  • I explain why I'm not currently an airline pilot and how I love being a corporate pilot. We fly from Columbus to Louisville, then down to Tampa and back to Columbus. The weather was great and it was an excellent day in the life of this pilot.
Corporate flying is just so much fun.

I fly for airline. F/O says "look at that tiny corporate jet over there. I'm glad I am not flying that thing." I replied, "those guys are probably eating fine catering, have a rental car waiting at the FBO, and stay in great hotels while we have peanuts, crappy coffee, continental breakfast, and a hotel shuttle van that smells like a locker room." The right corporate gig can be wonderful!!

Not always bad being with an airline, I work for an airline (not a pilot, mech) and recently in Tel Aviv (I was on vacation so I was paying) the crews hotel was right across the street from where I stayed, they stayed in $340 a night rooms. One of the advantages of airline Vs small corp. jet pilot, Don't think you will be making many trips to Israel. Also I fly free just about anytime and anywhere in the world. Even if I want to go where my airline doesn't fly I get 90% off on most other airlines, domestic and international. You are limited (I think) to where your trips take you. They each have their good and bad but in general it's a great industry to be a part of.

Gamebreaker08 , In the end, it isn't the size of the plane that matters. It is how well you operate it. Planes all fly in the same air. Besides, compared to the sky, even the A-380 is small. Do what makes you happy. I still believe the J-3 cub is about the most enjoyable plane on the planet.

"....'the grass is always greener'".... After 20 years flying corporate, I love my airline job! I don't have to huck bags, dump lavs or deal with whiny, affluent, middle-aged toddlers. When I get to the aircraft I walk straight to the cockpit and just fly the plane. 'Couldn't be happier!

From an airline guy, first I have to say, your landings are SWEET! Beautiful, beautiful job. I've been flying with one of the big 3 for 35 years, and wondered from time to time what your lifestyle and job satisfaction is. I've often thought that if you work for a great family/boss it could be one of the best jobs out there. Flying amazing equipment and feeling like you're part of a close knit team. That said, I'm guessing that set up is kind of rare. On our side, there are some big pluses; Job security once you've got some seniority, control of your schedule, vacation, sick leave, generous 401K contributions, flying all over the world with a few longer layovers here and there, to enjoy it. The all nighters suck (pretty common on the widebodies) as does the commute (my fault...lol) You're pretty much "just a number" when it comes to your job. Co workers are usually enjoyable, but not a lot of long term friendships, as everyone is usually on different life paths and tend to do their own thing, especially on domestic layovers. As someone mentioned, seniority is king. If you do tire of your cool ride, try to make the jump at the beginning of a hiring cycle. (our list will lose about 1/2 of the pilots in the next 10 years due to forced retirements. Lots of movement once were past the Covid craziness). Thanks for the video! Loved it.

Thanks for the positive comment Rick! I think someone said “the grass isn’t greener, it’s just different”. A part of me would love to have that airline experience and the perks you enjoy and all that comes with the airline environment. Fortunately I’m at one those nice family owned been around 100 years operations that it’s hard to justify working holidays with young kids and commuting. Maybe someday when the kids are older I’ll get that chance.

Corporate definitely has some advantages. The disadvantages are that it's easy to lose your job (either by the company deciding to sell the jet or simply pissing off the boss). There isn't much job security, and the pay (and days off) are usually MUCH worse in the corporate world. I typically get 17 days off per month and have 35 days vacation on top of that (working for a major U.S. airline). Many of my corporate buddies don't have any set days off…they get to be home if the boss doesn't feel like flying somewhere that day. The atmosphere (and respect) is totally different too. I've had kids ask for my autograph in the terminal. Flying corporate, you get more "hey boy…get my bags". Thinking that sitting in a hotel for 3 days is a "treat" will get old too. Especially when you get married and have some kids. For your stage of life, corporate seems like a perfect fit. If you EVER consider going to an airline, you need to pursue it vigorously. Seniority is EVERYTHING and controls your quality of life.

Thanks for some perspective. This video was a bit confused in that its premise was that he is happy doing what he does but then he revealed he had applied/a standing application for an airline. I didn't get why that had been done.

My airline went through bankruptcy, but I never missed a paycheck. I agree that the industry is unpredictable and hard at times. Pan Am was 30 years ago. Not many airlines have shut down since then. Many have just been acquired by the "big 3" (TWA, USAir, Continental, Northwest, etc.)

Thanks very much. One correction….hedge funds are not helping these companies. We have spent BILLIONS of dollars doing stock buy backs in the last couple years to appease the hedge funds. They are forcing us to waste money on buying our own stock. That is not helpful (in my opinion). They are not giving us money, they are just buying our stock and taking over some of the decision making.

It depends on the flying and the airline...you can typically find one that suits you. I flew night freight for two years and liked it well enough, passengers for nine years and didn't care for it. Flying heavy freight for about two years now and I'm a huge fan.
It's all about finding what you like, and doing it.

