Bachmann NYC J3A Hudson w/ TCS Wowsound- Running Overview

  • Taking the latest steam from Bachmann out for some break in mileage!
    Overall, very satisfied with this engine out of the gate- Sounds are awesome, runs very well and weighs a ton. In a side by side, the engine alone weighs more than the BLI Vanderbilt in the opening- even if it's got the less smooth drive between the two. Engine handled the train with ease, only slipping if things got caught on a funky point on layout.

    I didn’t expect this to be such a great model, glad I was wrong. The sound decoder makes this thing amazing in comparison to more expensive brands. We often forget that these less costly models are essentially a blank canvas for the modeler to improve with detail parts to his/her desire which was the norm 25-35 years ago.
    Great job on the chase scenes, this allowed me to see in detail how the rods behaved. Thanks for taking time to make and post this for us.

It can pull a good amount of passenger cars, and all while looking and sounding impressive. It’s BLI that should be shaking in their boots. Their Hudsons were the crème of the crop, now these pop up and Bachmann’s making the Dreyfus on top of that. Only one BLI will have proper claim to now is the Commodore Vanderbilt.

    Very impressive NYC j3a Hudson locomotive model from Bachmann, these Hudson type engines were an impressive design for passenger service and the NYC was the first railroad to purchase a Hudson type locomotive. This Bachmann j3a engine has a similar appearance to the Broadway limited class j1e Hudson engines, I wonder which engine has more weight the Bachmann model or the BLI model. I would love to see BLI produce a new release of the j1e Hudson engines again in the future at some point, great locomotive & passenger train consist- Tom.

    • @SCL3618
      @SCL3618  ปีที่แล้ว

      The Bachmann hands down weighs more than the BLI. I've got one of the Paragon 1 era J1's, still a good engine but definently could use a refresh. Hopefully more cars will come on the market, it took a while to get a suitable train built for this. Thanks for watching!

    I've been wanting one of these for a long time, but I run Atlas code 100 with #4 turnouts, and 18 inch radius. All of which work well with my BLI locomotives, but I'm not too sure how well this one would respond. It looks like it is very demanding of high quality track. That looks like a very nice layout.

    • @SCL3618
      @SCL3618  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Code 100 would be just fine, but you'd likely need 22 for it to be comfortable. That said, it may be able to squeeze 18 on anything but S curves.

    It is a shame we couldnt see it running at ss 1. Any locomotive will run ok, at speed, but at slow speed, sorts the "men from the boys".It is a nice looking loco, but does it have the slow speed, to match.?I have a few Bachman locos, of varousages, & they all do well, especially, if they have a good decoder, in them.

    • @SCL3618
      @SCL3618  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That goes out the window a bit when the model in question is a mid-high speed prototype. Slow speed crawling is burning footage when people want to see it tracking at speed instead of barely moving like in most overviews. Engine runs fine on the low end, but it doesn't need as fine of a slow speed compared to yard power. The TCS decoders can be adjusted for plenty of low end momentum, but speed table out of the box is aimed at hustling out.

    • @SCL3618
      @SCL3618  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Momentum on the decoder can be adjusted, out of the box it's aimed at being a faster responding all arounder, which was greatly appreciated in filming. Momentum can easily be adjusted to slow down acceleration and stopping, though I prefer the default setup for running and creating content.
