    I really appreciated that this film had a deliberately unlikeable female protagonist from the offset, and that they didn't try to redeem Danni just because she was a woman. Danni isn't even really sorry about lying in the first place, only that she got caught.

      @Tiré A I could be wrong but I think they only put that message in after a few of the pre screenings because the watchers at the test screenings complained about Danni being unlikeable. So it's put there as a light-hearted / "jokey" heads-up due to people who had actually taken an issue to her. But @Ayanna Branchcomb makes a good point about how unlikeable male protagonists aren't viewed in this same light in media and society and wouldn't need this warning

I haven't watched a lot of Dylan's movies aside from the first maze runner but for what he was given I think he did a good job at male influencers. In my opinion Mia Isaac was the standout in this. I honestly thought it was refreshing that the protagonist did not learn a lesson or get a happy ending like in most movies. To me, it showed that she wasn't upset by the fact that she did what she did; it was because she was upset that she got caught and had to be forced to suffer the consequences of said actions, just like in real life. In real life, people who have the balls to pull this stunt do not get their redemption arc. I feel that's what truly saved this movie.

    • @rjpal1217
      @rjpal1217 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Wait, I'm a little confused. Do you mean that not giving a redemption arc means she will not be forgiven and she should be hated on social media forever? I’m trying to understand what it means

    • @emmahoover2016
      @emmahoover2016 2 ปีที่แล้ว +26

      @@rjpal1217 i think what they mean is that the movie is a more accurate depiction of real life. many movies with “unlikeable protagonists” give these characters a redemption arc. i feel as though that real life can be very black and white on these matters. for example, dani’s parents will eventually forgive her as seen in how they begrudgingly take her in after she’s “cancelled.” rowan will most likely never forgive dani, and rightfully so, what dani did was horrendous. a redemption arc, in my opinion, is a storyline that makes all that someone did forgiven, whether they work for it or not. i like some redemption arcs and i hate others. in my honest opinion, dani did not deserve a redemption arc. it does not mean that her life will continue to be as hell-ish as depicted in the end of the movie. but people in real life need to be held accountable for what they do, showing a storyline that forgives dani and “wipes away her sins” would be a) unrealistic and b) a normalization of her atrocious behavior.

    i like how they handle various messages. danni's lie serves as how desensitived influencers, especially yt influencers, are to tragic events through how she sees it as a way she can just accelerate her fame on the internet. and then at the nightclub with danni and colin yelling "fuck terrorists" also further shows how the internet is desensitized to events. even though this film was filmed last year, which is obvious due to the microtrends, that ends up helping show danni's desire to be known by displaying how much she wants to keep up. and then with the character of rowan we get the opposite: someone who survived an tragic event and did not want the fame but ends up using it for good. furthermore on rowan, we also see how yt influencers benefit off of black people. a costuming detail i noticed when i watched the film is that danni's outfit at the rally with rowan is extremely similar to rowan's style, showing how she is mooching off of rowan's activism and how she's not being honest about herself. rowan's monologue at the end is a physical representation of bipoc individuals taking back the mic by her calling out how danni mistreated and betrayed her. outside of the film we further see how poc are often looked over in favor of their yt counterparts. while mia issac was arguably the backbone of the film, a lot of people on the internet are heavily focused on dylan o brien, which as trin mentioned is not in that much of the film. the most unrealistic part of the film, which helped the film in my opinion, is the ending and danni's lack of a redemption arc. if we're being honest, cancel culture does not really exist because a lot of influencers who get cancelled will still be "forgiven" by their fans and the people that they did not offend and will still go on with their lives.

    • @erzlinthewatcher
      @erzlinthewatcher 2 ปีที่แล้ว +59

      I don't think the that last part was unrealistic. Danni had no influence to begin with and only gained traction from fame about a disaster that didn't even happen to her. Once everyone knew that was fake her not being forgiven makes sense. Her previous content didn't really stick. No one liked her for her. Everyone emphatic to follow, but not stick around. She's a regular person who gained influence almost over night. She never had a fan base.

