  • Week #3 of our January Pantry Challenge! You can learn more about the challenge by viewing this video: • Meal Planning, Food Sh... Basically, the challenge is to eat only from your pantry for the entire month. This week felt more "normal" to us. We cooked a bit bigger meals this time around, so we had a lot of leftovers to go around. So far, all we've bought from the store this month is cheese ♥

I am new to your channel and enjoying your video content. I am glad you addressed the comments that you were getting about not using pantry food now and going to the store "while the getting is good" instead. One of the things I have noticed is that people just can't get used to the concept of becoming less dependent on grocery stores as a regular way of life. This new revival of homesteading is seen as being a "prepper" or "survivalist" to many people. It was still the "norm" when I was growing up to plant gardens and keep your pantry stocked up, especially in the winter (Vermont). It was wisdom, plain and simple. NOT considered hording. It is so time consuming and so much more expensive to go to the store all the time. I do worry if things really do get worse in this country because so many people are so dependent on the system and quick fix, or fast food and everything prepared and prepackaged. They will flip out when they don't know how to do anything. It is so satisfying to withdraw from the rat race and slow down and get back to a simpler way of life doing things for ourselves and our neighbors.

I am so sorry that people have made those comments and you felt you had to back pedal to explain yourselves. I just love your channel and seeing you both work so hard in the kitchen, canning, raising and growing food. I always feel like you've made room at your table for me to sit and listen to your stories and education on homesteading. Thank you for being real, for sharing what works and what didn't turn out as you hoped. ♥️

I think it is interesting that so many people are apposed to this challenge out of fear of using up your stores. I do this every year because we need to use what we have to make space for what we make.

    • @jenniferspeers2453
      @jenniferspeers2453 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

Agreed. Storing just to store is counter productive. Store what you eat, eat what you store. Otherwise you are tying up your money/time and possibly throwing it away if things spoil or are never eaten.

    • @Jeff-rd6hb
      @Jeff-rd6hb 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

Yeah, I preserve a lot of my own produce & other stuff specifically to consume it throughout the year until the next season's harvest. Even though I've got far less storage capacity than Rachel & Todd I often still end up with half of the previous year's haul when I start canning & freezing again. Those foods are meant to be eaten, not stored indefinitely, and using that stuff has literally zero impact on the supply chain, lol.

I would love to see more cooking videos, especially ones where you just empty your fridge. No recipe, just putting stuff together. We often make 3 bigger meals and just eat leftovers as well, not everyone eats the same meal. It works well for our household.

I am definitely not one of those commenters! I am happy that you two work hard enough that you can have dinner from a pantry shelf or freezer. Those nights that you are able to just grab something may be what keep you going with that enthusiasm you both have! I am so excited that I "know" someone who is going to keep an old testament law by giving the land a rest. May God continue to richly bless you both as I believe He will!

We live on the side of a mountain in the sticks. Door dash is not an option so we cook meals most every day so I’m right there with you guys. We also have a pretty well stocked pantry. Going to the store is an hour commitment so we don’t go but once per week

    • @loritanner4478

Same here. We live way out in the country. And I also am allergic to gluten and dairy. Can't eat corn, popcorn, garlic, all types of oranges. No corn syrup and a few other things. So eating out is a very stressful thing and so we don't do it. There is only 3 places I can trust to eat at. But I make 99 1/2% of all of our meals from scratch. I also can a ton. In 2020 I canned 1200 jars. This past year 800. Since I can ingredients and meals that I can eat. I don't cook separate meals for my hubby. I just try to cook food thst taste good to anyone. Not just gf/df people. Most people don't know their eating gluten and dairy free food. So I too cook meals that are more time consuming. But I also have meals of just grab something and eat it. I have plenty of things to chose from. So everyone has their own way of eating. One isn't wrong or right. We also only eat 2 meals a day. Can't eat 3 a day, I would feel like you, Rachel, stuffed! Lol 😆

Boy are you so right about dishes! When I started cooking from scratch I was shocked at how many dishes I go through just to prepare one dinner! My husband does the dishes and he keeps telling me he doesn’t mind since it’s the price to pay for delicious, healthy food. Anyone that has followed you for a few years know that for the most part, you plan your pantry for a year’s worth of food. Great ideas!

