    Planning on an RV trip to Newfoundland this summer.........our fourth trip to the Rock. Learned about Burgeo and Sandbanks from your tour.......thanks for that. Likely won't make that leg.......the road condition and our RV too large for Sandbanks. Nice to see and learn more about your beautiful province. Newfoundland seems to have no bugs because usually there is wind.

      I know the road is getting better, but easier to dodge the potholes and the rough shoulders on a bike than with an RV. If you haven't seen my recent series of Octoberrrr camping, you might want to look at it. I went down to Harbour Breton for the first time and loved the area. Roads are really good and it is a beautiful area with a few interesting fishing ports. There is a small municipal RV campground that I stayed at that could probably take any rig. I'm going to be exploring even more of the province this coming summer.

      I try to ride down to Burgeo every 2nd year. Most times it is just a day trip but I had a great camping trip down just after I got the trailer. Sandbanks is a wonderful little park. I've only been to Twillingate once, camping at Dildo Run... will definitely be back again. Thanks for watching and commenting.

    Great video buddy, I’m hoping to take my bike from Moncton to burgeons when covid is gone. Do you recommend anywhere in particular to stay night in burgeons? Thanks.

      Gillett's Motel is the only motel in Burgeo but there are a few B&Bs. If you are camping, Sandbanks Provincial Park is great but small and you should try to reserve ahead as it is full most of the summer. Here's the first camping trip for me hauling my tent trailer down to Sandbanks. It's quiet in September lol. th-cam.com/video/N8hkWw55uNg/w-d-xo.html

    We went down there last year in our motorhome, broke a belt in the tire Rough going, the roads definitely need upgrading.

      I go down every couple of years and for every section they patch a new section gets worse. The edge of the pavement is so chewed up. A little easier in some ways on the bike but the last time I did it I was hauling my tent trailer and had to be doubly attentive to the road. Still, I love Burgeo and Sandbanks Park.

    I'm from Newfoundland and never ever been to Burgeo. I had a good friend from there, but never made the trek. After watching this I will for sure make it someday.

      It's a great run down, just watch for potholes. I did a video of going down to Sandbanks Provincial Park and camping last September. Great park to visit.

    I thought the reduced sound level was great. At first, I wondered if you were riding a bicycle, which would be a very healthy way to travel, but make for a long, long, round trip. Except you could throw the bike on a ferry and be back home very easily. LOL
    The classical music in the background was nice, and your voice, which was educational, in that I've never been down that road, was at a good level, and pleasant, as if you were a public speaker or educator in a previous life.
    Where I live at the Maine/New Brunswick border, Interstate 95, and State Route 9, in Maine, has the same long stretches and views. I guess whenever you can build a highway through empty forest (no cities or towns or farms, ranches, etc.), you can mostly make it as straight as you want?
    I was a visitor/hitchhiker in 1974, when half of the outports were full, when cod fishing was still going strong, and the ferries had a busy schedule along the South Coast. I took the ferry from Terrenceville to Port Aux Basques, about a 30 hour journey.
    I'm not sure if this road was available back then, but most likely, if so, it wasn't so nicely paved.

      I tried a bicycle for a few months when in my 40's... scared the crap out of me to get to 80 kph with no brakes to speak of.

      I passed thru Maine a few times in the past year.. Came thru a year ago on the bike and dealt with snow. Part of last year's :Octobrrrr Adventure" I try to use I95 as little as possible. Camped in Acadia National Park this past spring. Camped a couple of times in Millinocket (actually just editing that leg of this trip ) and then came down Hwy. 11 to meet 2 in Skowhegan? I'll try to keep a bike on the road for a few years yet to come.
      We don't have as many coastal ferries running these days but I think you can get from Burgeo to the Burin Peninsula still with a number of stops in isolated (no road) communities.

    The highway to Burgeo was I beleive built around 1980 . Before that boat of plane was the only way to get there unless you walked . In that case the flies will ave ye eat . I saw some caribou on the way down to a place called Star lake . I always wondered how they could run like that over the uneven ground and not break an ankle . One problem with new roads is once they are built people can get into these remote areas and take all the trout eels and salmon out of the lakes and rivers .

    • @OldGuyonaBike
      @OldGuyonaBike  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Anything close to a road gets fished out pretty quick. I do believe that there are long sections of the road with some of that 1980s pavement still on it. I do like visiting Burgeo, but that road is rough.

      Oh my, this is an old video. I try to get down to Burgeo every couple of years. Last time was the first outing with my Mini Mate camper and that video is in the 2018 series. Burgeo and Sandbanks Provincial Park are greatr to visit. Road has been getting better but you still have to pay attention for potholes.

    • @mrceleb2006
      @mrceleb2006 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      ...and it's incredible there's only one gas station on the entire road!

    • @OldGuyonaBike
      @OldGuyonaBike  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@mrceleb2006 Not a place for a peanut tank. If I am light on the throttle, I can make it from Corner Brook to Burgeo and back on one tank (29 litres) but I am rarely light on the throttle lol. I always gas up in Burgeo. I know I would not make it when hauling the trailer.

    The good ol Burgeo road. Famous for the damage it does to vehicles. We once had a band come to play at the school in a big bus with all kinds of equipment and they broke a stage light just trying to get across that road!

    • @OldGuyonaBike
      @OldGuyonaBike  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I am sure 99% of the road has not been touched since that band went thru. The other 1% are washed out sections that they had no choice but to touch. With care, it might actually be easier for a motorcycle to transverse it. That video was from 2015... I may be foolish enough to try it again this summer.

    • @bradymercermusic
      @bradymercermusic 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Haha, two years ago as of today. Yep, the gov of NL refuses to fix that damn road. It's only getting worse too. I'm living in BC now so I don't have to deal with it anymore but I always get really worried when a family member has to take the road out to Corner Brook or something, somebody could get seriously hurt!

    That un-named settlement is called Peter Strides. I flew out of there with Brophy & Sons to hunt moose.

    • @OldGuyonaBike
      @OldGuyonaBike  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes... I could not find a name for it when I did the video in 2016. It still does not show up on Google maps if you just look at the highway but if you ask for directions to Peter Strides it will give you the Peter Strides Seaplane Base. So, if you know where you're going, it will show you the way.

  • @billdang3953
    @billdang3953 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Liked the video. Parts of the highway look pretty good, other parts look like the infamous thin membrane surface Saskatchewan highways (broken and missing pavement). Given that this is a sparsely travelled and isolated Newfoundland highway, maybe this is to be expected.

    • @OldGuyonaBike
      @OldGuyonaBike  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      This is one of the loneliest stretches of highway in the province. I go down there every 2nd year and it's spotty. My first real camping weekend with the trailer (2018) I went down and then had to watch even more for the potholes but it wasn't too bad. th-cam.com/video/N8hkWw55uNg/w-d-xo.html
