Asparagus is a great crop to start now. It takes 2-3 years to establish the bed. After the initial work of planting, it takes care of itself mostly. My Asparagus bed is one of my favorite beds in the garden, because it's very little work, delicious reward and the plants are pretty until winter. You're not a wannabe homesteader....you're doing it, so you're a homesteader! Own it. 😉❤

Ok I like a crop that takes care of itself! Ahhh thank you for saying we're doing it! It really IS starting to feel that way PJ!

A quad and small trailer will help you greatly around the farm and perhaps sea weed collections .

Did my husband pay you to say that Philip?? 😂 To be fair, I totally agree... it's all about cash flow priorities though and with a cottage to renovate AND a homestead to start sometimes we have to wait for some things 😊

@CoriLivestheDreamLife no, no he didn't give me €20 to say that😂 I swear...

Cori, you are right to plant your asparagus first. The plants need to get well established before you can start to harvest. That is at least five years. Or that is how I was always taught. Another gardener might say different. I planted asparagus, but then we moved,so I can't verify. Cori,it's great to be along with you seeing you (and your family) learning as you go,working it out for yourself. I bake my own bread, not sourdough,I use a good brand of dried yeast. But if I do happen to see a good yellow sticker sliced loaf at a good reduced price I do sometimes buy that. But I don't need to. That makes a huge difference. That lamb has adopted YOU. He wants to be at your place. Can you put a simple shelter for him. And in a few months time - lunch!

I'm glad you think so! We did get some stick from family and friends about that decision haha! So pleased to have you along for the journey with us Jane!
Hahaha not sure if our friend who owns the flock would be best pleased if his lamb became our lunch 😂😂😂

Hi, Cori! Great to see your dream unfold and gradually come true. Congrats!
I've been making kefir at home non-stop for over a year now, and I have my favorite strands/cultures I can wholeheartedly recommend. My wife calls them my pets and she's so, so right :) They need to be tended to every day, and give so much back!
Each one has its own character which develops over time, but they both result in the most yummy kefir ('keh-fir' sounds closest to the original Turkish pronunciation) that you can't buy in any shop. It has a natural texture of a whipped cream and produces litres of a super healthy whey that I drink daily and really miss whenever I'm travelling.
If you're interested in trying them out, let me know. I'm just across the bay in the beautiful Galway, so we can get that sorted.
Also, if you ever in need of music for your clips, feel free to grab anything from my channel. Wishing you all the best!
    Witek

I totally know what you mean about them feeling like pets - I feel that way about my sourdough starter!! Oh my goodness your kefir description has me salivating.
I really appreciate the offer of trying them out, I may well be in touch! And that's so kind about the music too 😊

Since you're into baking, why not try Brown Bread ? It's super easy to make, just mix the dry ingredients first. then add an egg, and then 500mls Buttermilk. Just get everything wet and put it into your loaf tin. It's a modified Darina Allen recipe.
    Ingredients:
    - 1lb Extra Coarse wholemeal flour (Howards and/or Macroom Organic or 50-50)
    - 1 tsp brown sugar (optional - I no longer use this, no need)
    - 1 tsp bread soda (sieved)
    - 2 or 3 table spoons Flahavan's porridge oats (dry)
    - 1 to 1.5 tbl spoon of flaxseed (optional suggestion: :use Linwoods Milled Organic Flaxseed)
    - 1 tsp wheatgerm (Holland and Barrett sell a big bag for small price)
    - 1 tsp salt
    - 1 egg - crack it into a cup first, so no eggshells get into bread.
    - 500ml buttermilk
    Method:
    1. Place all the dry ingredients into a large bowl and mix briefly.
    2. Then add in the wet ingredients (Egg first, then Buttermilk) and combine together gently until all the dry ingredients are moistened, I usually use a large tablespoon.
    3. Then place mixture in a greased two-pound loaf tin, bake in a central position in the preheated oven for 70 mins at 180 degrees (electric fan oven), covered with foil (protects it from being burnt).
    4. After 70 minutes, remove from tin, wrap in a clean tea towel, turn upside down (NB) and allow to cool on a wire rack.

Oh wow thank you for sharing the recipe Peter I'm definitely going to try that, it sounds delicious! I've saved that and I'm thinking next week once I get a couple of the ingredients I'm missing. Love something new to try!

@@CoriLivestheDreamLife No worries ! Actually instead of greasing the loaf tin I now use the so much easier silicone inserts. I've been making this bread for so long now it takes 10 mins to have ready to go.

Nice updates, moving forward in any direction is always a good thing. Things happen when they're supposed to. I've been curious about sour dough bread, a few other channels I watch also make it.

Thanks Cori for another great vid. Just to say I had a go at growing asparagus over 3 years and I only ever got the tiniest thin stalks. I hope you have better luck with it.x

Farmhouse on Boone here on TH-cam shares about dairy kefir (keee-fur) and water kefir. She has wonderful ideas for sourdough. You might like some of her ideas. 💚💚💚 You are aware it takes two - three years for asparagus to root and take hold before you will harvest? 💚💚💚
