs...Agnetha and Anni-Frid don’t really move a lot...even though the majority of the time the tempo and the beat really warrant dancing and moving around....as did the time in which these songs were released and popular....
ABBA is the original creator of this song.....Cher just covered it.
Hi from... Waterloo, Belgium (the real one) ;)
Benny’s keyboard track is great on this song as it is on so many of their songs. ABBA used the keyboard for rythym back up as much as they did guitars. I think this gives ABBA songs an inviting warm quality as opposed to a possible harder edge with what could occur with overuse of guitars.

I still can't believe the UK gave this entry Zero points on the night.
Have the UK ever got anything right in the eurovision? Just asking...

Dereck, need play all 8 albums of ABBA,
React to The Way Old Friends Do (Live at Wembley 1979). Totally love and raw vocals and I think the words are so touching.

You should listen to the live at Eurovision version where they won.
Cher killed this, but in the opposite meaning of the word...EVERYONE wore eyeliner in 1974 (so I've been told).
You look handsome with the cap it suits you 👍
Voted the best Euro vision song ever :)
1974 eurovision winner
More ABBA..... reactions.. react to one of their spanish songs. React to The Day Before you Came, Eagle, When All is Said and Done, Under Attack, Money, Money, Money.
Can you make an album review of one of ABBAs Albums? Like "Voulez-Vous", "Super Trouper", "The Visitors",... 😍😍
Cher....Cher......Cher......Cher 🇨🇱💜🙏🥰
Watch the 1974 Eurovision ABBA contest video, it's much more entertaining.
The pillow's color behind your head isn't correct wrt to green-screen (it appears transparent). I think it's probably a simple careless mistake, but since you also look quite tired in this video, I guess you were going through some rough times at this point in the day? (too many records maybe)

Lame video takes away from the beauty of their first hit wonderful stuff love you
I came here from Euphoria
Please don't stop the video so often, it destroy the whole atmosphere of the song. I've noticed that in several videos of you. Let the song work on you and then tell. And thanks for responding to Abba. :-)
It is annoying when a reactor stops the song every 10 seconds
The many stops keeps the video from being taken down for copyright reasons.
Nah, it's a reaction video! If i want to experience the full video I can watch the original.
The Glam fashion! 💖🔥
can you make a reaction to abba ring ring

I really enjoy your reactions. Please react to Total Eclpse Of The Heart by Bonnie Tyler
Ich liebe dein Feedback, wünsche mir deine Meinung zu Agnetha's Song "The Angels Cry"
Is there any chance you can stop interrupting the song so much? Take notes if something pops in your head? It just ruins the experience, just saying.
Cher's version :) :)
why not try a different swedish group like Roxette?
Dungen and Kent + even The Nomads are more creative Roxette which only had one really good singer ,rest was meh and forgettble
You talk a lot ... fall
Derek you are really ridiculous
