The thing is, +1 CAN be a big deal, especially when you only ever deal 1 or 2, that's a ×2 or ×1.5 increase, and then also when that +1 happens to multiple things [cough cough *ball*]. Maybe if we already dealt tons of damage then yeah, +1 isn't much, but there's ALSO the fact that it's too easy to LOWER your attack. Even equipping a way to heal lowers attack. I'm not trying to call you stupid, I'm just multiplying your informedness. That is not a word, I could have said that better but I won't.

Enemies at this point in the game deal like 2-4 damage max, a single defense+ can reduce enemy damage output by like 25%, and god forbid that attack be a multihit since then defense+ applies to every hit

Ok I guess it's not so obvious, but difficulty is I guess more attack is better than less damage UNLESS you don't attack, but without the harder action commands, I guess everyone would go attacker because it's so easy and everything would die and the game would be easy and you don't want games to be too easy. It's a matter of perspective.