I can't think of any aviation vloggers who work for a 121 carrier. It would be extremely difficult, due to the part 121 regs. In addition, all the major airlines are very protective and controlling when it comes to their image. You can see evidence of this in how pilots for airlines post flying videos. 99% have no identifying ATC audio or their faces in the video. They also tend to post a few videos and suddenly stop. Now that I'm thinking about it, I can only think of a handful of aviation vloggers who are vlogging as professional pilots at work. One of which is the creator of this video. I have to confess, you did knock this one out of the ball park.

It is fine playing around with toys whilst you are young, but when you get a little older, and it is too late to join an airline, or at least have a command in an airline. You will wish that the big juicy 'Heavy' over there, going to Cape Town for a 4 Day layover was yours. All paperwork/flight plans, coach to the aircraft, catering (not your problem), fuel all arranged, coach to nice hotel, and the rest. Then I see a corporate pilot looking for passengers and problems as your vlog shows. Your choice, but the best thing I did was join a major airline.

I'm planning on joining the Air Force as I want to be a fighter pilot some day. I was wondering if you would recommend getting my PPL first. Do you think that would weigh into being picked as a pilot in the Air Force?

    • @oskarniessen7493
      @oskarniessen7493 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Mr. Vibes Hey there, I'm sorry if this isn't what you wanted to hear, but personally I don't think having a PPL would help you get into the Air Force, as quite frankly anybody can be trained to be a pilot to a PPL standard, and regardless of whether you've got a PPL, you'll still undergo the same training as somebody who's never sat in a plane! Hence no extra cost is being spent by the military on somebody with prior experience. There are so many different factors that make a fighter pilot - good problem solving, good maths skills, spatial awareness (judgement), medical condition and attitude. This means that regardless of whether you've got a PPL or not, if you can't demonstrate the qualities that they're after, you're going to struggle to persuade them to let you in. However, do I think you should get a PPL? YES!!! Flying is the best fun you can have with your clothes on ;) and despite what I've said it certainly won't hurt you if you want to join the airforce. Idk where you're located, but (especially) in the UK gliding is a very affordable way into flying for younger pilots and will almost certainly make you a better bare-bones stick and rudder pilot than our powered equivalents! Anyway have fun, stay safe and good luck joining the Air Force!

I’ve done a lot of both; corporate and airline. There is no single right answer, direction or choice for everyone. Either one can be a dream job, either one can be a nightmare. Six months after voluntarily departing a Fortune 500 corporate flight department for an airline job, the company leadership changed and the new leaders sold half the corporate fleet then fired half the pilots and mechanics. On the other hand I’ve been furloughed twice in the airline business. Fortune 500 and elite passengers can be some of the nicest, accomplished and most interesting people. Same with the airline. The passenger seated next to me on one of my commercial flights (I am seated in the back) owned a company that manufactured submarines for the ultra-rich to go along with their mega yachts and research/education institutions. What a fascinating hour or so listening to him talk about the ocean. But you can have a rough experience with a passenger at either place. At the airline I don’t have to spend nearly as much energy on fuel, catering and dispatch that is taken care of for me by others in the airline. When I set the parking brake I really walk away. No so with the corporate jet. Either job can be a blast or a drag. Sometimes it’s just what you make of it. As far as pay is concerned I’ve found the airline is much more lucrative. I miss the comradery of the corporate flight department vs the thousands on the seniority list at the airline. I am happy my career has spanned both of these worlds. The Union contract offers much protection not available in the corporate world. If one does go airline then seniority is very important, so spending any extra time somewhere else will significantly cost you career wise if you do make the jump. The corporate equipment (jets) is nicer, although we are profitable and buying new jets all the time at the airline. “First Class” at the airline really does not compare favorably with a typical G-6, Falcon 900 series passenger experience. I understand there is a wide variety of corporate flight departments and other’s experiences will be different than mine. Same can be said of the airline experience. If you are happy and love your job then the grass may not be greener flying 121 for some mega carrier. Of the two pilot careers corporate vs airline, for me the airline is a much better job and I had a great corporate job. But that is just my experience not career advice for anybody else.

    • @apackwestbound5946
      @apackwestbound5946 7 ปีที่แล้ว

One other thought regarding the quality of pilot working at the corporate flight department vs line flying at the airline. No clear answer there and I would disagree with anybody who says one group is a better pilot group than the other. I’ve seen excellence at both places. The line pilot usually flies much more than the corporate pilot. In my case it was about 400 hours a year at the corporate flight department vs 800-900 hours at the airline (I work a lot). The flight training I got at FlightSafety and other training companies with the corporate job* was very good, as is the training department at the 121 airline I work for. You will find excellence in both places. Unfortunately one can find examples in both worlds where the crew failed miserably. I’ve been in both flight decks and heard the other pilot disparage the crew of the other half of the discussion; corporate this/airline that. Either one can be a master of the equipment and environment pulling off an impressive flight under difficult circumstances. Neither is immune to having a bad day or having the airplane end up in some undesirable condition.
Some of my best memories were being an FO flying with a Vietnam era Navy pilot (now retired) at the fortune 500 company. I learned a lot from those thoroughly enjoyable trips having a blast rocketing around North America, Canada and Mexico. In any case have a safe, profitable and wonderful career wherever you end up. Thank you for the informative and entertaining videos.
      Respectfully,
      • I realize there is a wide range of experiences in the corporate world and I cannot generalize about every corporate job based on what I experienced.