You guys are stocked for sure. I wish I could get my husband on board with stocking up somethings like more meat. The other stuff I stay pretty well stocked even if he thinks I'm nuts. He didn't say to much when the last shortages started and I had great pleasure in saying I told you so! I got this from my mother who went through the depression. I don't know why that is comforting to me to see, but it is always a pleasure to watch anything they do. I also love how you both always compliment each other on their cooking.
My aunts cook pretty much all meals from scratch and compliments are rare, thought family always give her feedback.
Tbf, I am pretty sure she prefers feedback over compliments, but I personally cook so little that if I'm in the kitchen I expect compliments and I always find it weird when others don't feel the same way 🤣

Most of my pantry is store bought canned items and some freezer items. My husband has always fussed at me because I always keep the pantry full. Until lately!! I am disabled and he has gone without a job for 3 months. He is now working a new job and we are still eating and living out of the pantry. I prefer to cook 4-6 portion meals anyway and freeze some of it, that way we're not eating the same meal 3 days in a row if we don't feel like it and we've always got loads of freezer meals we can just warm up with some rice etc. I couldn't manage cooking a 2 person meal twice every day!

Right, since we've done the challenge, we've not changed a thing! The shortage has not effected us and I am, too, glad that I don't have to take from the grocery stores from those that need it because they don't grow their own food. I told my husband that my challenge videos may seem pretty boring because I make big meals and we eat leftovers or remake meals all week. I don't have time to cook all the time or everyday so it's been a challenge for me to bring lots of new recipes to the table, so to speak. We all like that “lazy” kind of meals, whether it’s eating out or grub hub. I actually feel guilty if I eat out instead of eating what I stored. 🤷🏻‍♀️🤪
Is there ever a happy medium…it’s what you like to do! Chill out on them people! 😉

And this is why we do what we do.. Tapping into a supply chain, is not so bad when your supply chain is in your pantry. I love shopping my pantry. I go to the stores just for the things I do not grow, like fresh produce, and flour or meal, things like that. You should be proud and blessed and you owe no one a reason of what you do and why you do it.

When I saw you make the breakfast casserole I knew it was gonna be a little dryer over cooked because those older crockpots are the best but they cook at such a higher temperature where the newer crockpots don’t get as hot as those old school ones. Just a though. Love you both and y’all are my favorite channel!! Blessings! How that sweet grand-baby?

My garden was a complete fail last year. My garden bed soil needs amended (prior owner has Lyme stone in it). I am taking part in this challenge too and did have concern over the supply chain issues BUT we have an amazingly stocked pantry (3 in fact but we are a family of 11) so I'm sure those who have canned and stored away properly can relate. We aren't terribly concerned about not going to the grocery store. I too feel grateful with my family size that I'm not in the stores clearing out the last bit of meat or pasta.
Dishes!!!! I was just saying how this creates so many dishes but seeing those empty jars in my dishwasher is a great feeling

It’s a great idea to eat the way you do using your pantry items. In watching preparedness TH-cam videos they say it’s a good idea to do that so in a real emergency you already know what to do and it’s natural to you. Thanks for sharing with us.

For me the challenge is more about finding way to use what I canned/froze and to use up the older stuff (and to try to keep my husband from shopping! lol). We are like you, and don't cook an actual meal for each day, left overs, sandwiches, snacks fill in the blanks.

Thank you for that comment in regards that you may not need to go out and use the supply chain. Thank you for the reminder that those who can leave supplies for those who need it. I do not have a homestead but do have a small garden so I try to save when I can.

