Thanks for filming this Shawn! I live in Rugeley (well, Brereton) and was one of the ones watching from my bedroom window, it's great seeing another perspective of it happening. Hi Shawn. Watched your video from California at 4am. A little sad to see the chimney go after 50 years service. Good seeing you and I'm looking forward to more Adventures with you. Take care.
Definitely experience the difference between the speed of light and the speed of sound. I saw on TV the demolition of the cooling towers at Ironbridge. Certainly changed the skyline. I can understand some people missing them and getting nostalgic if the view has been a big part of their lives. The view from the trains on the West Coast Main line is never going to the same.
Quite a sad day for Rugeley and it’s history, but I guess that it happened for a good reason or it just might of seen its better days.. I watched the live video of it happening and it was quite emotional for my relatives and some of the people i knew who are based there in Rugeley. I am based approximately 15 minutes from Rugeley so it was quite sad for me because when we were not in our 3rd lockdown me and my family went on a few walks in that area.. Its still snowing quite heavily where I am too, so i think you were quite lucky with the weather. I really like your content and your main channels content too, I love the environment and theme parks.. Thanks for the video Shawn, Harry
Thank you very much for sharing your thoughts and for watching both of my channels. It was fascinating to see this and perfect timing before the snow hit too!
Don't forget the twelve towers at Drax power station in North Yorkshire. I reckon they'll be in service for a few more years yet as that station has been converted to burn biomass.
Brilliant videos Shawn, you should come and document the River Weaver and the nature reserves, some really good old boat docks and yards up by the River, also the town Northwich has a lot of history regarding the Salt Mines and the Salt Factory. Stay safe. We're about 50 mins if that from the Staffordshire area
I’m so glad you mention the fact you could see it from the corkscrew at alton towers I thought I was the only one that saw it back it the day... also can be seen from weaver hills you’ll know where that is Shawn and the steam during cold weather could be seen from Birmingham city centre... so sad to see it go though I remember going there back in 2004-05 on a school trip and you alway know where you are when seeing the chimney and cooling tower’s Great video! Just Subscribed.. I’m also from Uttoxeter and rushed to Rugeley this morning lol.
Nice video! I somewhat recently saw the demolition of some cooling towers - quite spectacular! Shame to see iconic pieces of infrastructure leave the landscape though
Hi mate. Went to see it myself and record it, stuck it on my channel. I'm kinda in the same boat as you mate, these landmarks mean a lot to their respective areas. Over the past 2 years I've been up and down the country documenting whenever I can the demolition of these industrial monoliths, chatting with locals about them and what these places have meant to them, be it if they worked there, or it's just a convenient landmark to know when you're home on a journey. End of 2019 I was over in Shropshire in Ironbridge to watch their 4 iconic cooling towers demolished. Watched it with some fellas who worked at the power station. Loads of people wanted them kept, restored and put on the Listed Buildings list to be protected. Unfortunately English Heritage had assessed them and they were too outdated and costly to keep let alone maintain so they had to go. Up in Yorkshire near Leeds at a place called Ferrybridge, I watched 5 of their 8 iconic towers demolished, same kinda feelings with a few who thought them eyesores. Down in Oxfordshire in Didcot, three towers and a chimney were brought down. They were widely loved, in a county as flat as Oxfordshire they were the most prominent thing on the skyline, all gone now. Whether their eyesores or monuments to our industrial heritage, the UK's gonna be a different place without them on the skyline. Fiddler's Ferry up north near Warrington is earmarked for demolition, Cottam in Nottinghamshire has 8 towers that'll be gone within next few years, Eggborough just down the road from Ferrybridge in Yorkshire off the M62 is also earmarked for blowdown. At this rate, the 5 at Willington near Derby will be the last standing in the UK and they've been derelict for 20 years. I hope I get to say goodbye to all of them.
Hi Shawn, I am not too far away in Wolves......have they set the date for the cooling towers come down? How did you find out about this one? 🌻Nigel.............MuddyBootz Allotment🌻🌻
Very nice vlog indeed, I was on top of a hill in Brereton the other side watching it come down, unlike the field when there was less people, there was a lot of people on the hill watching this come down.
So strange and sad to see it gone! I remember it being built and quickly become an iconic landmark. Hoping to watch the cooling towers going down. I went into one of them at a school trip in the late 90s.

They do demolitions like this around the world, and are considered among the best. Thank you for sharing this! Controlled demolitions are a fascination for me!
Here near Iron bridge we are still awaiting the drop of the 630 foot main stack. I noticed that they blew Rugeley with charges half way up as well to split it before gravity took control. I presume a similar tactic will be used as well.

Hiya.Good comment. Several documentaries have examined the trade tower collapses. They both fell within their own footprints. For two structures 1300 feet tall that in itself is staggering from an engineering point of view.A demolition team would have struggled to replicate that not once but twice. The conclusion was floor slab hanger brackets failing through heat and creating a domino effect but ? Both towers were damaged at much different heights so the fact they fell identically raised many structural engineers eyebrows.
By the way, I believe the height was only 500ft. I should know as I stood on top at completion doing the final snagging check before handover to the owner, then CEGB.
Actually, I am mistaken. This chimney is the second on this site, built as part of a flue gas desulphurisation plant added more recently. I am sure someone out there will be able to confirm this and give relevant dates. I worked on construction of the original chimney back in 1966/7, which must have been demolished previously to make way for the desulphurisation plant. The original chimney was 500ft high, for sure.