      Tbh, I noticed white women seem to do this often whenever a film does not center on them or portray them in the best light. They’ll shift the spotlight to someone white, just so they don’t have to acknowledge or give recognition to the black or person of color star. I really liked this movie. It was refreshing to see a coming of age story that wasn't rooted in romance or visually appealing aesthetics. It's simply a film about an emotionally detached, socially oblivious 20 something year old who is in way over her head. I actually do feel like Danni changed for the better. Danni seems to develop feelings of sympathy for the first time in her life through her friendship with Rowan. The scene where the trauma group is associating their feelings with colors really stuck out to me. When Danni gets flustered and visualizes her color as a numbing gray, I felt that. Zoey Deutch did a really good job portraying a character whose mental health struggles have consumed her to the point where she doesn't even realize how broken she is since all of those unhealthy feelings have become so normal to her.

Like how Zoey’s character was completely unaware of triggers from trauma and no one really commented on how inappropriately she responded in some of those scenes was kinda weird to me. this movie is different than something i’d usually watch, so i almost don’t know what to feel. i just finished it, and wow. i really enjoy when main characters aren’t perfect, or when they’re just so deeply dislikable (like danni). mia isaac’s character Rowan got the most emotion out of me i think. and i love zoey deutch’s movies, she always does a really good job.
    it’s interesting bc she actually had shit she could’ve written about. her depression and how, though she’s from a wealthy background and should seemingly have everything, she doesn’t bc her mental health is in shambles. or she could’ve brought up her and her mother’s relationship (the part where her mom says she hasn’t said “i love you” much. i think that’s probably caused danni some internal issues).

    Mia absolutely blew me away. I agree about the ending, the only thing I would change though is that I wouldn't show Danni's reactions to the monologue at all, I'd focus on Rowan the whole time and then just at the very end I'd show a glimpse of Danni leaving.

  • @honibearss

    i loved the movie because of the clear contrast between dani and rowan. i thought the writing was so smart of how when dani comforts rowan, although sweet, has the perspective of an outsider of trauma. like the way she approaches conversations with rowan makes it obvious nothing has happen to dani herself.

  • @moreonthisat7393
    @moreonthisat7393 2 ปีที่แล้ว +14

    I honestly thought that after harper exposed dani and gave her that ultimatum, that dani would try and kill her, since she's so desperate for fame. The movie went in the nice tame route (excluding the whole lying about being apart of a tragedy), but I would totally be here for a murder cover up story.

    I really liked how the characters were portrayed ,including Colin , I feel like he wasn't meant to be that funny but more of like a white boy getting famous for acting black, which I think Dylan portrayed really well (and I think his character was meant to be a bit cringey). Also I Really agree about Mia

    I actually really liked this movie, it tricked us into watching a movie about something very important (gun violence in US schools and ptsd) by having an outlandish premise to suck us in.
    Also compared to The Wolf of Wall Street (which he ruined 100s to 1000s of peoples lives) it’s really amusing when that guy gets off pretty easy (he’s a motivational speaker now 💀). Compared to someone like the lead who needs a warning. I think the warning was supposed to be facetious and have that A Promising Young Woman kinda bite. But instead of Danni being the MC it was Rowan’s movie but a lot of people wouldn’t watch Rowan’s movie, definitely not for fun. The actress who played Rowan did an amazing job.

    Something no one talks about really is how weird Rowan and Danni's relationship is. Like Danni puts Rowan on this pedestal and acts like Rowan's both her hero and her bestie and both are weird. It reminds me a lot of Sia and Maddie Ziegler. Also the fact that her mother was letting her do all this amazing but very raw and public work while she's a child who is clearly struggling and needing therapy is ..... questionable.

    If it were me, I'd say I got on an earlier flight, which resulted in getting there at nighttime, and then photoshopped it to look like daytime.
    Owns up to any fakeness caught in the pictures, and still maintains the lie without making it worse.
    Wouldn't have to lie about going sightseeing, either, cause they'd all be closed.
    Also also, could claim the retreat was canceled because of the attacks, so she hopped on a flight home.
