    That's a real machine tool. In my career shop we had a couple dozen with four in a row reserved for first year apprentices. Carlton drill presses are nearly bullet proof. If forty years of apprentices can't degrade the function of a Carlton radial arm drill, nothing will.
    You will find what you will find. Nothing's perfect. Carlton made thousands of these over the years. I'm sure you can find the parts manual on line. Everything is so well made: they're a pleasure to work on and when cleaned up and shiny an esthetically pleasing addition to the inventory.
    Im green with stuff-envy. Happy drilling.

    If you plan on wire wheeling it/ paint stripping this beautiful drill then let me know somehow. I'm on my path to a career as a machinist and have learned a ton from you. I'm in ohio but I'd happily come down for a few days and help you! I talk about you at work and even use your videos to make parts! A few minutes out of your day making these videos has impacted me greatly! Plus I might have a lead for some big mt bits at work! Our carlton sadly stopped working and got scrapped. I couldn't afford to move it nor was it my shop tall enough. But the bits are still there and of no need! I'll ask Monday if I can have them or what they'd want! As always, keep on keeping on and have a great day sir!

    Awesome machine! I want to pass on something that my Grandpa taught me about straps on a trailer. He said to always put your ratchets or binders on the passenger side of the trailer just in case you need to adjust anything, you will be out of traffic. I always think about him when i tie stuff down now lol.

    I worked in a machine tool builders in Spain who’s main product was this sort of drill . In Europe they were known as Foradia ,in North America I think they were sold as “South Bend”They made from the very small models up to real monsters . These machines are versatile and even when they’re big easy to work . I’m sure you will use it a lot . All the best Adam .

    These old beauties last and last. I am sure you will go through it with a fine tooth comb. Skookum trailer frame bud. We can never overbuild these. I once worked with a 10 ft Master service Radial. As memory serves the post was 36 in. It would drive 6 in spade drills all day with no complaints. You have a new adventure that I will definitely not miss my friend.

    I can appreciate your excitement with new to you machinery. The first time I saw a ROTEX 18 turret punch was my first day in trade school. That was in 1963. I could never afford the multi thousand dollar cost of having a dust collector. Last week, while searching Craigslist for a forklift, I found my Rotex punch, at the right price, and took it off my bucket list. The Rotex ix still in my Ram 2500 and will be there until Tuesday.
    It weighs 537 pounds. (243.6kg) I will be building a nice base/cabinet to the punch.

    Looks good. If I was closer I would hop on rebuilding the trailer with you in a heartbeat. When you put some new lights on get some tubing large enough to mount the lights inside of for the trailer brake/tail lights. You can then weld them on to wherever you want and are a lot less likely to tear them up. And if you have to redo the wiring use some of the orange extension cord. Works really well and you can just zip tie it down or attach it with whatever you want with very little risk of the wire chafing. Unless you have trailer brakes it only takes a left brake, right brake and running light to run the lights.

    I really got a kick out of abom storytime with the old trailer pictures! I found your one video about your malibu, I've got to watch that tomorrow. I have done a lot of car and engine work and have been getting into more formal lathe and mill work, I just bought a bridgeport clone and I'm excited to see just how much trouble I can get into with it! I've learned a heck of a lot from you, I really appreciate all the dang time that goes into making these videos! going back to find that malibu video just shows how much content you have created and it's all great. You and Keith Fenner are my favorite machinists! Yall have taught me patience in my machining. Love that Pensacola accent btw

    Those old carltons are hard to beat, I got a 4' arm on 11" column. If ya ever need parts look up Lucas precision, they are the ones who ended aquiring all of cartltons old drawings, shop manuals and alot of jigs for making new castings along with maching new parts from the original blue prints.
    Also the elevator gear box is designed to seep onto to lead screw so make sure it always has oil in her.

    We called it the hole wizard back in the day. Rugged machine for roughing holes in tough parts. I never saw a lot of uses for it . However it was a beast of a machine. If you have a lot of work for it, it would be cost effective. If you don't it will collect dust. Good luck with it! It was a very popular machine in job shops. Just seeing one again, brings back memories.

    Where I work, we USED to have 3 of the Carltons. 1 was this size, then a 4ft on 12in and a 6ft on 15in column. We still have the two larger ones. The use the #6 Morse taper...what a pain to slam those tools up in...they get heavy after awhile. Good luck with your latest toy.

    Before you replace that wood deck, try soaking it in undiluted antifreeze. I've heard from boat owners that it works wonders for preserving wood that's just starting to rot. It kills all the microbes and swells up the wood fibres.

    If you're going to leave a load on the trailer for a while put some blocks under the rear frame. When you crank the tongue off the hitch it'll tilt back onto the blocks and take some of the load off the tires. If you jack it up a little higher and then let it down on blocks in the front too it really stabilizes the trailer.

    Hey Adam, I have an old American Radial that's about the same size. Be careful when unloading because that
    arm might still move when you are taking it off. When we moved ours, we rotated the arm up to the mast on the
    forklift and secured it there so it wouldn't move. We also made a heavy duty outrigger that we mounted to the t-slots in the base between the column and the table. Extending out about 15" minimum to the front and back of the base
    gives it a wider footprint, especially if the arms starts swinging around (and even more so if the drilling head is out
    on the end of the arm). Scary thought. These things are very top heavy........ Nice machine to have in your shop.

    Just a suggestion from a guy that has done a little hauling. Always have front to rear tension on anything you are hauling. You tied it down real good for everything but an emergency stop or God forbid a front end collision. Had a friend die because his boat was not secured (properly) front to rear and it slid over the top killing both guys in the cab.

