    I wish Gracie all the best. Akiko Suzuki came back from anorexia and made it to the Olympic team for the first time at age of 24, and won a World medal at 27.

      Love Suzuki! Granted she was able to earn a world medal during a very light year in terms of the technical demands of the sport. Nowadays everyone is doing at least one triple-triple (if not two) and the current world gold favorite does multiple triple axels. Plus the young Russians will have quads next year... Still, Suzuki wasn't the most technically gifted skater but she always skated from her heart, had gorgeous programs and music, and was an amazing performer. That allowed her to win a lot of medals and make lots of memories. I miss her so much! I'd wish that for Gracie.

    • @kaorumikeko
      @kaorumikeko 6 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      @@herm712 Well, Akiko was never a gifted jumper as Gracie and she grew up in the 6.0 system. ISU changed the judging system from 6.0 to IJS while she fell ill and lost her jumps completely. In the process of her recovery, she rebuilt her jumping technique from the foundation to adapt to IJS. She was one of the very few lady skaters in her generation who rarely underrotated. She landed a clean 3+3 for the first time in a competition at 26. You never know how a life will turn out.

    I wish Ashley Wagner’s role in getting Gracie help would have been presented. It was not Champ camp staff; Ashely recognized that Gracie was in a bad state and did more for her than ANY of her coaches. I’m glad Gracie is in a much bette replace and will loudly cheer her on as she continues to train and compete!!

      It’s not about Ashley’s roll in helping her. It’s about Gracie’s role in her life. I’m sure she’s grateful for help but in the end she has to decide the outcome....no one else. Good for her for getting help.

    • @glen.simpson
      @glen.simpson 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      ms. wicker, who said anything about a role, or is it a roll? Just acknowledging people in the situation. What she sure didn't have was a friend and fellow competitor isolate, manipulate, and stigmatize her during a difficult period of her life, right! BTW, some outcomes are designed. Rolling on.........

    • @koknesis5226
      @koknesis5226 6 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      No, it IS about the one, who helped and in this case, about Ashley. When we are in the situations Gracie was, usually there is NO ONE who can see, hear or understand. No one. Yes, people see, but they are not able to see; they hear but they are no able hear....It is not so simple as you might think. And it is about Ashley. she is the ONLY ONE what saw, heard and understood. And helped.

    Man, a few years back she was a phenom. I stopped watching figure skating when she was basically at her pinnacle, I had no idea she walked away from it all for a while to battle with something like this. I'm glad she chose to take time from her profession and to deal with this obstacle before it ruined the thing she loves to do most. Eating disorders are nothing to mess around with, it can drain you mentally and steal the joy in the things that you cherish.

    My first conscious decision to restrict my food also came after an offhanded comment a coach (gymnastics for me) made about my butt. I was nine. And already underweight. But it stayed in my mind and I struggled with anorexia for 15 years, in and out of treatment and hospitalizations. I'm so proud of Gracie for doing what she needs to get better. I hope to see her back to doing what she loves, and truly enjoying it!

    Thank you Gracie for sharing! Wishing the best of luck to you and a comeback that you're happy with. I sincerely hope this helps others and brings awareness and change. I grew up watching figure skating and love it, but lately I find it hard to support a sport that has coaches that demand young girls and women keep their weight down too low, and comment on their bodies. I'm sure eating disorders are rampant and not talked about... yet. Depression as well, no doubt. And with frail, unnaturally thin bodies, skaters are more vulnerable to injuries. :( Someone we can all admire is Akiko Suzuki who came back from anorexia and elegantly fought her way to the top level!

    I’m a figure skater and I’m not even that good but all of the weight issues are so relatable to me. My ballet teacher once complimented my weight after I didn’t eat for a week (I was sick and unable to eat), and when I said that she treated it like it was a positive thing. Another thing she does is tell other people that they should be losing weight... and they’re practically sticks.

    It breaks my heart to see this happen to so many skaters. They feel comfortable in their own body until one person makes a comment and it sky rockets from there. Everyone can be insecure about their bodies but for athletes it can be worse because they think they need to look a certain way to do what they love.
    Everyone should learn to never say anything about someone’s body because as long as you feel confident in it that’s all what matters.

    Shame on that coach for giving her that body-shaming comment. He might be professional skater and yes weight control is a big part of this sport, but nothing grants a grown man any right to body-shame a teenage girl, in a dismissive and thoughtless manner, EVER. Shame on him.

    Beautiful, intelligent woman doesn’t need a wold medal. She could do anything and be healthy
    and lead an exciting and fulfilling life. Skating doesn’t have to be her everything.

    • @Bett1996
      @Bett1996 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I agree, but sometimes we need to set goals, even if they seem impossible or unnecessary, so that we do our best to accomplish it. She just wants her life back, it's normal, and if wanting that medal makes her work harder to be healthier and psychologically stronger, well, I say, go for it :)

    Gracie has had the wrong coach. I am a prior coach, and I can easily see that. Gracie ,please comeback, and get Yuka Soto or Brian Orser. I could also help you with the psychological aspect of the sport for free because I have such faith in you. You are a beautiful skater and a beautiful woman. Don’t let anybody steal your joy. You can do it

    I wish her the best but in Russia it's figure skating jam and definitely Alexandra, Evgenia, Alina is not fighting with other countries athletes but they are competing with each other to be on the no.1 spot.

    Gracie is my favorite American female figure skater. She has grace unlike her peers and she looks like a literal ice princess when she skates. Unfortunately, Gracie has made her return when it is now the era of jumps, but that should not stop her from competing and from being America's favorite ice queen :) Most true skaters love Gracie Gold more than most other American female skaters because she is humble and she just looks so good on the ice. I hope her skating career lasts for as long as she physically can.

      If those Russian girls have better career trajectories than Zagitova, maybe. Remember just last year when people thought Alina was unbeatable? Eteri is a terrible coach who does not think of the health of her students. It makes me sick to say it, but I wouldn't count on quad jumpers like Alexandra Trusova or Anna Scherbakova having very long careers.

    And... by the way, never criticize anyone???? We ALL DO! in any way we all do criticize people for what they do, whether is for an ability or a mistake or an achievement or looks. We all do it! What we all must learn or re-learn is to understand people's comments and take them as they are, just comments! If one gets offended for what one listens, then one never listen to people at all. We must learn to digest people's opinions and accept what can be true facts and discard empty words. Why would I feel offended just for a criticism? People must feel offended for an insult, nothing else.

    People need to understand that eating disorders happen when the individuals in this case Gracie Gold refuse to cooperate with the bodies natural rhythms. A woman is supposed to bloom into all her natural glory, but the exigencies of sport mean cutting short that natural progression which of course entails all manner of eating disorders. It is the exigencies of the sport of Ice skating that are the root cause. It is the unusual athlete that is able to survive the support past their 20's.

    Having an eating disorder is a hard thing to live with, it’s a love/hate relationship. I wanted to die when I was during the worst of it, hospitalizations a couple times. I got my weight back up to normal, but for years I still dealt with the binging/purging/bulimia, finally stopped purging after 15 years. I admit I still want to do it once and a while because some of us never really completely recover from this. It’s annoying.
