When i was a kid you had to camp out to look after it or the next estate would torch it. Sad as because you don't see it in Manchester anymore. They Manchester council started Wythenshawe park massive bombfire that stopped all the community ones . So that carried on for 20 year and now they say " we've got no money now " . As ive got older now i see how they have intentionally or not killed community's in so many ways.
I was just asking the lady at my local shop if bonfires like this still went on (tonight where I live I've never seen so many fireworks across the town - it was literally 360 from 5-7pm), she told me no, bemoaning health and safety! Must be just round here - they've always been a miserable bunch compared to the north west!
To be fair to our community though, over the last few years it's started to come together again over festivities - I've never seen as many trick or treaters before (loads more than when I was a kid in the 80's) - and I always scoff when I hear people say that kids don't play outside on their bikes these days, because where I live they are out everyday!!!
Yes mate it went on for weeks all the local kids knocking on doors or clearing wood for the bommy (maybe even remove a fence or two!) then leave a couple kids on guard whilst your out looking for more wood or you'd come back and the rats from the next street had lit it! After the fireworks became big the local authorities stopped the bonfires and at the same time the commercial side I e the shops ramped up Halloween cos there's money in that and they couldn't sell fireworks to kids (understandable) I loved bonfire night it was free fun included everyone and was a uniquely British day but don't worry you can spend loads on Halloween/valentine's day/mother's day /evening Xmas they won't go away like I said there's money in them!

My mum grew up up in Birkenhead in the early 50’s, her house would have been opposite Primark, where the Pyramids has been built, she said it was lovely, she doesn’t go back as it’s a mess
I remember buying a fiesta rs turbo from Birkenhead about 1996/97! We met the seller in the town centre and we went to their house to sort out the sale, i was surprised how nice it was round there, just like Brookside! And the people were sound as well!
I love that bonfire rivalry is still a thing, takes me back to being a kid in the 80s and the determination to get out collecting wood before others got there 😂😂

The "blood bucket", a pub you drank in if you were addicted to violence😳 I was fortunate to get out of there & find work abroad & make a decent living for my family & myself.
