Exploring THE DOG Island's unused area - early Rune Cave

- Seeing a whole new area in this game, almost 15 years after it's release, was incredible, so I had to document it somewhere! Unfortunately, you'll have to deal with my voice, but for the world at large to know this exists I'm alright with paying that price. :P
this is an incredible find! glad to see people still care for the dog island in 2021 :D
This is so interesting. Thank you for making The Dog Island content! I've adored this game to bits for, gosh, 12 years or something.
I've had dreams where I've discovered another place in The Dog Island that I've never seen before.
So have I! So it's very cool to see that one really exists.
@@winterdoggo I know! It looks like our dreams came true!
Me as well
@@maisie4506 ö and since you have an aj profile pic; I dreamed of a new animal jam adventure once. I played it in my dream and it was a lot like the tutorial and first adventure for aj made. Then later I went walking around this huge 80s themed mall that somehow looked a lot like the one in FNaF Security Breach despite this being a long time before a teaser was ever released for that game. Then later later.. I was walking on a snowy hill with a city in the distance. It was overcast and my vision was quite obscured due to how much snow was falling down. I found a bench with a girl on it and she offered me some hot cocoa and I accepted it, sitting right next to her. Then I woke up ;-;
Had this dream about 5 or so years ago and I still remember it for some reason
@@somethingwithbungalows That sounds interesting. I kinda had an Animal Jam dream once too but it's kinda hard for me to describe.
oh my god.. seeing people document unused content in The Dog Island is literally a dream come true ;__;
i've always wanted to snoop around in the game files & see what was left over, but never knew where to start !! honestly bless you THIS IS SOOO COOL...
if it's possible too, i'd LOVE to see more scrapped content from this game! it's so mind boggling to me to see people who still care about this game 🥺
This is actually really fascinating! When I finally reached Rune Caverns, I always found it strange how linear it was. It's only purpose is to gatekeep the Ancient Grove. Even the other two canyon areas (Dry valley and Rune canyon) were pretty straightforward design-wise compared to the earlier maps. Which is odd considering these are pretty late game areas. There were definitely a lot of concepts either cut from the final game or simplified to save time, which is a shame. I even recall having a dream once of there being a "true" rune caverns... Looks like it wasn't just a dream after all was it?😅
Anyways I always find these hidden concepts within game files interesting. Never would I have expected that anyone would find something for THIS game! Thanks for sharing this.
Coming from someone who grew up with this game, it’s so cool to see some unused content and early maps. I’d love to know more about it’s hidden / prototype features to see what could have been.
By the way, is this the only unused / early map?
Yeah, me too! This really is a dream come true, and there's definitely more secrets in this game I'm just not skilled/persistent enough to find. A while back, though, someone did figure out how to get in through another entrance so you can walk on the part with the islands in the water and light filtering through - he said you could get down, but couldn't get back up again.
As far as I can tell, yes, this is the only unused one. However, there is one more interesting tidbit with the maps and their files - specifically how they're numbered. Most of the places are put in chronological order for how you encounter them in the game, but Gola Highlands and Chiro Caves are numbered *before* the desert areas. This is actually the same in the Boris fast travel list, which implies to me that at some point Gola and Chiro were meant to be visited earlier in the game, and the closed door were more of a roadblock until a character gave you they key/quest for heavy stones.
(This is also one reason I easily identified this as an early rune caverns I mentioned in the video, another reason being the "title" of the area being Rune Cave in English, and it being Rune Caverns' exact Japanese name in other languages such as French)
Nothing thrilled me more that running into a unused area of my favorite video game, I appreciate your content a lot!
Amazing, thank you for using the camera to look around the corners too! Wish they could have included this map in the final game. it looks so interesting
This is great! I'm glad to see a little something that ended up on the cutting room floor for Dog Island.
I had a thought about that small area of grass surrounded by water. There's a pillar of light shining down onto it. I think if this area was replaced by the small, linear let down in the final game, that the small island would have had something to do with accessing the Grove, whether that be using the Sniff Master Medal there, or the doorway leading to those bees, where you'd be warped to the grove when stepping into the pillar of light. It's a shame we don't know how exactly we would have gotten into the Grove in this version, but it's great to speculate about this kind of thing!