    • @ke6gwf
      @ke6gwf 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      If I was hauling that I probably would have added a chain over the top of the table in front of the column, with the ends going back to behind the fenders on each side, since the greatest force this will experience is braking force making it want to slide forward.
      The second greatest force will be tipping forward, so I would put the front block as far forward under the table as possible (it is a fulcrum under the column here), and would have the chain over the head angled a little further to the rear to hold against the forward tipping.
      The 3rd greatest force is rocking side to side with that high center of gravity, so I would have used 2 more chains (or straps if chains would damage it) around the column above the head. One chain would attach to the side of the trailer in front of the column, go around the column and attach to the same side of the trailer but behind the column, and the other chain would do the same thing from the other side of the trailer, ending up making an X pattern (when viewed from above) or actually 2 interlocking V shapes, effectively locking the column in place in all directions.
      But for a short drive, Adam did fine, because he isn't an over-securing anal truck driver like me lol
      Let's just say I treat tie downs like Adam treats dialing in 4 jaw chucks.
      It shall be perfect, and in my case, perfect means that over a travel of 1000 miles, I can measure the shifting of my load in thousandths of an inch... Lol

    Reminds me of when I bought my Bridgeport mill a few months ago.
    I had it strapped down like Gulliver and I also bolted it down to the trailer as well.
    My father said it wasn’t necessary but I said
    “Do you want to be on the 6 o’clock news with this laying on its side dug in the middle of the express way “
    It was a 400 kilometre drive (248 miles)

    They have a similarly sized radial arm drill press at the place I used to work, that thing was great. Had the hydraulic gear changer and stuff. Spun up to 2000 rpms. Old USSR made beast, solid as frig. Weeping oil in a lot of places but, straight as an arrow and about as rigid as they come.
    We're currently trying to get a better drill press for my current work place, so I managed to find a reasonably priced radial arm drill press, it's a small one, but hey better than that belt driven chinesium atrocity we have now. Hopefully the funding request goes through. Also upgrading the old power hacksaw, which does admittedly work just fine, but it'd be nice to have something that can cut some angles.
    IDK where Holzman is from but they're reasonably priced and don't look terrible, also a local sales office. Fingers crossed. I was trying to shoot for a lathe too, but the workshop manager apparently hates lathes, he thinks we need a mill for some reason which is silly, we'd be using a mill for the drill press and still wish we had a lathe to make press tools and whatnot.
    EDIT: Typo.

    That's a really nice trailer. I love how heavy duty the tongue is. Most factory made trailers that have gone through what yours has are just about worth scrapping by now. It's a good idea to get some new rubber on it before using it much more, a TR600HP has got to be pretty old to push through a wheel like that.

    That is just a nice size Radial Drill they are usually so large too large for us that would be great to have cannot wait to see what you are going to drill with it. Enjoy. Trailer is structurally looking good, just need an ABOM redo to look pretty again.

    As big as that drill is, I see you possibly setting it down on the slab there and just building a new shop around it ;)

    When you get around to rebuilding the trailer I would recommend LED lights all around. You already have the holes at the rear for flange mount turn/tail lights and the marker lights could be replaced with surface mount, rectangular lights. Anything incandescent with a separate base and light is a waste of money. They always fail at the same time. LED lights, shrinkable butt connectors are the way to go.

    Handy size Radial drill, now you need a vertical shaper

    Same drill in my bosses son shop paid 850.00 for it I built a steel beam table will take a pic . Works good in a structural shop to do base plates and beams . Wire brush and pressure wash on trailer.Mineral spirit will work best to clean.

    Trailer was pretty nice back in its day...Will be cool to see it restored!...Deck looked great back then, maybe a little wood sealer might help it last a bit longer??? and keep your friends off it!!! HA!
    Cool drill!

    Stella looked so young!! The paint didn't hold up the best on your trailer, was it a rattle can job I assume? I really just came here to see how many times someone said to not drop it............... lost count at about 100!!! lol

      It was paint brush and Hammetone paint out of the can. I’ll get it cleaned up and recoated. Total shame at all the drop comments.

    My dad and I built a 40 ft trailer out of a mobile home frame many years ago and someone stole it. He was so pissed to find it gone after we got back from Louisiana back in 1990. He didn't have no insurance on it either. It had triple axles under it. We used it to haul his house boat on it.

    Considering it's vintage and today's date (Pearl Harbor was yesterday) I imagine this old girl must have contributed to the war effort. We had a shipyard in Quincy MA and an armory in Watertown MA and lots more all over the region. All gone. Oh well, everything changes. Have fun with your new toy.

    Suggestion for your trailer: after you strip your deck off get 2 pieces 6"x1-1/2 channel the length of your trailer deck, lay it open side up spaced by thirds length wise up your frame before you put the deck back on it. then weld D rings in it every 4 feet. another option of this same vein if you a have either a water jet or plasma table at work is to cut chain pockets like on the bed of a wrecker every couple of feet. I will send you a pic of my trailer so you get the idea.

    Nice drill Adam. I have the same size (4ft arm, 9" column) but it is an American Tool Works. I'm not sure how Carlton lubricated their machines but American used felt wicks. When I first got the drill all of the wicks were dirty and weren't moving any oil. One of them fed the main thrust bearing and I was glad I discovered it and got it changed before I did any heavy drilling with it. I've always heard that Carlton's were slightly better than Americans and even though our drills are considered baby's mine will easily drill a 1.5" dia. hole with no pilot hole in mild steel. Yours should do that and maybe more. Ken

      @Abom79  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      It should handle a bigger drill then that. Let’s shoot for 2.5”

      If it will drill 2.5" with no pilot hole I'll be suitably impressed. Ken

    • @bcbloc02
      @bcbloc02 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      No it is in fact a little drill , it would fit under the column on my Carlton and I could reach all the way over it and mine is really just amid size with a 19" column and 7ft swing. :-)
