Labyrinth was also one of my favorite movies, and still is. However, I felt that the goblins in that film resonated more with concept of the goblin as put forth in the Romantic Period of literature - a less fair mischievous fey complete with strange little snarlings and quirks and artifacts, like knucklebones made from the actual knucklebones of naughty children. Of course that would make Jareth something like an Arch-fey which honestly works, I think.
I love putting goblins on weird mounts . I once had a tribe of goblins take a rope and tie one end to a hunting trap , and the other around a docile aurochs . They then dip the aurochs tail in tar . When in combat , they ride the docile beast towards the adventurers, and toss the hunting trap at them. If it hits , the goblins jump off the aurochs , and light the aurochs tail on fire with a torch , causing the aurochs to charge off In pain and anger , dragging the poor adventurer behind it until they’re able to free themselves . My players loved it 🎉
I had an entire short campaign born out of the realization of an odd use of a...mount is the wrong word, goblin delivery system. Ogre Howdahs carry four goblins each so if you feather fall the five ogres... I hadn't known I needed goblin airdrops until that moment. And then I needed it badly.
I'm stealing this. Imagine the sheer rage of the nearby orc tribe when they find out what these goblins have been doing with their sacred animal. I want a recurring NPC to be a Baghtru devotee on a revenge-fueled quest to break the legs of every goblin in the land - with his bare hands of course.
@esperthebard vanilla goblins make me suspicious there are hardcore goblins and bdsm loving goblins. And those I can't bring to my table. My players are not to be trusted with that info. 😅
I'm actually playing a goblin druid in a campaign. His best friend in the party is a bugbear ranger that he's been traveling with for a while and honestly, it's a great dynamic. The bugbear left his tribe because he hated robbing people and using violence to get his way, but still struggles with people seeing him as a thuggish brute. The goblin was raised by a pacifist circle of druids. He's despised by some and seen as little more than vermin, but is content with who he is, changing peoples' perceptions of him through his actions. He helps the bugbear to open up and embrace and accept who he is.
I have been emphasizing that goblins are dark fey creatures and not of the prime material world as well as their kin, Ogres, Ettins and Giant kind. So we never come upon mated communities. This gives them a more mysterious and mystical nature. Encounters are hunting parties and individuals wandering about finding their way to or from their home world.
sounds like I'll be looking forward to this news letter >:)

I find your worldbuilding really cool and extremely interesting! Have you ever thought of doing a series on the channel imparting some of your ideas and techniques to worldbuilder for people or is that covered in your newsletter? I would love to hear about your process of how you designed your world (top down or bottom up, etc.) Anyway, great work on your world sir, I am very impressed.
Love this video. Goblins get a bad rap as being forgettable pushover fodder types. There's soooo much potential with them. The players of my current campaign have found themselves caught in the middle of a 3 way goblin tribe war, and they have had a very rough time so far.
I am coming up with an adventure around the Nilbog! It’s going to be a silly kind adventure with some interesting kind of traps, like a spring tile trap that launches them into the air.
Personally, when I'd want to use goblins in a setting, I'd typically portray them as being mischievous, petty, spiteful, gullible, greedy, and about as good-looking as a somewhat ugly big-nosed gnome, though with some form of morality to temper their wicked urges, and instead of being evil-aligned like with D&D goblins, they'd usually be more neutrally aligned with a possibility to do both good and evil if the situation calls for it. (Basically, more like the goblins of World of Warcraft.) However, if I'd want to have some kind of typically nasty, wicked, unashamedly malevolent goblins in my settings, I'd probably use some kind of wicked goblinoid species such as redcaps instead, and have lore that could tie these malicious goblinoids as being ordinary goblins that have been corrupted into more evil forms, like how Gollum from Lord of the Rings used to be a Hobbit before his corruption brought about by his obsession with The One Ring.
I had a god like Vormag in a campaign world. His champion became a recurring villain the PCs hated and feared. They eventually out paid to him in a surprise battle where they or he were going down; though he’d intended to negotiate, they were having none of it.
I love who you twisted goblins. In my Endless Seas setting, I have them as a pest-like race created by Six Eyes (The God of Chaos) to spread chaos throughout the realms. They are very mischievous and cunning, known for capturing bug and other pests to send at their foes. However, they of a force of nature that needs to be cut back often to not become a threat. If left alone they will gain favor with their god,l gaining elemental magic that can destroy settlements. They are easily identified by their gray to green skin and spiked back, but if you see a bare back, run.
Fantastic idea. You're stuck on how a creature was created or why it is, look to their gods. Inspired by you, I made two gods. I thought I'm stuck in world building so I thought, how is the world... Gods. When working on a puzzle I always start at the end and work backwards. I love how you put our thoughts into words so we can apply actions :)

More negativity, (albeit passive-aggressively) on D&D from Esper, telling us what's wrong with D&D again, as I said you've done over the last 6 months, (constructively) in your last video. There's nothing wrong with Goblins in D&D. They're not "vanilla", (a crude term) nor do they need "spicing up." I'm starting to really dislike what this channel is becoming. You control your content... but I control the content on MY computer. Selling drama and provocations on YT is for manipulative and dishonest people. You're better than this Esper.
@@gadellomagnollo1810 I wouldn't know... I refused to watch the video. Think about what you Trolls are complaining about... someone who told Esper he's better than this, and apparently, you have a problem with that. Is that the mentality you want as a commentor Esper?!
Imo the most fun monsters are monstrous humanoids cause you can give them pretty much any type of gear and put them anywhere
Absolutely. They are highly versatile, which is one of their biggest strengths.
Very true. I always keep a couple weird humanoids and demihumans around just in case.

Occasionally, a goblin should forget to jump off the auroch after lighting the tail on fire.

Vanilla _is_ a spice. And it's glorious!
Actually I'm with you on that, but had a hard time figuring out a better way of phrasing it. Generic Goblins? Plain Goblins?
@esperthebard vanilla goblins make me suspicious there are hardcore goblins and bdsm loving goblins. And those I can't bring to my table. My players are not to be trusted with that info. 😅
Especially when mixed with some other spices to elevate them
A man of culture I see.
Clearly we need a tribe of Neapolitan goblins where the vanilla, strawberry and chocolate gobbos work in (tenuous) harmony.
I love everything ESPER THE BARD!!!
