the rye shades the earth and helps cool and keep moisture in - Cheers

Corn is calculating the number of rows around the cob it will produce between V3-V6 stage, so rye shading can alter that success. I plant into green standing rye then if I wait too much beyond V1/V2 to flatten the rye the corn starts looking spindly as it reaches for light. My rye is generally taller (variety maybe?). I did find that If the rye is flattened when planting it can start to dissolve in higher moisture/more active biology before the corn shades out the weeds. Your corn looks good so your testing worked out alright for your area. I'm planting all heirloom open pollinated corn and no chemicals. ... Grain Rye is known to drown out amaranth/pig weed over time so keep at it.

I think that looks great! A little more rain will help

  • @jackholman5008

You can lay the rye down too.that will help with the shading in the corn early stages

Yep the minute you're starting to see escapes you got to get after it. That is pretty gorgeous corn for 30 days. We are a little slow to get going in the spring. So emergence could be anywhere from 10 days to 20 + days depending on the year but we get very hot and tropical so the end of June July and August is the bulk of our growing season. It's amazing how much these plants can grow each day

It may just be an illusion of the camera but do you think the corn is any better next to tractor tracks where the rye was driven down? Corn looks awesome for sure. Adding fertilizer and having some herbicide effect for about $15 to $20 per acre is pretty appealing to me plus no dust or washouts on my hilly sandy ground as well water retention.

I hope you are right….that field looks alot like one of mine except mine is at 45 days since Planting …rye got terminated 12 days after planting…

Have you tried rolling the cover crop down? I have done that after terminating and it puts lots of mulch on the ground for my soybeans. Didn’t have to spray post in that field, weeds couldn’t compete.

  • @xiaoyunchen8232

How about you roll down the cover crops before you put corn seeds in ground?

I notilled corn into a thick stand of red clover , it was a hail Mary, real dry conditions but we got rain shortly after , it's finally trying to break through the clover biomass after about 3 weeks.

  • @sperfdairy2160

Your " escapes" are now resistant to what ever you sprayed

  • @gwc3721

Did you spray? Rye stove should help prevent windburn.

  • @rockgeluk9746

Rye and corn don’t mix. The yield is really going to suffer

Canada thistle has stopped me from pursuing organic, almost taken over the farm.
