Hi, Chris again. Back in the nineties over here in England Uncut had an issue devoted to New Sounds from the South West. Fantastic compilation CD and various people mentioned including Bruntnell and Buckner. Funnily enough I was listening to the latter's album with Jon Langford just last night. I bought most of the recommendations but I rarely hear about Willard Grant Conspiracy, Nadine, Hazeldine, Red Star Belgrade, Freakwater and some others. Looking forward to your next selection.

Hey Thanks! I love getting turned on to new, great stuff (even tho -much as I wish I WAS-I’m not a vinyl collector😢.) But I’ve subscribed, because good music’s good howEVer you hear it, and you clearly have great taste. Yes, please do more of these! ~Dale /MplsMN✌🏼

Great suggestions! I already have them all.
Another suggestion would be Anders Parker “Tell it to The Dust” and his band Varnaline “Songs in A Northern Key” - both great records and he has toured and recorded with Jay Farrar

Thanks for reminding me about the Farrar/Gibbard album. I've never listened to the full album, but I listened to a few of the songs on TH-cam and absolutely loved These Roads Don't Move and had forgotten about it. Gonna correct that and get a copy somewhere.

Saw Peter Bruntnell supporting Son Volt last summer. Was lucky to see them all at Levon Helms studio. Great night of music and story telling. Got my new Son Volt record signed by all the band also.

I was managing Bull Moose when that Kerouac record came out. I have the cd but I am not lucky enough to own it on vinyl. I used to play that in the shop all of the time. Damn, The Gourds, I haven’t heard them in years. Sounds like my kinda night. Drinking, live music, Thin Lizzy, and the Dallas Cowboys!!! Woo hoo!!!
Great to see you, hope you are well.
    Cheers☘️

Good call on The Gourds. I caught them live a few times here in Austin, and they are one of the few bands that I feel was able to capture their general live sound on record. Maybe their live shows were rowdier, but their albums were pretty loose and very fun. I'm particularly fond of "Ghosts of Hallelujah", but there are gems on every one of their albums. Their cover of Billy Joe Shaver's 'Omaha', which was originally recorded by Waylon Jennings on the "Honky Tonk Heroes" album, is perfection.

"Ghosts of Hallelujah" is great. That would've been the third record I mentioned.

Hi. I will explore some of these. Thx. Have you ever listened to James McMurtry? I think you’d really like him, most specifically ‘Too Long in the Wasteland’ . Weirdly, the opening track is a throwaway; but the rest of the album is amazing - especially ‘Song for a Deck hands daughter’ and ‘Crazy Wind.’

I do know McMurtry. Will check out that record as I really only know his latest, which is very good.

Hey there! I love The Gourds. I’ve not talked about them in the VC for the same reason I’ve not talked about a lot of Americana bands from the late 90s, I don’t have any of their albums on vinyl…In fact, as you well know, most albums from around that time were never released on vinyl. Luckily some of those have lately found their way onto vinyl, but so many of my favourites haven’t.
    Cheers - Hedley

Also, check out John Frusciante: Curtains, Tobin Sprout: Empty Horses, Hiss Golden Messenger: Lightness of Dancers. I'm surprised HGM don't get more recognition in general. Nice idea for a video Chris.

There’s also an eponymous record Buckner sold at live shows with alternate versions of songs from D&D and Since that’s worth seeking out

Hi Chris, hope you are doing well. Yes, you are quite correct; how in the world, well, at least my world, have people never heard about Richard Buckner?!? I keep telling anyone that will listen about him over the past 5-6 years but have only gotten one other person interested. "Dents and Shells," from 2004 may be my favorite. But, on any given day that can change depending on my mood. Found this gem on TH-cam a few years back. He does a great cover of "Love Will Tear Us Apart." Andrew Duplantis is helping out on bass. Phenomenal...

The Gourds’ cover of “Gin and Juice” was the most downloaded song in Napster history. Maybe not. I have Dog Days and Bloomed. Essential Americana albums imo. I guess I’ll revisit the Farrar/Gibbard and see if it actually hits me this time. It did nothing for me upon its release. Bruntnell is the only unfamiliar artist to me.
So there’s that Americana Vinyl Tag going around…
