When I was a kid in the 70’s my ma used this song to teach me the concepts of metaphor and subtext. On the surface level song's about a baby lamb that died and a dragonfly flying outside a house.
The subtext level is that the spirit of the deceased lamb, its animating soul, was reincarnated as the dragonfly singing out to the one who grieves “I’m flying can't you see me i'm flying” and the one who grieves sings back that they are lonely and invites the now recognized reincarnated lamb spirit dragonfly to be together at a new home. Still the singer mourns, as even though the soul that animated the lamb's form lives on, the lost lamb was a unique and precious form, its life too short and there will never be another like it. The dragonfly wanders but the singer reminds it how terribly it's missed and constantly invites it to come home to him.
The metaphor level, ma said, was that Paul couldn't save the Beatles (little lamb) so he used his heartbreak to craft the band a good death of love & dignity (Abbey Road Medley/The End). But Paul grieves, and misses his friends, and cries out for the Lennon-McCartney songwriting partnership that had animated the Beatles, and could have been reincarnated into a new form away from the band with just a word from John. Paul is singing directly to John as “Dragonfly”. They were friends from the age of 16 & had planned to write together lifelong, soulmates. Ma was a good teacher, but McCartney is an *exquisite* songwriter & vocalist.

Thank you! Little Lamb Dragonfly has been one of my favorite McCartney songs since Red Rose Speedway was released. Ever since I've thought it was about John. The emotion and anguish in Paul's voice is raw. It's important to note the song was recorded in 1971 during the sessions for Ram. I find it exceedingly emotional and love the melody, progressions, and chord changes that really trigger such a response.

the "lamb"-part was motivated by an actual newborn lamb from Paul's scottish farm, it hat to be put down ("I can help you out, but can't help you into Iive"). The rest and the whole of it, I think it's safe to say that is about and directed to John Lennon.

The little lamb portion is about a lamb that died on his farm, but I strongly believe the Dragonfly part is about John. You and I still have a way to go…I go on, but I miss you so, in my heart I feel the pain…I’m waiting, can’t you see me, I’m waiting…you’ve been away too long….how did two rights make a wrong…if it’s about John, it’s simply heartbreaking.

    • @yes2day100

I agree with you. But I think the little lamb portion is also him talking to John. At the time John was alive, and the two of them were cordial. 'I can help you out, but I can't help you in...' In other words, 'you have to meet me half way.'

I have had the same opinion of this song for many many years. I don't think Paul regards it as one of his best, but the level of production and care that went into it, plus arguably one of his best vocals ever (particularly the later parts of the song) make this a masterpiece in my view.

It was one of the songs that was never sung in concert. It was painful for McCartney to compose and even more painful to perform. It wasn't only about Lennon, but the death of a lamb and a horse and a dog. It was about his mother who died when he was young, and Brian Epstein and other lost loves in his life. It was the counterpart to John Lennon's "In My Life." It is a masterpiece, but it wasn't a song McCartney publicized because it was so very personal and painful.

So beautiful and heart breaking. The music and harmonies are so wonderfully layered. One thing ive found out about McCartney and Lennon is that they frequently communicated through song. The title of the song may start with an innocuous subject or to someone else entirely, but then somewhere in there is a msg to the other. John would slip in a "Paul" song title; Paul i think was a little more oblique. So sad they never could come back to writing music together again..

A criminally neglected gem from one of Paul's most underrated albums. It's unusual for how Denny Laine sings the first verse, but, after that, Paul sings the lead, with Denny and Linda harmonizing.

I’m reading the McCartney Legacy and it mentions this song in detail.
    Denny Seiwell is on drums.
The ‘jumping board’ for this song is when one of Paul’s lambs was dying in his arms and he felt helpless.
And I can’t remember if it was at the same time BUT, there was a dragonfly at his window trying to get in.
Obviously he embellished it a bit more, but that’s it. The guys a genius.

I'm honestly a bigger fan of Paul's post-Beatles work, than with The Beatles. Seeing you do videos for songs like this makes me happy. I think what he's done after The Beatles is just terribly underrated across the board. Little Lamb Dragonfly isn't one of my favorites personally, but it's still unquestionably good, and just speaks to the depth of his library. If you ever wanna do another deep cut of his, I suggest "Too Much Rain". It's just so quintessentially Paul.

I’m starting to think his post-Beatles work is just as good if not better! Maybe his phenomenal Beatles music really was just his warm-up?!?! His long solo career and his Wings years just fascinate me. I just listened to “Off The Ground” and “Chaos and Creation in the Backyard” for the first time a few weeks ago!! SO MUCH good music I’m discovering, it’s overwhelming!

I’ve loved the Beatles since the mid-90’s and never heard any of Paul’s solo/Wings stuff apart from the main hits like “Maybe I’m Amazed”, “Live and Let Die”, “Jet” and “Silly Love Songs”, etc.
New Year’s Day 2022 started my ex-Beatle Paul journey and I’ve not been disappointed. Ram has become one of my favorite albums of all time, of course Band on the Run as well. And his classical albums like Standing Stone and Liverpool Oratorio? OH MY GOD… BEAUTIFUL!!!!! I’m so glad I’m finally experiencing all the phenomenal music I’ve been missing out on for the last 20 years!!!!!

I LOVE this song. It's one of the sweetest tracks from my favorite Wings album. I think part of the reason this track, and the whole album for that matter gets panned is because of how sentimental it is. That is of course one of Paul's many facets. He is and has been the most versatile composer in pop/rock history. You can't dismiss Helter Skelter because of Yesterday and you can't dismiss Band on the Run or Maybe I'm Amazed because of Silly Love Songs. From classical, to blues, to reggae, to techno, to ballads, to rockers, to whimsical pieces, Paul's done it all, and most better than anyone else.
