How to mount a small riding mower tire. Very easy method.

- Small tires can be very challenging to remove and mount to a wheel. This method works well for small tires that will not fit on a tire machine.
Tools needed:
*Vise
*Steel rod that fits inside the hub wheel and is long enough to give about 6 or more inches above the wheel's side when mounted on the vise.
* 2 sets of Vise grip pliers
* Long flat screw driver or flat bar.
* Wd40 or equivalent, or soapy water.
The smaller vise grips I use in the video to grip the wheels rim are ground smooth to keep from cutting into the tire as I spin it around the wheel.
After installing the new tire, and you're having trouble getting the tire to air up/ beads to seat, use a ratchet strap around the center of the tire to squeeze the tire and the beads will expand out to make contact with the wheel rim. Add some air gradually and remove the ratchet strap while slowly and carefully adding air.
These tires usually only need 14 psi.

that is slicker than cow poop !
There have to be hundreds of videos on TH-cam showing how to mount a new tractor tire, but yours is hands down the best there is. So simple, so easy. The best part is, no games or nonsense in your video, just simple instructions. Thanks so much, you are a TH-cam gem!
Wow, thanks!
I second that @@Mechanical_Mind
I third that. THIS is the video I was looking for.
Agreed. Not a bunch of wasted time on chatter, just helpful information. Keep up the good work.
@@MyFakeBrand I agree, I've watched several videos and they all struggle with it. this was a straight forward no no nonsense video.
I worked in a tire shop for several years and we'd get the occasional lawn tractor tire that would come in. We always struggled with mounting the new tires! This technique is awesome, and I will be adopting it for my at home DIY projects.
I love learning. At 72, I have struggled with small tires like this for years. The last lawn tractor tire cause me so much grief that I bought a whole new tire and rim assembly. Now I am confident I can salvage the old one. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and experience.
Thank you for sharing the tricks! I was having a terrible time trying to mount my new 15x6-6 tire on the rim. Your rod in the vise method with the vise grips kept everything anchored perfectly. I decided to use some cheap HF tire irons I had already bought and had the tire back on in less than 2 minutes. Much appreciated!!
Great job, it took 2 of us about an hour to finish the job you completed in about 5 minutes! Live and learn folks!
Getting it off the rim is the easy part Getting broken free from the rim is the hard part when they haven't been removed for a long time
That's the first thing I thought when I watched him just wack it off with a hammer in a single hit.
That said I'm impressed with the bar in the middle trick, I usually struggle with dual tire irons working them around to pull the bead over the flange.
Especially ones that are 30 years old, rusted and full of slime. Haha.
Straightforward video with no extraneous unnecessary filler video + easy-to-understand instructions? BE STILL MY HEART!
Every 4-5 years I come back to see how to do this again when my casters wear out. This is by far the best video I've ever seen in 20 years on small tire installation!!!! Thanks a lot. I'll be doing this in the a.m.!
Thanks Toby!
I've been doing this for a while. You put up a nice, easy to follow video! Now show us how to seal the bead on both sides for inflation!!!
Forty plus years of fighting lawn mower tires and I never thought of mounting them on a post. When I saw your bar in the vice, I said that will work just like an old Coates 40-40. Thanks for the idea.
Excellent!!! I fussed with my Deere tractor tire for an hour before I brought it to the local mower mart for them to change it. Next time I can do it myself.
I can't believe what I just saw. That went so fast. I had to check that over a couple of times. Thank you.
I don’t believe I have ever left a comment on a TH-cam video before. DAMN! This worked! I was so frustrated that I was ready to drop $50 on a Harbor Freight small tire changer! This made my afternoon, and I got the lawn cut! Thanks much for this short, sweet and ingenious video!
Thanks Phil!
I had one of their small tire changers to use on go-kart wheels. It wouldn't even break the bead without bending.
Harbor Freight's motto should be: Designed to break, and built to stay that way!
@@davebryant8050 HF sells a set of socket extensions that are extra long. Those are handy, so I bought a set, Thinking what could break. Zero moving parts right? The square end of one just twisted right off. You'd have thought it was made of brass, it was so soft. I don't think the steel had been correctly hardened.
Harbor Freight: Designed to break, and built to stay that way!!!
Coming from someone who has no problem with semi or car/truck tires.....but has literally wrestled with lawnmower tires.....nice tips/video!
Thanks Robert!
