- Eamonn O'Neal and Nicky Fox try out two Asian made cars - the Proton Persona Xli and the Mitsubishi Charisma GLX, both of which come equipped with a 1.6L engine. They are tested in urban traffic to see which one has better value for money as a daily commuter.

The Carisma was a facelift model ahead of that Proton. Both based on the Mitsubishi Lancer. As Mitsubishi updated its model the older panel machines were passed on to Proton.

Proton Persona is a Mitsubishi Carisma in disguise plus feels cheap and very characterless in Proton went bust.
Never understood why Mitsubishi didn't just release this generations Lancer instead of the Carisma or licensing out the model to Proton. The Persona is literally almost a fully rebadged Lancer/Mirage anyhows... so confusing

yeah i had a 1.8l gdi carisma and one thing i have to say is that carismas seme to have a slight play in the steering wheel my mom had a 98 carisma 1.6l my moms friend has one and then i had one and all of them had a few milimeters of play in the steering

+Ian Gibbons : I see, this is news to me. The 90s Persona is well-known for its reliable mechanics. The entire range was fitted with Mitsubishi engines and gearboxes. Were you the only owner ? Else, it's possible that that the previous owner(s) weren't kind to the old girl. In general, auto 'boxes need a bit more maintenance and care than manuals. In any case, I'm sorry to hear about it, and if it's any consolation, Proton is working hard on a new direct injected Euro 6c engine family with Ricardo and Lotus, they hope to relaunch in Britain in or around 2018. Regards.
