This video received some bad comments because of the blood thing in the performance and I was thinking to delete it but for me the blood seems fake since it starts to gush and it is possible to use fake blood capsules for this, the texture and the color for me doesn't really look like of real blood. In my opinion the self-mutilation phase of Kyo has gone totally (at least on the stage) because he seems a much better person than the one from 10 years ago and if he does something like that again I think it is solely to intensify the performance.
There's no reason to remove the video. I do think this reappearance of fish-hooking is a good opportunity to have critical conversations about it though. It being potentially a bad influence to depressed teens is just a part of the issue. There's also the toxic culture of perpetuating the myth that artist must suffer for the art and their admirers should reward them for the sacrifice. It's incredibly harmful for artists. It ruins lives and careers. Even if it has somewhat subsided in the recent years, there are still plenty of people all too ready to sweep away criticism by saying Kyo is so passionate that he just must channel the pain in the lyrics into his performance. The more painful the performance and higher the stakes, the better. Fish-hooking and barely singing the lyrics while bloody? Pretty good. Almost blowing your voice for good and probably causing permanent damage to your voice due to bad vocal techniques and overworking? Great dedication. I think all that is bad. I think those older performances where Kyo punished himself were musically inferior and the bloody theatrics were at best a marginal improvement on the overall show. I remember loving the studio Withering to Death and hating many of the sloppy live performances that followed. They were probably real and nuanced reasons for their problems back then, but boy do I have little nostalgia for the fish-hooking. What makes it worse is seeing how good he can be. Almost all the performances post-DSS and voice scare have been phenomenal. Kyo can sing so much better with some discipline and more sustainable techniques. Performing with his voice, hands and eyes, instead of gimmicks. Even the fanbase has matured to the point that the discussion can be more often than not about the music and musicianship and not how cute and tortured Kyo is. That's why the throw-back is such a bummer. To be clear, it's really not a bad performance. Just something that brings back some bad memories and associations. I'm also totally aware of the subject matter. Still don't like the destructive stuff. Fake or not.
I agree with you. I think he just want to give the feeling of WTD Era since they are visiting their old albuns and activating their respective "modes". But yeah I hate to see him doing these things, I hate to see him hurting himself because I love him so much and I feel bad seeing him doing these things. Thank you so much for posting those videos from Dir en Grey in those amazing tours. They just get better with the pass of time, they music will live forever. Well, about the self-mutilation stuff, Kyo has stoped doing it around 2010, when his got engaged to a beautiful model. Some gossips from staffs of that time said that he stoped doing the self-multilation because of her, even if it was something that giving him pleasure and he liked to use it to make a shocking and amazing perfomance, with a lot of blood, pain, screams and drama. I personally love those old times, those shows was the most delicious and perfect thing on earth to me, but like many fans, I did not like to see him hurt himself. It made us think that maybe something was going wrong in his personal life, that he was trying to get some pain out of him somehow, or even problems with drugs. Or it was just his personal taste, we won't never know. Anyway, if those speculations are true, we know he's still married to that same model. So, I think that maybe Kyo just started doing the self-mutilation again because the band is in these old spirit, bringing back the old musics to the stage. The only thing that we don't know is if he is doing this for old or new reasons, unless he tell us, of course. About the blood being real or not, I don't know, it really doesn't seem real, but we can expect anything coming from him, because he likes it, so it's ok for me. Well, for me, it doesn't matter wharever Kyo does, it doesn't matter wharever any member of Dir en Grey does, they will always be my favorite band and Kyo will always be my favorite vocalist. Actually youre wrong. People who are suicidal hear or see this sort of thing gain confidence and do go through with the act of taking their life. Its literally a proven fact. Majority of suicides recorded throughout history show this as a fact. I do agree with the others though. Seeing this isnt going to make someone wanna go be a pedophile, killer, or eat another person. I love the music but I’m not super thrilled with Kyo glamorizing self harm in front of an impressionable audience. Seems pretty irresponsible for a guy in his 40s who knows full well that a lot of his young fans practically worship him.
