and i wonder if it is gonna be anything like the version by Geoff Love and his Orchestra, though my favourite version of this famous theme was a disco version by a group called Mankind. eerie and good.
This is a very cool reimagined version of the Doctor Who theme, it definitely has the Halloween vibes and feel to it. 🎃🎃🎃👍 If John Carpenter ever produced a Doctor Who film or episode, I can imagine it being a retelling of Halloween 3: Season of the Witch. Except, the Halloween masks that Silver Shamrock would produce wouldn't make kids spew out spiders and snakes during the commercial, it would convert them into Cybermen!!! How's that for an idea? Anyway keep up the good work pal, I'd love to hear the Doctor Who theme in the style of Tim Burton.
that sounds terrifying, something like 'The Cyber Season', would definitely end like Warriors from The Deep "If only there was something we could've done to prevent all of this." (the Doctor, their companions are alive in a field of dead Cybermen and humans)
Out of this whole series this one has to be my favorite. I always wondered what Doctor Who would be like if it took a stroll down the road of horror and away from family friendly adventures. In this alternate version we wouldn't just see more blood and violence, but the reality of the enemies The Doctor has would be more terrifying. Imagine the cybermen but in a rated R film, and we saw the same dark themes that Russel T. Davis tried to do but even darker, and more front-and-center - we'd see the full detail of families being assimilated. In an early draft of that one episode where the Cyberman remembered it was a bride on her way to her wedding before being assimilated, that scene was actually supposed to be about an eight year old boy looking for his mom. They changed that because they thought it was too dark and upsetting. Imagine if they didn't change that, and they fully acknowledge that they killed a child. Moreover, imagine basically any major Doctor Who villain, already scary as they may be, but have them actually in a horror setting. All of them could work... Imagine actually being hunted for real by a Dalek, slowly hovering down an alley way, passing by the bodies of recently exterminated citizens. The invasion already happened, the city is in ruins. They're just cleaning up what's left. Exterminate, Exterminate.
Like your take ...As someone who was a teenage fan of the series in the 80s I remember when the crew under producer John Nathan-Turner and Who horror-meister Robert Holmes tried to turn Who more dark and adult, starting with the end of the Baker era, through the Davison years and finally reaching their zenith in the short lived Baker-Bryant season and a half which got so ghastly, so bloody, so comically grand guignol that fans and press threw a fit and director general Michael Grade (who wanted the show dead anyway) used it as an excuse to pull the plug on the show altogether. - Cyberman hand crushing, mass murder of supporting characters, torture porn dystopias, a kill happy Doctor and Davros turning corpses into mutated molten blob Daleks! When Androgum foodie Shockeye tried to cook Peri Brown live on camera the nation went wild and classic Who was killed on the spot! (Sure, we got the debacle of Trial of a Timelord and the two seasons of kiddie friendly pussy-Who with Sylvester McCoy, but it would be merciful not to consider that real classic Who) The Beeb got their fingers badly burned with horror Who and haven't gone back there since ... nailed it so perfectly! Honestly I find too many modern composers stay horribly close to the original piece and it always sounds like "Hey here's my imitation of so and so" but your composition totally strays from that safety and brings a new dimension to the theme! Nice work hommes.
This is the first thing I've ever heard from you and I subscribed about a minute into the piece. Brilliant. I'm going on a GeorgeCMusic marathon all day tomorrow.
I dig it! Everything from the great choice in electronic instrument selection to the arrangement to that great title animation. Has a great dark feel to it.
Please release a full version! This theme is brilliant and sounds dark, and mysterious, a perfect mix of how Ron Grainer intended for the theme to be like, and what Delia Derbyshire made it like.
Perfect: this could actually have played on American TV. Beautiful visual AND sonic recreation of the how the early 80's felt, and the "middle eight" is particularly nice.
Doctor Who + John Carpenter, this is heaven for me my friend, thank you! It'd be a dream to see Carpenter do an episode if it was anything like my favourite film of all time; The Thing.
Stefano Pavone It could be a special shown late at night, like how Class (as shit as it is) is quite gory so it's not out of the question. But I think the chances of Carpenter doing one are well about as likely as a full Master Plan recovery.
The second I heard this, I immediately felt this was a theme for 7. Perhaps the instrumentation being similar to his actual theme contributed to that, but the darker elements of later 7 blend amazingly well with this theme.
Doesn't that kinda already exist? With Zygons and such? (Though, honestly to me Zygons aren't really that threatening) Maybe Davros or the Master could've experimented with a Zygon, making it more much more horrifying and lethal, and then let it loose in the TARDIS when the Doctor was off doing something.
Pretty cool take on a classic sci-fi TV theme. I was a bit iffy on the first minute or so, but once "Dr. Who" appeared on the screen, and the music kicked in, I was sold.
This sounds like a mix of the Halloween Theme, The Fog soundtrack, and Christine Attacks from the Christine soundtrack. It sounds really cool! Being a big Doctor Who and John Carpenter fan this is the best thing in the world to me! I love it!
Immediately sub'd! Massive Carpenter fan and also filmmaker and musician. I think the first half of this nails the mark, dead on. I would say it gets a bit complex for Carpenter's style after that. But great work!
I saw Alan do a bunch of his musical pieces at a con early this year. I had my phone taping the whole time his rendition of the Halloween theme kicked in.
John Carpenter is a great director, his movies are made greater by the fact that he does his own soundtracks. Robert Rodriguez is a fan of this also and does his own soundtracks whenever he can. I hear Carpenter likes hanging around Rodriguez's sets. Once again, blown away by another masterpiece capturing the target musician perfectly.
Great take on it. Just one bug. You've got {John Hurt} listed between Eccelston and Tennant when it should be between McGann and Eccelston. Only hardcore Whovians will notice, but they will care. ;) Good stuff though.
What's funny is "Chariots of Pumpkins" (Halloween III theme from John Carpenter) sounds like it should be on a Doctor Who episode rather than a horror film.
I really love what you did to design these titles. They fit so well with his style of film. Two tiny changes, though, that would have made it complete. If you look at film titles from any time before 1990, they will typically fade down to a dim blue color, with a hint of gold halfway between, both when they fade-in, and fade-out. I have not confirmed this, nor could I exactly, but my theory is that it fades to a blue color because that's what the halogen bulbs do as they turn off while the white painted text is being photographed against a black surface. So making them fade down to a blue color as they also dissolve to transparent would add an extra layer of authenticity. Along with the all important frame wiggle, since there tends to be a tiny bit with title sequences of the era.
I didn't know that about the halogens, although now you mention it I have noticed the effect you describe. Thank you for the tip. (And in my defence I did put in a bit of frame wiggle on the credits, but I don't know how noticeable it is)