Retired corporate pilot here. Just retired two weeks ago after doing it for close to forty years. I was still a newbie!!
I had a long and interesting career doing such. I wouldn't have traded it for the world.
One aspect of being a airframe and power plant mechanic, me, as well as being a pilot, I always knew the condition of my plane, better than anyone. Airline pilots don't have a clue in that regards.

Flying corporate and flying airline each has advantages and disadvantages. Married pilots may find airline flying a bit more predictable in terms of pay and schedule so they can have more time at home. By the same token, corporate flying has appeal for the reasons the pilot in this video cited. Some corporate jobs may be more airline-like, too, if they fly a company airplane and have a lot of same-day round trips or RON flights. Another thing that appeals to some corporate pilots (as was mentioned in someone else's video) is the corporate pilot is more intimately involved in all aspects of the operation. The pilot and co-pilot are "it;" no ramp crew, customer service, etc.

My dad was sent to the Dominican Republic in 1965 and spent a tour of duty there. He was a load master on the C-130's. He was in the first wave to land. He was haustling cargo and munitions for 36 hours straight on the first day there. Having recently made the jump from corporate to airline, i concur, corporate was more fun and the lifestyle was way better. That being said, airline is a more steady job, the pay is better and there are less cowboys around. I miss corporate flying but i don't think i will go back to it.

  • @jungedrache

It depends totally on the Company you work for. When I used to be a corporate pilot, they would call us weekends wanting to go fly in 2 hours. So I had to carry a set of clean uniform in my car alongside with clothes for 5 days because we never knew when would be back. Preparing flight plan, briefing, calling for fuel, all enroute to the airport. After everyflight cleaning the airplane because the owners didn't like to see a fingerprint anywhere and didn't want to pay someone to do it. Quite stressful...
The only thing "Cool" is that you never know where are you going to have dinner that evening and the destinations are as wild as the owners needs and imagination.

Fantastic video! I spent over two decades in the airline industry and would consider it to have been a great experience overall. Unfortunately, today's environment is a much different story. There are far too many reasons to list but you can just go to most any pilot forum and figure those out. My opinion: stay where you're at as long as you're happy and have job security.

The way I see it is if you enjoy it then you don't have to apologize to anyone about not being an airline pilot. I'm an airline pilot and honestly, if I could move into a good corporate gig with pay/benefits close to hat I have now with the QOL, I would likely do it. but I can't give up a fixed schedule with 18-20 off every month. If you like it, keep doing it.

It also helps that you have a friendly, positive attitude to go with it. I know people who can have the best situations in life and screw them up because they're jerks, and insist on bringing themselves and everyone else around them down.
I also know people who pump out porta-potties for a living, and love it because they can listen to their favorite CD's in the truck. It's all what you make of it.

FWIW, Im working, in a hotel or in training 12 days a month. The other 18 days at home with the family. I like the exciting places I get to go to with my hand picked crew. Pay is above airline schedule and thats a first in the aviation world.

  • @flynomo

Normally wouldn't say anything, but I felt I needed to correct a few things: 1) I've flown ALL over the world for free with very little trouble. 2) 16+ days off a month @ $170k/ year. Plenty of time to golf on my own dime. When on the road, I work. When I'm off, I'm off; not wondering if there will be a pop up. Done both. Prefer airlines by a mile. Seriously Not sure I'd let Delta view this video. Might kill your chances.

From the video, it looks like you make really smooth landings. I'm autistic, so that helps a lot. I was on a flight from Hayden, CO to Denver and we slammed so hard on the runway in Denver, It hurt my back. I was just sure we blew a tire. To be fair, it was in a snowstorm and Maybe we were lucky to be alive at that point. I didn't complain. I figure if you can walk away from it, it's good enough.

No. It is not a public carrier. Corporate flying is when you fly for some rich guy that owns a plane and fly him to wherever he's going, kinda like hiring a chauffeur to drive your car to wherever you're going.

I fly for the regionals and I've only been in the biz for a few years now, I live at base which is great and I'm not on reserve which is also great, but the benefits and the privileges we get i'm finding are limited. Flying for free isn't so free, it still comes at a cost, and in the airline biz the airlines aren't there to meet your needs on QOL but the other way around. I like the flying snd the pay is getting better pretty much thru out the industry. How hard is it ti get a corporate job and how often do you a fly a month? I hear its pretty much on demand. Are Yall tied to the 117 rules also. Just curious about the corp side of it, appreciate any info.

Hey what's up man, I'm a new sub! I stumbled upon your channel by accident and it's pretty awesome. I have a few questions if you don't mind.
    1. The count down (100, 50, 40, 30, 20, 10) when you're landing, what is that? I assume it's distance from the ground right? Is that in feet, meters?
    2. When you speed up your videos for a time lapse, how fast is it sped up? 5x, 20x, 30x?
    3. What are all the knobs on the dashboard (not sure if it's called a dashboard on a plane) that your co-pilot keeps adjusting during flight for?
    Thanks!