The smaller the tyre, the harder they seem to be
One thing I think you forgot. When you go to air it up, sometimes the bead won't settle into the rim and the air just escapes. To remedy this problem, put a belt around the tire at the center of the tread forcing the bead into the rim, then air it up.
Or ratchet strap
Yeah a lot of these videos leave off the air-up step, probably the most difficult step. Wonder why that is?
Your subscribers made the best point of the post. Thanks so much.
great tip
Best tire tractor change video!
Thanx. I never would have considered constructing a tire machine.
yeah, rod in a vise was brilliant, visegrips too. Why couldnt i think iof that on my own is what irritates me
wow!! genius!!! thank you...I'm still dreading putting on new tires ..never did it .....but at least I've got a fighting chance now after seeing your vid!
wow, that was great. I have struggled and struggled with that, and then gave up and paid to have it done. Thanks much!
I am just getting ready to do this myself.
You have probably saved me an enormous amount of frustration.
Thank you!
try breaking the bead loose with a hammer on one that's been on a mower about 20 years, also try it in cold weather
That was my situation, i dropped my snow plow blade on it a few time and that finally did the trick.
Try that hammer trick with old hard and dried tire. It won't happen.
If your vise is big enough use it to break the bead
Well, that was a brilliantly simple, clear and easy to follow demonstration. I’ve saved it for later reference. Needed this a couple of years ago before I bent a wheelbarrow rim and damaged a brand new inner tube.
Best video ever on these small rim tires. I ruined a brand new tire today and bent the rim trying to put the new tire on. Now to order a new tire and wheel already assembled.
Thank you for a really good video on changing these tires. I have been messing with these suckers for close to forty years. Your method is simple and easy.
Thank you many times over!
Of all the tire change video on the internet this is by far the best one!
Thank you so much for taking the time to make this video. I have a commercial grasshopper mid mount lawnmower, and I had a hole in one of the small tires in the front. There were no tire shops open today and I had the tools to do it and a bench with a vice and this really save me a ton of mowing time.thanks again. Awesome video.
Hey brotha, just want to say thanks for shooting this video. I spent the better part of 3 hrs trying to mount a tire with no success. Then I saw your video. Literally 5 minutes to mount the tire. Thanks again!
Great video. Useful and no bullshit. Thank you
*HUGE thanks!!!*
At 74, I had my new tires on inside 1/2 hour!
Subbed!
Thanks for the sub!
Easy when you know how to do it. Thanks for sharing.
Of course, I see this video the very day after I give in, go to Harbor Freight, and buy a mini tire changer. Another set of vise grips would have been so much cheaper.
Thanks for posting. That was so cool!
UPDATE: After trying the "Harbor Freights Way" for about an hour and did nothing but get really, really mad, I watched your video again. I wasn't able to squeeze the little 6-inch tire as you did to get it back on (maybe I could have done it 20 years ago) so, I got 4 Erwin Qwik-Clamps to do that part. 3 or 4 minutes later, the tire was back on. thanks again for posting this video. I'd still be over there, grunting like a crazy man, if you hadn't.
Best video on this often frustrating job. Thanks for not taking 30 minutes or an hour... :)
My hero today doesn't wear a cape. He wears yellow gloves. Thank you.
Excellent! Simple procedure, basic tools, no strain. Appreciate it!
Excellent technique. So much easier than wrestling. Thanks for this!
I just need to leave a comment and say a huge Thank You! I fought with this for way too long but this method is awesome!
Okay now that was slick. I just went out in the shop and tried it thinking it can't be that easy. Wasn't it as easy as you did it but I got it on with no problem thanks
Unbelievable, freaky simple!!! Just did mine with bare hands a vise grip and a small vise, the jaws of which were small enough to grab and lock-down the hub. Thankyou.
Thanks for the tips. I’m partially disabled. This will help a lot.
The best way, I used a piece of rebar and 1 vice grip to keep it from turning, way easier to do standing up at a vice, thanks again.
I put tubes in rotten tires not wanting to pay the price they wanted for new tires. (mower about 30 years old). It took me hours fighting, with tires between my knees. Great video, thank you. @ 72 I can't think like I used to.
I can’t tell how much I appreciate seeing that. Thank you.
Has to be the best lawn tip video I've seen in a long time!
This is by far the best small tire mounting process on YT. Thanks for sharing.
I’ve watched multiple videos trying to do this. This is the smartest easy technique!
Dude! You Rock! I had been trying an old method pretty much all afternoon, and then with yours, I was done in less than 5 min. Thank You!