Your house, your rules. I’ve been doing my own pantry challenge because my husband and I have the C19 so no going anywhere for a awhile. It hasn’t been a problem and I’m certainly not tapping into all of our stores. Why spend all those hours and effort during harvest if you can’t enjoy all your labor? It’s actually been a huge blessing because I’m gettin a better handle on my food.

People are something else. Honest truth is not their business what you do. What amazes me when watching videos is how people scrutinize every little thing and make comments on every move the creators make. My thought is who cares and I hope I never get that petty.

We eat like you all do as well. Cook 2 or 3 times a week and eat leftovers. Have what we call "grab and growl" nights.
Today has been all about the turkey that was gifted us. 15 pints of meat and 5 quarts of roasted turkey bone broth. That I roasted on Sunday.

I understand these comments about not using what's in your stockpile. Many of us have already cleaned out and organized our pantries prior to now. Also with all of the prior to the holiday food that we buy we have extras left over I need a way to use them up. One nice thing about this challenge is it you make up your own rules. I would not say to pass up a great deal on something to stock up on but maybe cut back and then we get what you absolutely need try to use those back of the pantry items in this challenge.

Lots of people I know go to the store several times a week to get food for financial reasons or because thats how they choose to plan their meals. It's absolutely nobody's business how anyone chooses to purchase their groceries or when they choose to purchase them. It's a shame anyone would make that kind of comment to you after all the hard work you both put into making your channel what it is. You both do a great job of teaching people how to be more self sufficient and give lots of fresh ideas to long term canners like myself. Thank you very much. Btw...the steaks looked amazing. Yum! 👌

I think this pantry challenge should be for those who eat out and don't keep a well stocked pantry. Last year was a horrible year for my husband and I due to massive storms. Our money went to repair our well and home so, we ate out of our pantry. We occurred a job changed so, again ate out of our pantry for December. We buy to replace what we use.
I have been canning foods from our freezer just in case we find deals and need freezer room.
As Leisa from Suttons Daze says, "Your kitchen your rules. You do you".
    So, smile and do you!

I appreciate your purposeful and intentional participation in the January Pantry Challenge. I've learned so much and I'm thankful you take the time to share. There will always be critics, so I pretend it's the hecklers in the balcony from the muppet show and then I laugh about it. I look forward to this week in review. I'm certainly going to can that green tomato curry! My husband isn't a fan, so I'll do pints. Rachel and Todd, thanks for sharing all that you do. 😉

Great idea. Use what you have and make enough for leftovers. Most don't eat their leftovers unfortunately. There is no better feeling than growing, storing, cooking and the eating that food. I had to wonder about the amount of dishes to wash though 😩. But so worth it

Did a TH-cam search for "Pantry Challenge 2022 and found you. I don't have a channel or do SC, but I'm doing the challenge too. You're right, it's not really a challenge for those with a homesteading mindset. I live in town so I can't have animals, and am just getting started growing foods so berry bushes & some fruit trees aren't producing yet - but I bulk buy in the spring, once my pantry has been "used down", and track over summer what I might have missed or have used up over summer so I can make a smaller purchase in the fall. I belong to a food buying club to reduce costs, buy meat/eggs/dairy locally, and shop farmers markets. I'm not overly concerned about supply chain hiccups (although a full out failure would create problems), I'm not at all concerned about news stories of food recalls. It's a great feeling. And yes, I used to run the dishwasher once a week, now it's every-other day!

Talking about the food chain shortage. I was talking to someone at work about the same thing you said, My pantry is for me and family and friends who may need it, but I don't have to buy from the grocery store as often and that leaves more for the people who need it.

It’s been fun to see what you come up with. I’m doing the pantry challenge and it was coconut curry lentils one night. No curry powder but I had all the spices to make it myself. It’s surprising what I have in my pantry and freezers. I’m focusing more on meals and yes the dishes are abundant as I’m canning too. Once again thank you for your inspiration.