I swear to god I accidently got into this area somehow on a normal play through. And nothing worked like in your video. It scared the shit out of me as a child I thought id uncovered a dark secret LOL
I really wish I had proof. I didn't go further than the crocodile before I backed out like a wuss lol
So awesome to see content of this game still being made, stuff still being discovered! Thank you so much for putting this together and presenting it so that we can all enjoy!
subbed solely on the infinitesimal chance there's more content like this
Hey, thanks for letting me know! Theres no more big unused areas in THE DOG Island, but there's a couple interesting early versions of areas in Petz Catz/Dogz 2 we found in part thanks to the game's very similar structure - as well as entire copies of Green Meadows and Zoomy Lake, probably used as test areas, plus they were used in screenshots sent to news websites, which I guess helps show the speed at which development was being done. Does anything like that sound good?
There's assorted other stuff in there too that I could cover, but I've been so disorganized about this I'll probably forget half of it and not all of it is very interesting :P
that sounds great, any new dog island content or other games, i'll watch anything you upload tbh even if you don't think it would be interesting, like this video is super engaging and well laid out and your voice is so nice that i enabled notification bell which i've only done for like 5 other channels of the 600+ i'm subbed to
@@tfwnoyandere Woah that means a lot actually - thank you so much. I didn't know anyone would feel that way, just figured the value in this came from the new information. I've thought of a few things I could make videos on, both for this game and some others. If I manage to make any more videos, I'll extend thanks to you, because this wouldn't have happened otherwise ^^
you're so welcome i'm excited 🙏
Hi, just to give you an update on the situation: I've collected footage and recorded the narration for the next video now, and all that's left is editing it together - it's the first time I've properly scripted a video, and I'm also putting more work into the editing as well. The biggest battle for this was honestly just finding editing software I could use, but now that I've finally got there, I just have to get the video done.
I'm 2 minutes into a video that's looking like it'll end up about 10, and it's about something else in THE DOG Island that - while not unused - appears to have been skimmed over by most and has more going on than meets the eye. I've also continued to have ideas for other videos, so we'll see how many of those come to fruition in the future.
This is very fascinating, great find
It's amazing how much love the developers packed into this game! Thanks for sharing this.
Omg thank you so much for showing this! This game is one of my favorites and major nostalgia for me, so to see some of this unused content is so cool!
ooooo this is really interesting! makes me wonder if theres out of bounds content for the game
Gracias por este video, siempre quise que hubiera una secuela de este juego mostrando areas que estaban sin explorar de la isla
This area kinda looks like a mine..... maybe it could been an area you fell into after doing the minecart segment at the end of the game?
An interesting idea, but I'd be inclined to disagree. The ID evidence plus the 3 exits, in my eyes, really does point to it just being early rune caverns in a similar position to the one in the final game. If it were connected to the minecart, I'd have thought its ID would be closer to the minecart areas (2700 and 2701), but it's not- and there's no obvious place to have fallen from.
I think the "mine" look was less to connect it to the minecart minigame, and more just a choice they made with the design.
this is SO cool. I had thought that I'd explored everything there was to explore!
Pretty nice map. Maybe the third exit was for the Rune Canyon?
Oh hey, that's a good point. I'm a bit tired atm to think about this properly but I'll get back to you when brain cells have activated
@@winterdoggo and u never did
Whoa this is cool! Never expected to see new Dog Island stuff after all these years. Wonder if the beef jerky was meant to be a key item for a scrapped side quest?
It seems like the sort of item, to me, that was once a healing item - it goes in the normal inventory, and that's even exactly what it is in the "next game in the series" so to speak, Petz Dogz 2 (Wii/PS2).
That said, its lack of function seems to indicate some other purpose...
@@winterdoggo Ahh I see. I haven't gotten too far into Dogz 2 to see it yet in-game. Still interesting tho!
this is incredible to see! dog island was a huge part of my childhood, and its so interesting to see behind the scenes! I also love your inferences about how the map originally was used, when it was made, and the light sources. Great find!
May I ask how you managed to do these file edits? I've been wanting to replay the game, but my wii (which i originally played on back when i was a kid) is broken and I'm looking for some PC options
Thank you for the comment! If you want to replay the game on PC, your best bet is Dolphin Emulator, although if your wii is broken then your only option to get the ROM is sailing the seven seas, so to speak.
Using a program called WiiScrubber, you can copy files out of the game or replace existing ones. I'd recommend making a backup of the game first if you want to do this, or at least of files you intend to tamper with, so you can restore the game to its original state. This is just from memory but it was something like:
"2100.pac" in the "stage" folder is original Rune Cave, so export it. Using a Hex Editor, you should be able to see its ID (2100) somewhere early on in in the file. Replace this with 1100, then replace 1100.pac (Treely Woods) with your edited file. This will put the stage itself in the game in place of Treely Woods like in the video. Enemies, items and the name popup will still match treely woods because they're in other folders, but do some exploring and you can probably find them (and I don't believe those even need to change them in a hex editor - you can just copy them over as-is).
