  • No-till gardening can be difficult on a small scale. Today we show you how it can be done with a silage tarp and simple gardening tools.

    Thank you so much for showing this process. I was really looking forward to seeing how it turned out. I bet the corn will love the nitrogen that the Sunn Hemp fixed in the soil. I think this garden "strip-till" system has a lot of promise. Can't wait for part 2! I hope y'all have the best fall garden ever! Thanks for taking us along for the ride!

    Beautiful! I think you'll agree the amount of reduction for the amount of biomass is incredible! That sun hemp crop was more mass than I've had on my plots, I would say, but the process worked beautifully! You will see that remaining stubble gone pretty quickly. A little water along the way while your tarp is "cooking" works wonders too! Great job on documenting the process, I know I have enjoyed it, and others too! I'm heavily involved with my tarps right now myself! ;)

      You are right about adding some water throughout the process. Not a bad idea at all.

    Travis, I am pea green with envy!! Oh, to have the land to be able to dedicate an entire garden plot just to sweet corn!! I'd be in hog heaven, for sure!! Now that I have my drip tape layer, I sure will try another block of sweet corn - I'm betting I'll actually get a good stand putting it on drip tape!

    6a/b here (Ohio River Valley (Cincinnati-ish))
    We don't necessarily do a Spring/Fall corn planting on Sweet Corn at my place.
    Just a continual 2 to 3 week succession planting from beginning to end. Starting in early May, last planting early August.

    • @gardeningwithhoss
      @gardeningwithhoss  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's one way to do it as well! It gets so dang hot here in July/August and that's pretty rough on a maturing crop. But it can handle the heat early until the temp breaks in a few weeks.

    Nice! Did u get any soil tests done b4 u planted the sunn hemp cover crop and after u removed the spillage tarp? Would like to know how effective cover crop was in changing and improving soil 😊

    • @gardeningwithhoss
      @gardeningwithhoss  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      We did test it with a soil pH probe. The pH was good before the Sunn Hemp and didn't really change after the tarping process.

    Do you only spray the Spinosad on just the silk and ear covering itself, or on the entire plant ?Thank for the video and info.

    • @gardeningwithhoss
      @gardeningwithhoss  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you've got worms eating the entire plant and that's a concern, you can spray the whole plant. But for corn earworm control, the most important part is spraying the silks.

    Ive been following and doing this right along aith you, my first time doing this method by the way, and when i removed the tarp.....ants! Everywhere. What do you recommend to get them out of the garden. The solution doesnt neccesarily have to be organic. Thank you from dexter georgia, and keep up the great work

    • @gardeningwithhoss
      @gardeningwithhoss  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Uh oh! We didn't have any ants under ours. Ants don't like disturbance, so they should move once you start working the area.

    Hey I got another question for ya.... after y’all grind up your cover crop what if you just dosed it heavy with water to help the decomposition process? Or even halfway through the decomposition process maybe pull the tarp back and dose it good one time with overhead sprinkler? I want to see how good it crumbles up after the sun hits it for a few days...

    • @gardeningwithhoss
      @gardeningwithhoss  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You could do that. Have even heard of folks injecting some fish emulsion into that water dosing to feed the soil as well.

    Can you still get in a crop of corn?! What’s the days to maturity? I’m in southern VA, Zone 7. When’s y’all first frost date, usually?

    • @gardeningwithhoss
      @gardeningwithhoss  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Our average first frost date is around November 30th. If you've got 70-80 days before the first frost date, you've still got time.

    Thanks for the video but I don't understand so you plant the corn seeds right on top of the drip tape that you buried? While the corn is growing The Roots don't bother the drip tape underneath it??
    Thanks for getting back to me when you get a chance

    Travis, no till is you go against the wall. I get that. But, let me tell you something. What no till is all about is the microbs in the soil. Now, you can either take about 3 years to really get that established or you can use something with microbes in it.... it's still organic, it's still no till.. but it's what makes those plots work. I suggest BIO-SI Go look it up. Or you all might have something that will do the same thing. I wish you the very very best.. Love your shows.

    I had big plans for working in my garden this long weekend... but God has other plans for us... working on boarding up, and getting ready for that hurricane. Have several houses to get ready... so no garden except maybe taking down my trellis I just put up last weekend... no sense in letting get all tore up.... I'm guessing I won't be picking any pole beans at this point. Very annoying my fall peas are really looking excellent... best stand of peas I've had in a very long time. Planted them on top of where I had sun hemp... guessing I won't be picking any of them either... last time we had a tropical storm we it tore up the place bad... really bad, and this looks like it's gonna be worse. :( We just take it day by day... grow a bunch of corn, us Florida people might need to come and pick some up. :)

    After you plant your corn. Have you thought about broad casting a clover over the plot?

    • @gardeningwithhoss
      @gardeningwithhoss  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Haven't considered that. Corn is a heavy-feeder -- not sure we would want something close that could potentially rob nutrients from it.

    • @SgtSnausages
      @SgtSnausages 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Doesn't Clover add N to the soil?
      Me? I'd be more worried about the Clover goin' to seed and becoming a long-term issue in my rotation.

    • @generic_Ryan
      @generic_Ryan หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yeah clover is a nitrogen fetcher. It won't rob the soil I stead it'll enrich it

    Is the tarp porous? Does it let rain water through it?

    • @gardeningwithhoss
      @gardeningwithhoss  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It is not porous and does not let rainwater through. But this subplot is below several other plots so it does get some moisture through runoff.

    No compost under the drip?

    • @gardeningwithhoss
      @gardeningwithhoss  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Not this time. 1) We were out of compost and should be getting a new load soon, but wanted to get this planted now. 2) We kinda wanted to see the results of the Sunn Hemp cover crop by itself.

    Would B.T. be ok for worms? How often would you spray it? Once a week?

    • @gardeningwithhoss
      @gardeningwithhoss  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      B.t. works on many worms, but has not been proven to work on corn earworms. Some sources say it works, others say it doesn't. But spinosad definitely works on earworms!

      @gardeningwithhoss  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      That plot has been tilled at some point, but it hadn't been tilled prior to this video. We have some plots that are pretty sandy, and others with more clay.

    Not scalable

    • @gardeningwithhoss
      @gardeningwithhoss  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not if you're doing an acre or more of production. But it will work great for gardens from a couple thousand square feet up to an acre -- especially if the garden area is divided into subplots like we have.