Haha! Thanks Daniel! I'm glad it helped
Thanks for sharing. I have always struggled with this job. This will help with my upcoming repair on a slow leak.
Thank you I have a tire I need to replace but I have been putting it off because I thought it was going to be a pain, but I watched your video, it was not that bad at all, I appreciate you sir!
Most all round excellence content.time.no excess chatter..on point thank you
Fantastic technique! Thank you for taking the time to make this video! Hugely helpful!
Great display! Thanks! I always remount with a good old fashion tire tube. Even put tubes on car tires if for some reason they have o come off.
Impressively easy on TH-cam 😅 I will try that when I receive my new tires.
It helped me tremendously thank you 🙏🏽 and May God continue to bless you.
Very helpful, thanks!
This was excellent. I’ve been beating my brains out getting the tire back on.
No doubt..me too !
after mounting 245/35r19' zr rating last weekend....and this was the first time I ever did this at the age of 41 LOL thanks for the upload. worked pretty good! except I took out the grease fitting. It was way too tall. Just lightly tapped it, and back in business
This how too show is 5 star thank you.
Great video. I'm getting ready to replace all 4 tires on my riding mower. Thanks
Tried for hours on a small rigid lawnmower tire. Used this method and was on in five minutes.
These are the type of comments I love reading!
best how to on small tire r and r ever! thank you Sir
Great idea and very useful to me. We have a lot of thorny bushes and trees here in OK and constantly have to remove and patch these tires. This will speed up and make the tire changes much easier. Grazie!
Glad it was helpful!
Wow…hands down the best way to do it!!!!!! Thank you so much
Thank you for a great and simple video!
Well done. Reminds me of working in a tire shop using a Coates 40 40.
That's the slickest and fastest tire change I ever seen 😅
I tried this, it worked amazing. Thank you!
Wow, I have wrestled getting my tire on! Thanks!
Did it work for you?
Same as above wrestled to get my tire on. Used your trick to squeeze down on the tire, wow it works, Thank You.
amazing- thanks for this, should have found this couple of hours ago.
Interesting. Thank you for the explanation. I take it you know what you’re talking about.
From my point of view the naming of the rim correlates to if I would say shop on Amazon and wanted to upgrade rims on my truck, that would be the common description used for the metal part, similar with tires, just the rubber part and lastly buying wheels for a trailer or golf cart, wheels would get me new tires with rims.
Thank you sir. Awesome demo!
Thanks for sharing your knowledge 👍
Your a gem mate, looks straight forward, thanks
That's quality simple DIY
Thankd
It's been awhile since you posted. I think that thing is called the valve stem core. Great video. I'm saving your video for next summer. 👍🏼
Great job man thank you
Great job thanks really just getting ready to do my tears o mower feel a lot more confident now
Thanks, I'll be giving it a shot this weekend., the WD-40 tip seems to be a key factor
Watched a few vid on this, yours is by far the best. Thanks for the tips. Best regards to you and your channel.
Great no nonsense video on how to change small tire, only thing I would add, don't use a screwdriver, buy a tire iron aka tire spoon. there only about $7.00 at Harbor Freight.
Excellent video, helped me greatly! Thank you.👊🏼
Exceptionally well done.
Great video. Thanks for doing it. Keep up the good work.
Great video thank you for sharing this with us 🙏
A true pro ! excellent job.
Back in the late 70's I worked in a body shop/ used car lot, and they had a manual tire remover that I used on occasion that worked on the same principal. I don't remember exactly how it kept the tire stationary. It was quite a chore getting 14 and 15 inch tires off the rims.
Nice job. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you for this, saved my day 🙏
Glad it helped!
Good stuff! I appreciate your helpful video.
Bro best advice ever saved me so much
Thank you so much for an EXCELLENT Video. I need to change one on my John Deere Riding Lawnmower.
Simplified to the bare minimum! Nicely done, and I’m subscribing to your channel!
Thanks for the sub!
valve core is the screw in needle part that goes in the valve stem, great video, impressed
That is the easiest bead breaking I have ever seen.
well sob you made that look easy. I have struggled trying to do that to the point i gave up and just spent $100 for a new tire and mounting. I definitely learned something here today
My man, you just made my day. I've done it before, but struggled
Great video, thank you for your efforts.
Excellent! You are the DUDE!
Thank you sir, that’s a really nice video with some great ideals.
Very good. Thanks.