I'm still not sure about how to do environment noises and enemy behaviour, or indeed how to access the map in its proper, in-game state - if that exists at all. The map doesn't seem to have an associated events file, implying if there was code for doors or whatever you did in here, it is lost.
Something discovered since this video is you can access the "other side" (blue room and water you can't enter) by replacing Dry Valley (2000.pac) and entering from North Sandy Desert, and you can access the pretty room with the light filtering down by replacing chiro caves B1 (1500.pac) and entering from Chiro B2.
Hope some of this is interesting ^^
@@winterdoggo Hi, I'm trying to recreate this but there are multiple fields where the ID is present, do I have to change them all??
@@winterdoggo Okay I changed every 2100 for 1100 and it WORKED omg I can't believe it, have you tried the other stage files to see if there's another unused room?
@@floresilla I'm happy you got it to work!! I didn't see any other outlying big numbers (multiples of 100 seem to be towns and outside areas). Ones that aren't multiples of 100 appear to be inside houses and similar which I haven't checked, so there could be something in those?
@@winterdoggo I’m trying file for file and for now I haven’t found anything unused, what I found tho is a lot of unused icons in the game files and there is a TON of them, I could send them to you if you wanted to take a peek
This is so cool! I know i'm seeing this video so late but it's still amazing to see. I grew up with the dog island and still play it! Have you managed to find any other unused areas?
I haven't found any other unused areas - and if there are any, they aren't likely to be this big, since I've looked through all the areas marked with "big" numbers. All the others I haven't looked at are likely to be the insides of houses and so on
but someone found a different area you can enter from to reach a different section of *this* area (the bit with the round blue room and the pretty bit with the "islands" and the light falling through). This was a while ago so I can't perfectly remember - I think it was into North Sandy from Dry Valley...?
This is a whole other thing, but I've actually been learning about computers and code as well! It's very early on, but if I get good enough I might eventually be able to dive in even further. (Someone I met in the speedrunning community used a tool to make readable C code for this game to understand it better, so perhaps I can do something with that myself eventually)
Finally, there is some other unused stuff I found that weren't areas - the most exciting for me is some unused dialogue from an earlier version of the game, where there's a different mail system and a tweaked Puroro town section. (Strangely, this early Puroro town was also translated into English. The characters are all uhh rural south US? i'm not american lol but. You're actually delivering milk yourself, your sibling collapses in the morning, stuff's wild. I made a post about it on Tumblr but I've considered making a video about it as well.)
@@winterdoggo
Sucks that you didn't find any other unused areas, but still super cool that you managed to find this one!!
That coding stuff is really neat, I hope you can get to learn more and find more out about the dog island. Coding has always been so interesting to me but so confusing, so I haven't been bothered to learn it. Maybe one day I will get the motivation too.
You should make a video about that stuff btw! Sounds really good and like a good watch. :)
this is cool
This is so cool! I lvoe seeing cut stuff from games. How did you get the out-of-bounds camera?
It's an option in Dolphin Emulator. Takes some getting used to, but it's fun to explore with and seems to work with a lot of games (not that I'm speaking from experience here, since I've only tried this one and Petz Catz 2).
Dont say that we have to "deal with" your voice! Youre supposed to be confident in yourself. Ive faced the same issue doing youtube, and i can tell you its just getting worked up over nothing! Its fine!
Wait you can RUN? I've been walking for donkey's years.
I have a theory: One of the exits leads to Great Meadows or something as it's the exit from the minecart thing
So, here's some news you may be interested in - someone who actually has programming skills has been digging into the game recently, and he found earlier versions of Pupsville and Green Meadows. There's no spare exit there for the minecart to go into, but there's some interesting differences nonetheless!
(You'll have to wait a while to see old meadows proper, as there's still a lot to uncover. All we've seen so far is a completely untextured landscape in blender)
Who is it? I'd love to subscribe
@@GenderlessFurry_They-Them I'm talking to em on discord, if they make a video i will let you know
@@winterdoggoHow did you do the camera thing
@@GenderlessFurry_They-Them It's an option you can find in Dolphin, which is the emulator I used to make the video :]
how did you do it

Can you show more unused stuff?
I planned on it, but I'm not sure when that will be
