- How to Calculate Sample Size Use Slovin's Formula in Microsoft Excel.
What is a Sample Size?
A Sample Size is the total number of data points collected in a study (e.g., the number of responses to a single survey question). Identifying sample size is key to determining whether data accurately reflects the population as a whole. A larger sample size generally means greater accuracy.
What is Slovin’s Formula?
Slovin’s formula is used to calculate the sample size necessary to achieve a certain confidence interval when sampling a population. This formula is used when you don’t have enough information about a population’s behavior (or the distribution of behavior) to otherwise know the appropriate sample size.
Slovin’s formula as below:
n = N/(1+Ne^2)
n: Sample size
N: Population size
e: Margin of error
10% 5% 1%
Confidence level: 90% 95% 99%
In this example, I use the confidence level of 95% meaning that the margin of error is 5% and I calculate the sample size in 5 groups as below:
Group N n
1 2100 84
2 1800 72
3 2000 80
4 1775 71
5 1925 77
Total 9600 384
Actually, the Slovin's Formula is similar to the Yamane Taro's Formula.
Yamane Taro's Formula:
n = N/[1+N(e)^2]
n: Sample size
N: Population size
e: Margin of error
10% 5% 1%
Confidence level: 90% 95% 99%

If you have the Population, you can calculate the sample size using Slovin's Formula or Yamane Taro's Formula.
