I'm thinking of making some of these for my preschool class. We have several that will be going into kindergarten that are learning to read and write. I thought this would be great for them to use. Also, I have a student with serious illness and will be at the hospital a lot. I thought my students could make him pictures and notes in one to give him. A couple years ago, I made mini albums for each to add photos and decorate. I used chipboard, cardstock, and scrapbook paper. The floral paper you are using in this journal is the same paper we used.
That would be such a great idea for a preschool class. They could fill it with their own memories throughout the year. It would also make a great journal for your student that is ill. I imagine journaling and having inspirational messages could be comforting. 😇🙏🏼❤️

This is fascinating - I love it! I still have a collection of Little Golden Books from when I was a toddler - I'm in my 50s now! So this could be a great way to upcycle and get more use out of them. I will have to go back and watch this again, though, because I somehow missed the part where you made the spine WIDER. It was originally, like, an eighth of an inch or so - and now it looks to be about an inch & a half, maybe? Not sure on that because I never measure anything either, LOL, but you get my meaning, I hope. The covers are rigid, so I don't think they would fold well - and I didn't notice you splitting the foil part on the outside open to make it wider .. so I will have to figure that part out. I love the idea - these books have filled many lonely afternoons for me when I was a kid - so it would be nice to be able to utilize them again!! Thank you for the "thumbs up" video~!
Thank you. I plan on making more videos using Little Golden Books. I’ll try to explain the size of the spine in the next video which will be a flip through of 2 that I made. Once you take the book apart it gives you about 1/8” more on each side of the gold spine so the book is about 1 3/8” or so. The gold spine is very thin so I reinforce it with 2 layers of chip board to make it equal to the cover thickness which is rigid. I wish I had my LGBs from when I was a kid, I only have the ones from my own kids. My next video will be a flip through I made for my son to use as a travel journal for photos and keepsakes. Thanks for watching my videos ❤️
Every you tube crafter has a differemt. ethodand decoratinge ach book for creating the spine and binding journals they make with log books I’ve watched dozens all are beautiful
When I measure my string I take the length of the spine and triple it. Unless I want an extra long string to add embellishments then I’ll do 3 1/2 to 4 times. I’ll do a video short so you can see how I do it.
Just subscribed to your channel. Question: how much did you trim off from the golden book? Is it necessary to? Did you add any washi tape, etc to the golden book pages. Just wandering because I have some vintage/old books that not sure if the pages will hold up. Thank you. Great video!
All very good questions. So I’ve always cut about 1/4” off but I think what I’ll do is a video not cutting any of the pages and using a vintage book. I’ve also never used washi tape on the pages. I’d like to see how well they hold up as well. Give me a few days and I’ll try to post the video soon. Thanks for subscribing ❤️😇
What is the glue your using? My dad had a golden book collection of over 350 books. Before he passed he got rid of it and I'm so sad I didn't keep them.
Oh no, I’m so sorry. 🙏🏼. I use different types of glue depending on my needs. I’ll try to make a quick video today showing you the different types. I use UHU glue stick for paper; Art Glitter Glue for paper, cardstock and trim - it has absolutely no glitter - it’s just the name; Fabri-tac for fabric, trim and some heavy paper. Also used Deco Art gloss glaze for my Golden Spine. 😊
Can you tell me if you cut the pages along the inside where they used to be enclosed in the spine and hinging them instead of cutting them off at the outside edges...it ends up cutting off about 3/4" on the outside edges otherwise and white showing on the inside where they were previously in the enclosed stapled spine??? I am making one for an expectant mommy and not sure how you did that part...I love this just struggling with this part...PLEASE HELP❤
I cut the outside edge, and does take off about 3/4”. I’ve been lucky that my stories have all stayed in tact and not cut off. Are you disassembling the book like I did? Depending on the book you should be ok with trimming it. Another idea is to add to the edge of the cover. If you give me a couple of days I can upload a video showing you how to do that. Let me know if you have any other questions. 🥰
@Craft_shop_girl thank you so much for getting back to me so quickly! I went ahead and cut the pages that were enclosed in the spine and hinged them. I didn't really have a choice because a few of the pages' words were to close to the outter edges. I am curious as to how you extend the cover or other ideas you might have, I really hated doing the hinges especially on this particular LGB it's the LGB about God with Elouise Wilkin..I might end up putting washi over the hinges to help...thank you so much for any help❤
Hi Kelly. Thanks for watching my video. I am currently working on a new journal that I will upload this coming weekend. I’ll make sure to make a demonstration video of the template for you. It’ll be a short video just for the template. 🥰
Just point the heat gun on the side of the spine. It will start to left and you can use twizzers to to keep from touching . It will be hot. It should come up in one piece. I use a tape runner to Apple it back to the book once I decide how I want to bind it. It’s very easy.
This was a very informative video! I love the idea of using Little Golden Books to create these Junk Journals. I’ve subscribed to your channel. And being someone that has hands affected by RA, I notice beautiful hands like yours. Thank you so much!😁
I’m still learning to navigate my TH-cam channel and just saw your response. Thank you so much subscribing. I’ve always been self conscious about my hands and almost didn’t start a channel because of showing my hands. But your kind words mean so much ~ thank you 🥰
I also save the spines. I bind them with a ring binder or with a spiral binding using my Cinch. I just bought the new thermal Cinch so I might try that.
Hopefully this translates properly. The baking soda is used in old books that have a musty smell. Baking soda gets rid of the odor. Thanks for watching and let me know if you have more questions.

The book has a gold spine that is existing. I used a gloss over it to protect it. I really don’t know how long it will last on an old book. I think it would also depend on how you care for it. I’m working on videos to decorate. I do have a couple I’ve made showing how I make my tags, bellybands and playing cards. 😊💕
I love Junk Journals. I want to make them in future❤
It’s so easy to start and so satisfying. It can be as easy as finding things you have around the house. The idea is to just start ❤️

Love how you preserve the Golden Spine! Awesome Tutorial!
Thank you so much. These are so fun to make 🤩
Ty for the tutorial! I love how you preserved the golden spine! 😊
You are so welcome! That’s my favorite part… the iconic Golden Spine 💛
Heat your spine next time with a heat gun and golden spine will come right off, just remove getly, then you can remove your staples . Great tutorial
Thank you. Someone else mentioned using a heat gun. I need to try that on my next one. It’s such. Great idea. Thanks again 🥰

Congrats on preserving the original golden foil spines so beautifully!
You were a great help I am planning to make one for my great granddaughter Beaty and the Beast I am happy I found you thank you Theola
That sounds wonderful!!! So many things you could add to Beauty & the Beast 💛
Put vaseline around rim of lid of glues or paints. This makes it easier to open since it won't stick
Omg! Really!?! I struggle and that would make things easier. Thanks for the tip!! 🥰🙏🏼
I was interested in seeing how you kept the spine intact. Nice job! I love making LGB junk journals. New subbie!
Thanks for subbing! I love making them too. I’m hoping to finish a couple more this week. 😊🙏🏼💕
Thank you for very informative video. I love you keep book cover in tact. Very cute journal you have made
Thank you so much! 😊
I love how you did the spine. Thanks for sharing!

I love that you keep the gold spine. It's a very important part of the little 'golden' books!! Great job!
Thank you so much. I think it’s important too. Those books are small treasures ❤️
Great video. I think I might be able to tackle one now. Thank you so much..
You can do it! If you have any questions please feel free to reach out ☺️
This is so great! I have two related LGBs, and now I know how to use both!
They are so much fun! I keep buying more 🤭
Great spine idea!!!!
Thank you 🥰

Thanks so much 😊
